Movements such as postcolonialism and postcustodialism, combined with the digital turn, have allowed interest in other, less conventional forms of archiving to emerge. As such, the concept of an archival continuum (that is, the understanding of archives as evolving and participatory systems rather than fixed institutions) has been accepted by archival scholarship. This thesis investigates whether printed family memoirs that incorporate visual material from family archives can be placed along said archival continuum. Four such memoirs – The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010), In Memory of Memory (2018), Heimat: A German Family Album (2018), and Letters to Camondo (2021) – have been selected as case studies by which to examine their potential archival and evidentiary value. Each memoir is a work of postmemory – following Marianne Hirsch, the authors are processing generational trauma passed down as a result of the Holocaust. I argue that it is not only the narratives that lend them archival value, but also their inclusion of archival material. As I will show, understanding published memoirs as archives supports an expanded recognition of non-professional memory work as archival. Importantly, the increased accessibility of published memoirs to a general audience versus that of conventional archives allows for greater interaction with the preserved objects, and so aids in supporting the societal memorialization of the Holocaust. By focusing on the paper editions of the books, I am able to examine the unique benefits and challenges of the printed book as a form of accessible archive and memory object.Show less

Why do this? On one hand, we do this to establish a new approach, which will allow archivists to find answers about musicians’ documentation habits and thoroughly understand why musicians create their personal records, what does personal and music archives mean to them, and how do they create, use, organize and share them. On the other hand, musicians will have the chance to see the whole picture of what a personal music archive is, how to organize, utilize, and protect it from deterioration and data loss. How will we do this? By conducting interviews and creating meaningful questionnaires archivists will build relationships of trust and confidentiality with musicians, which will bring those two communities closer and benefit both.Show less

The prevalence of social media has done much to aid the spread of conspiracy theories and false or hateful information online. Historian Sophia Rosenfeld has argued that social media platforms have created a ‘wild west climate’ in which fact and fiction are muddled and popularity rather than reliability dictates the type of information that is presented to users. The primary focus of this thesis is on the role archivists can play in preserving problematic and false information that has been created and spread on social media. This paper will focus on one particular case study of false and controversial information shared on social media: the so-called ‘Irish slaves myth’ or ‘Irish slaves meme’. One of the central questions of this paper is whether this content merits a place in an archive based on its importance as a historical record. Proceeding from this question, the paper will then consider the issues that an archival institution must address if it were to create such an archive. There are many special issues that an archival institution would have to consider when creating this archive, such as appraisal (determining the archival value of the material), preservation, arrangement, description, and ethics. This paper will study these issues as they apply to the creation of a hypothetical archive of the Irish slaves meme and it will attempt to offer some solutions.Show less

The Manual is also the codified version of Dutch Archivistiek, and to some extent it reflects European archival practices, especially France and Germany. Although the Manual has never been translated into Indonesian, its influence on Indonesian archival practices is accepted, understood and developed by Indonesian archivists within their own discourse and context. The thesis describes the influence on the laws (Archief wet 1918, Archief ordonnantie 1941, Pokok-Pokok Kearsipan 1971 and Kearsipan 2009), the standards (Pengelolaan Arsip Statis 2004, Pedoman Penyusunan Sarana Bantu Penemuan Kembali Arsip Statis 2011 and Standar Deskripsi Arsip Statis 2015) and writings through the main rules of the Manual such as concept of archives, provenance, original order, arrangement and description.Show less

Prior to this, many agencies were printing and filing emails. The National Archives and Records Administration created an approach to email management called Capstone which classifies employees emails based on their position in the agency. By using Capstone, agencies will be in compliance with the new regulations. However, agencies can choose to use use a different approach. This thesis explores the different approaches that the agencies have implemented and looks at the role the National Archives has played.Show less

Show less
