Several factors have been identified that are associated with a low QoL and high health costs in individuals diagnosed with a PD. The influence of trauma is unknown. It has been found that PDs are associated with both past trauma experiences and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their daily life. While several studies suggested that individuals with a Borderline PD (BPD) and comorbid PTSD suffer from a more impaired QoL compared to individuals with a single disorder, less is known about the effect of PTSD on PDs other than BPD and the relation between trauma severity and health costs. The current study investigates the effect of both childhood trauma and current PTSD symptoms on QoL and health costs in individuals diagnosed with a PD and the possible mediating role of QoL on the relationship between trauma and health costs. The sample consisted of 65 individuals, with a mean age of 38 (SD = 12.3), diagnosed with one or more PDs. Data was collected with several questionnaires (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5, Treatment Inventory of Costs in Patients with psychiatric disorders, and the Mental Health Quality of Life questionnaire). The results show that severity of current PTSD symptoms (t(58) = -4.19, p < .001) but not childhood trauma was related to a decreased QoL in individuals diagnosed with a PD. Both current PTSD symptoms and childhood trauma were not significantly related to health costs. QoL did not perform a mediating role on the relationship between trauma and health costs. To conclude, severe PTSD symptoms represent an additional deprivation for QoL among personality-disordered individuals in this sample. This conclusion is based on a relatively small sample, thus should be further investigated with a larger sample.Show less

Vluchtelingen hebben daardoor een hogere prevalentie op het ontwikkelen van PTSS. Cognitieve flexibiliteit zou een modererend effect hebben op het ontwikkelen van traumasymptomen/PTSS. De huidige studie onderzoekt het verband tussen de mate van cognitieve flexibiliteit en de mate van traumasymptomen bij Syrische vluchtelingenkinderen van 10 tot en met 18 jaar, waarbij ook naar verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes wordt gekeken. Voor het meten van cognitieve flexibiliteit voerden de participanten een Cue Context Reversal Task uit en voor het meten van traumasymptomen vulden de participanten de CPSS-vragenlijst in. De Pearsons correlatie tussen cognitieve flexibiliteit en traumasymptomen was niet significant. Deze correlatie bleek ook niet significant wanneer apart naar jongens en meisjes werd gekeken. Het verschil in correlaties tussen jongens en meisjes was ook niet significant. Cognitieve flexibiliteit staat in de huidige studie dus niet in verband met de ontwikkeling van traumasymptomen bij Syrische vluchtelingenkinderen, waarin ook geen verschil is tussen jongens en meisjes. Toekomstig onderzoek is nodig om de kennis over cognitieve flexibiliteit en traumasymptomen bij kinderen te vergroten, waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met de limitaties en suggesties uit de huidige studie. Deze kennis kan bijdragen aan een betere begeleiding van Syrische vluchtelingenkinderen na het meemaken van een trauma.Show less

Considering that literature, and Young Adult literature specifically, can be seen as a...Show moreYoung adults are continually confronted with instability and crises, as well as traumatic events at large. Considering that literature, and Young Adult literature specifically, can be seen as a reflection of the lived experience, it is expected that the existence of such trauma influences the novels written. The ability of Young Adult literature to reflect the lived experience, and the necessity for it to do so, is also discussed by columnist and author Michael Cart in 2016, literature researcher Bruce Carrick in 2017 and literature studies researcher Amy Elliot in 2015. However, they do not specifically note on the place of trauma in this reflection. This thesis considers how trauma affects the narrator’s voice. To do so, Canadian author Sebastien de Castell’s fantasy Young Adult novels Way of the Argosi and Spellslinger were taken as a case study. Ferius and Kellen, the respective protagonists of the aforementioned novels, are confronted with traumatic experiences, such as torture and genocide. Due to perceived commonalities in the situations of the protagonists, and their communities, to that of Indigenous communities, knowledge of the latter is used to make sense of the former. Similarly, knowledge of the Holocaust was used to contemplate the fictional narrative. Knowledge on trauma in these real world communities was gained from articles by, among others, psychologists Sarah Panofsky et al. (2021) and social worker Elizabeth Fast and psychologist Delphine Collin-Vézina (2010). Due to the influence trauma can have on the lived experience, there was a need for discussing the reliability of the narrator of each novel. As a result, this thesis looked to the articles on unreliable and fallible narrators by religious studies professor Catherine Caufield, published in 2021, and cultural studies researcher Greta Olson, published in 2003. A close reading of the novels found trauma to affect not only the narratorial style, such as through narrative fragmentation, but also the narrator’s reliability and tone of voice. Though the narrators of Way of the Argosi and Spellslinger were not affected similarly in narratorial style, with the former’s narration being more fragmented as opposed to the linear narration of the latter, the tone of voice is comparable. In both cases, there is a clear influence of fear and resentment on the narrator’s voice. The reliability of the respective novels narrators is also similarly fallible, though due to different reasons. The insight provided by the novels to the readers allow for a fostering of understanding between different real-life cultures, histories and life-journeys.Show less

The sitcom, following the lives of a group of teenagers living in Derry in the 1990’s, combines the grimness of the sectarian conflict with the recognisability of teenage hardship. In the series, trauma is inherently linked to the everyday concepts of youth, humour, and community. These concepts are used to allow the characters and the audience to think critically on the events occurring in the series, as the conflict is presented with such normalcy. Additionally, they highlight a sense of hope and kinship and advocate for a youth-inclusive approach to peacebuilding. The series can also be seen as a product of its time; not only does it portray the zeitgeist of 1990’s Derry, it is also a response to the ongoing violence and paramilitary activity in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday Agreement. Derry Girls underlines the importance of community in the processing of trauma, established the ‘Derry Girls’ as an exemplification of peacebuilding, and uses humour as a means of the demystification of conflict.Show less

Bij deze verslaggeving wordt er ook in grotere mate gebruik gemaakt van foto’s en video’s die klimaatverandering moet afbeelden. De fotografen en filmmakers die deze beelden maken worden in hun werk blootgesteld aan traumatische gebeurtenissen en hebben contact met slachtoffers hiervan. Echter, er is nog weinig onderzoek gedaan naar de effecten van dit werk op de fotografen en filmmakers die dit werk doen. Deze scriptie richt zich op de visualisering van klimaatverandering en of dit werk als traumatiserend wordt ervaren. Om dit te onderzoeken is de volgende onderzoeksvraag geformuleerd: In hoeverre kan het visualiseren van klimaatverandering traumatische effecten hebben op de fotografen en filmmakers die deze beelden vastleggen en welke copingstrategieën gebruiken zij om hiermee om te gaan? Hiervoor zijn interviews gehouden met fotografen en filmmakers die klimaatverandering visualiseren. Zij zijn gevraagd naar de manier van visualisatie, de impact die dat op hun heeft, het oplopen van trauma en hoe zij hiermee omgaan. Ook zijn er ook foto-elicitatie interviews gehouden om de context van een drietal beelden dieper te onderzoeken. De kwalitatieve data is geanalyseerd aan de hand van concepten die in de literatuurstudie geformuleerd zijn. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de respondenten klimaatverandering visualiseren door het afbeelden van een concrete impact, mensen en dieren. Om dit op beeld vast te leggen gaan respondenten naar gebieden die geteisterd worden door natuurrampen, spreken zij slachtoffers en fotografen en filmen zij deze mensen. In dit werk lopen zij primair trauma op door de situaties waarin zij terechtkomen en de gebeurtenissen die zij ervaren. Ook ervaren zij secundair trauma door de gesprekken die zij hebben met slachtoffers. De respondenten vertonen copingstrategieën in de interviews om het werk een plek te geven. Ook vertonen respondenten ontwijkend gedrag en een distantiëring van emoties. Op basis van de resultaten van dit onderzoek wordt geconcludeerd dat het visualiseren van klimaatverandering traumatiserend kan zijn voor de mensen die dit op beeld vastleggen. Zij lopen in hun werk primair en secundair trauma op vanwege de gebeurtenissen die zij ervaren en de slachtoffers die zij spreken. Dit is een oriënterend onderzoek en biedt daarmee veel ruimte voor vervolgonderzoek, zowel kwalitatief onderzoek dat dieper ingaat op het oplopen van en copen met trauma bij het visualiseren van klimaatverandering als kwantitatief onderzoek onder een bredere groep fotografen en filmmakers die dit in beeld brengen.Show less

Dit werkstuk is een analyse van twee vrouwelijke karakters uit twee romans van Nawal El Saadawi, Firdaws uit Woman at Point Zero en Zakiyya uit God Dies by the Nile, vanuit het perspectief van...Show moreDit werkstuk is een analyse van twee vrouwelijke karakters uit twee romans van Nawal El Saadawi, Firdaws uit Woman at Point Zero en Zakiyya uit God Dies by the Nile, vanuit het perspectief van Studies on Hysteria van Josef Breuer en Sigmund Freud. Volgens Breuer en Freud betekent hysterie dat er conversie plaatsvindt van mentale stress naar fysieke symptomen door trauma, en ze laten dit zien in 5 voorbeelden van vrouwen met hysterie. Deze anamneses heb ik gebruikt in mijn analyse van Firdaws en Zakiyya. Firdaws uit Woman at Point Zero heeft trauma’s door haar besnijdenis toen ze jong was en door het seksueel misbruik in haar jeugd. Daarnaast heeft Firdaws een trauma omdat haar trauma omdat haar vertrouwen gebroken wordt door verschillende personen. Er heeft bij Firdaws conversie opgetreden en ze heeft fysieke symptomen zoals angstaanvallen en hallucinaties. Zakiyya uit God Dies by the Nile heeft trauma’s door haar besnijdenis, mishandeling door haar man en uitbuiting door de burgemeester van haar dorp. Dit trauma uit zich in herbelevingen met heftige hallucinaties, wat komt door een splitsing tussen het bewustzijn en het onderbewuste. Firdaws en Zakiyya zijn dus allebei hysterisch volgens de definitie van Breuer en Freud. Dit laat zien dat Nawal El Saadawi misschien geïnspireerd was door Breuer en Freud toen ze de twee romans schreef.Show less

Op basis van een theoretische uiteenzetting over (postkoloniaal) trauma en representatie, wordt ingegaan op zowel het particuliere seksuele trauma van hoofdpersonage Noenka, als het postkoloniale trauma van de (ex-)kolonie Suriname dat indirect gerepresenteerd wordt in de roman. In de analyse wordt nadruk gelegd op geërfde herinneringen, symboliek en de gehanteerde vertelvorm in Over de gekte van een vrouw. Deze drie aspecten zijn te lezen als signalen om een particulier, seksueel trauma te herkennen, maar dienen tevens om het grotere postkoloniale trauma van Suriname aan de lezer kenbaar te maken.Show less

My application of...Show moreIn this thesis I apply trauma theory to the reading of Jan Carson's magical realist novel, The Fire Starters and Nnedi Okorafor's speculative fiction novel, Who Fears Death. My application of trauma theory focuses in particular on the fantastical bodies of the characters that feature in these two novels. I posit that in spite of their many differences, there is common ground to be found between the two novels through their shared exploration of the neglected traumatic wound as embodied by the fantastical body. I argue that both Carson and Okorafor utilise the fantastical body to disrupt dominant narratives that sublimate the traumatic wound and, furthermore, that it is through these fantastical bodies that the traumatic wound may be properly assimilated and thus allow for hopeful change. The structure of the following thesis is thus centred around the idea that these fantastical bodies may be interpreted as embodying both traumatic wound and, a hopeful change, with each chapter containing a section on body as wound and body as change.Show less

In deze thesis worden...Show moreIn opeenvolgende jaren worden twee romans met het thema trauma bekroond met de ANV-Debutantenprijs; De afwezigen (2016) van Lieke Kézér en Houtrot (2017) van Rinkse Hillen. In deze thesis worden beide romans door middel van een ideologiekritische, kwalitatieve analyse geplaatst binnen de in de literatuurtheorie veronderstelde verschuiving van een ontologische dominant naar een affectieve dominant. Het begrip dominant wordt gebruikt in navolging van Hans Demeyer en Sven Vitse, die dit ontlenen uit het Russisch formalisme. Voor de duiding van het begrip trauma dient de traumatheorie van geschiedfilosoof Frank Ankersmit. Het begrip dient in deze thesis ter verduidelijking van verschuivingen in de literatuur, en vormt een leidraad door de periode van het modernisme en de epistemologische dominant, het postmodernisme dat wordt gekoppeld aan de ontologische dominant en de genoemde verschuiving naar de affectieve dominant, ook wel aangeduid als radicaal relationisme.Show less
The present thesis addresses the local memory of the 2nd of May events in Odesa, Ukraine, a culmination of fights between supporters and opponents of the Maidan government that obtained power in...Show moreThe present thesis addresses the local memory of the 2nd of May events in Odesa, Ukraine, a culmination of fights between supporters and opponents of the Maidan government that obtained power in February 2014. The respective street clashes in Odesa killed six individuals, while 42 lost their lives in a fire in the Trade Union Building. At the surface, these clashes were a contraposition between groupings favoring a Ukrainian nationalistic vector and their opponents desiring pro-Russian policies. However, the local element of these clashes seems to transcend this binary approach. Situated in memory theory, the present thesis addresses the way the memory of these events among Odesans fits into the spectrum spanned by a pro-Ukrainian and a pro-Russian frame of interpreting history. Through a month of field work, during which 41 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Odesans, the thesis answers the central research question: “How do individual and collective memory regarding the 2nd of May events in Odesa interact?”. The thesis identifies four narratives regarding the 2nd of May events: a pro-Ukrainian, an ‘old-Odesan’, an apolitical, and a pro-Russian narrative. Analysis of these narratives provides the following conclusions. Firstly, the use of history as an argument to explain for the present varied widely. Some built their perception of the present events on analogies to events dating to World War II, while others situate their memory more in relation to contemporary events. Secondly, the absence of an authoritative source of information regarding the 2nd of May events is identified, leading to a construction of the interviewees’ memory on personal accounts and hearsays from others. This has resulted in wildly divergent accounts and theories of what happened on the respective day. Thirdly, the specific character of the 2nd of May events, which consisted of two largely disjunct sets of events, is argued to facilitate the inclusion of narratives regarding these events into coherent storylines for both conflicting sides. Fourthly, the different layers of identification that are expressed through the different narratives are analyzed. It is argued that shared belief systems account for shared memories in a more overarching way than membership of specific social groups does. The negotiation of the city of Odesa throughout the different narratives is analyzed in a closing argument.Show less

In chapter 1 I will start out by tracing the concept of trauma back to its origins. I will pay particular attention to the narratives emanating from the medical discourse surrounding hysteria and trauma, highlighting the paradoxical and problematic conceptualization of the female subject in psychoanalysis. Furthermore, I will show, taking Alias Grace as a case study, how psychoanalysis and the dominant model of trauma theory can be a fruitful epistemological tool when applied to trauma narratives, but also what its limitations are in the face of the female trauma. Chapter 2, then, will further examine the underlying cause of these limitations and the origin of the harmful narratives perpetuated within the trauma theory discourse by exploring the relationship between the phallogocentric nature of Western society and women’s place within it. It will demonstrate why the female experience of trauma warrants additional reflection and that, in some ways, it lies beyond the reaches of the dominant model. And finally, Chapter 3 will propose three alternative approaches that aim at providing a more inclusive account of the female trauma. All three approaches will be characterized by an emphasis on the embodied experience of trauma and treat the female body as a potential site of expression.Show less

Alfred Birney heeft als tweede-generatiemigrant op basis van de memoires van zijn vader een roman geschreven over de dekolonisatie van Indonesië. Het autobiografische werk is veelvuldig als authentiek en geloofwaardig bestempeld en wordt gezien als vernieuwend binnen het Nederlands-Indische corpus. In deze scriptie onderzoek ik welke elementen van het werk aanzetten tot deze receptie en met welk effect literatuur ingezet kan worden om culturele herinnering te produceren.Show less
