British geopolitical interests in backing the Saudi military operations in Yemen focus on expanding their own regional influence in the Middle East. British relations with Iran influences the British strategy towards the Yemen War, as this was is perceived to be a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, in which the UK engages in substitution warfare to counteract the enlargement of the Iranian sphere of influence. Further security interest of the UK to continue their support for Saudi Arabia in Yemen is to counteract the terrorist presence of the AQAP in Yemen, which fits into a wider trend of British counterterrorism policy. Furthermore, British arms sales to the Saudi army play a role in British security as well as economic interests in the Yemen War. The contested British arms sales to Saudi are continued both to strengthen the Saudi military power and to benefit from the lucrative military arms market. Lastly, this research discusses the influence of the oil market on the British determination to continue their support for Saudi Arabia in the Yemen War, relating to energy security facilitated by Saudi oil.Show less
In an attempt to find variables of a counterterrorism policy that increased the perceived security of citizens and their support for the policy, an online survey experiment (N = 148) was conducted...Show moreIn an attempt to find variables of a counterterrorism policy that increased the perceived security of citizens and their support for the policy, an online survey experiment (N = 148) was conducted on a Dutch convenience sample in which the threat level of a terrorist attack and the type of counterterrorism policy were manipulated. This research confirmed that an increase in the threat of a terrorist attack leads to a decrease in the perceived security of citizens, but it could not find evidence for the influence of the political philosophy underpinning the counterterrorism policy or the interaction effect between the threat level and the political orientation of the policy.Show less

It looks at the impacts of this law on Chinese ethnic minorities, with the focus on Tibetans and Uyghurs. The thesis compares Chinese counter-terrorism strategies with those of the United States and the United Kingdom, to conclude that the global war on terror has had negative impacts on the protection of human rights. More and more states are choosing national security over the protection of human rights, leading to more human rights violations globally. China is no exception to this, and Tibetans and Uyghurs suffer many consequences because of the new Chinese Counter-Terrorism Law. These consequences are explained in this thesis.Show less
