Studies have suggested that higher levels of family conflict increase the levels of suicidal ideation experienced by individuals. Objective: To address and understand this issue better, the following research aimed to identify a relationship between family conflict and suicidal ideation, as well as to discover which subscale, if not both, of family conflict (physical and emotional neglect) would be a significant predictor of suicidal ideation. Method: A non-clinical sample of 133 Leiden University students aged 17 to 26 were recruited. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS) were used to test the hypotheses. Results: Results revealed a significant relationship between family conflict and suicidal ideation (r (133) = .230, p= .008). Results further revealed that emotional neglect was a significant predictor of suicidal ideation (F (2,130) = 2.065, p= .041), whereas physical neglect was not (F (2,130) =.007, p= .994). Conclusions: Professionals, and importantly universities, should be more conscientious and aware of the impact that both past and current family problems/conflict can have on adolescents’ and young adults’ experiences with suicidal ideation.Show less

Crick Lund, this study investigated the relationship between religion and Suicidal Ideation (SI). Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and therefore its subdomains, amongst which SI, require specific attention. Religion is a major social determinant as 84.4% of the world’s population is religiously affiliated. Objective: Investigating the relationship between religion and suicidal ideation in light of the SDoMH framework. Methods: A non-clinical sample of 133 Leiden University students aged 17 to 26 were recruited. SI was measured by means of the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS) and religion was measured with two demographical questions regarding self-perceived religiosity and religious service attendance. Results: No significant relationship between SI and self-perceived religiosity (t(131) = -.334, p = .739), and between SI and religious service attendance (t(131) = 1.474, p = .143) was found. Furthermore, a SI prevalence of 51.8% was found. Conclusion: This study reveals the need for a detailed and structured approach to investigating the concepts of religion and suicidal ideation within future research into the SDoMH, as well as the possibility that the prevalence of SI has increased.Show less

Although influential, South Korea’s competitive society, lack of attention to mental health and cultural stigma cannot fully account for why this rate is so high. Therefore, a different aspect must be looked at, namely, The Werther Effect. Through the analysis of the case study of Choi Jin-Ri (Sulli), this research demonstrates how the K-Pop industry may be causing celebrities to take their own lives, thus through mechanism of the Werther Effect, aiding the increase of South Korea’s national suicide rate.Show less

In 2018, South Korea's armed forces included around 608,000 active military personnel, including 107,000 conscript soldiers. In order to sustain an army this big, human welfare issues require significant care. However, with the current suicide rate in the military and the rising abuse reports, South Korea is facing internal threats. These internal issues could be of possible negative impact for the national defense of South Korea. This thesis looked at how the military environment and the military’s response on abuse and maladjustment issues allows for factors to occur which influence South Korean conscript soldiers to ideate and commit suicide. This was done by using Joiner's interpersonal psychology theory to analyze two recent suicide cases which have been reported by the media. It was found that the military environment in these cases allowed for all factors of the theory to develop. This in turn was linked to the suicide of the case subjects. The thesis also showed that the military's response and actions after the death of the soldiers were not in the favor of reflection and future prevention of such cases. This thesis has contributed to the understanding of conscript suicide in the South Korean military by analyzing the role of the internal military environment.Show less

I argue, using mainly newspaper reports as a representation of popular currents of thought among the growing literate classes, that the prominent suicides of foreign secretary Lord Castlereagh and other politicians in the Regency Period constituted a suicide ‘cluster’ which provoked imitators and a heightened anxiety over the issue. Further, that this suicide crisis, responding to charges of élite hypocrisy and building on shifts in language initiated by the Romantic Movement, and in opposition to perceived secularist and evangelical threats, helped to generate a new code of social mores. This code was a retrenchment of traditional Christian morals for a new bourgeois and scientific age; it was, in short, the birth of Victorian middle-class morality.Show less

Therefore, it is necessary to return to Frey’s interpretation of suicide. With the explanation of Frey’s other-inflicted suicide it is possible to make sense of Socrates’ death. Socrates has placed himself knowingly and willingly in a position where he had to die. Because he manipulated the state, he was forced to drink the hemlock. This approach of hurting himself cannot be seen as a rejection of the gods, yet he can achieve his desired premature death. It is possible to solve the discrepancy in Phaedo about Socrates’ death with the clarification that Socrates has committed other-inflicted suicide.Show less
