Show less

Therefore, it is important to get a more thorough understanding of the determinants of such caregiving behaviours. Researchers have consistently found an association between high levels of environmental chaos in the household and negative parenting behaviours. However, this relation has never been investigated in an experimental setting before so no causal inferences could be made. Therefore, the present study used an experimental within-subjects design to investigate whether (observed) harsh caregiving behaviour is predicted by an (experimentally manipulated) chaotic home environment. In addition, self-regulatory skills, measured with a delay discounting task and a Go/Nogo task, were examined as a potential moderator in this relation. A total of 96 women aged between 18 and 25 years participated in the two lab-visits. The laboratory (furnished like a living room) was calm and organized in the neutral condition, and chaotic and unorganized in the chaos condition. Contrary to what was hypothesized, results of the multilevel analysis showed no causal relation between chaos and harsh caregiving in the present study. Also, no moderating effect of self-regulatory skills on the relation between environmental chaos and harsh caregiving behaviours was found. Possible explanations for not finding the expected results and directions for future research are addressed in the discussion.Show less

The advent of these unmanned flying machines has transformed the field of aerial photography as it has prompted the proliferation of vertical views. This type of view is known as God’s eye view. The technical specificities that differentiate drones from other flying devices enhance certain representational operations in the photographic language; operations that yield a very particular visual representation of the earth’s surface. The representation issues that have been identified in drone vernacular photography are three: paradox between chaos and geometry, miniaturization and flatness. These elements affect the way in which viewers perceive and ascribe meaning to our living space. When these characteristics are not critically thought, these photographic images can give rise to feelings of possession, affective detachment and omnipresence. Thus, they dehumanize our view of the world. A critical and historical reflection upon this issues in drone photography can decrease the visual reification of our living space, and instead, they can become qualities of a living and dynamic spatial representation.Show less

We examined whether this relationship is moderated by temperament of the child and neighborhood perception of the parents. A sample of 48 children (aged 1.3–4 years) and one of their parents, as well as the child’s caregiver in the childcare center participated in this study. Results did not show an association between chaos and problem behavior, and neither temperament nor parent’s neighborhood perception played a moderating role in this association. However, child age, child’s temperament and neighborhood perception of the parents proved to predict problem behavior in a non-linear way. The results of this study are limited by the sample, which is small and on average highly educated. A possible relation between chaos and problem behavior should be explored in an extended sample that represents low educated families as well.Show less
