Show less

In addition, it was examined what the influence of age and gender was. The importance of this research is to improve the current interventions for children with ADHD. To make this possible, we need to investigate how the behavior problems have arisen. In this study we define externalizing problem behavior as antisocial or aggressive behavior. On the basis of the experimental questionnaire Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EIQ) there were measured three emotional skills: recognizing emotions, regulating emotions and handling of emotions. In this study only the scores that were related to emotion regulation were analyzed. In addition, the Social Emotional questionnaire (SEV) is used to extent to which externalizing problem behavior occurs. The respondents were parents of Dutch children aged 4 to 18 years from the general population. The respondents were asked to fill in the questionnaires online. The sample contained 255 respondents, including 112 girls and 143 boys. The results showed that children with ADHD determine less good emotion regulation skills than children without ADHD. It was also found that children with ADHD exhibit significantly more antisocial and aggressive behavior than children without the disorder. According to both aggressive behavior and antisocial behavior it turns out that emotion regulation plays an important role. It turned out that age affects antisocial behavior, but it does not affect aggressive behavior. It turned out that gender affects only aggressive behavior. There was found an interaction effect on the factors disorder and age in antisocial behavior. Also there were interaction effects found on the factors disorder and emotion regulation, emotion regulation and age and gender and disorder in aggressive behavior. The results of this research suggest that children with ADHD who exhibit externalizing problem behavior, benefit from an intervention aimed at training of the emotion regulation skills. Possibly this will lead to a decrease in the problem behavior and prevention of further increase of this behavior.Show less
