Tafelspelen are simple occasional plays written by rhetoricians, in which most commonly two (with some exceptions, in which there are more) characters engage in conversation discussing one or more ideas, encouraging a discussion between said characters or character and audience. Through analysing seven pieces from this collection, didactic characteristics become apparent in two ways: by implementing the method of question/answer and by the context of the conversation, being either conflicting or cooperative. For both ways, the dialogue as a form is an important didactic tool – by having two characters engage in conversation to discuss a certain topic or idea, the didactic-moralistic message of the tafelspel is brought to the forefront. This research aims to demonstrate there are lessons to be learned from this genre in rhetorician literature. The didactic principles of the rhetoricians are made evident in the content of the tafelspelen in question through the dialogue as a form, with questions and response structure as a method.Show less
