This thesis focusses on deictic spatio-temporal expressions in Mandarin Chinese and Korean, with special attention given to expressions containing ‘up’, ‘down’, ‘front’ and ‘back’. It endeavours to see if Mandarin Chinese has influenced Korean in the domain of spatio-temporal expressions. On the grounds of linguistic theories on (spatio-temporal) deixis and conceptual metaphors and by taking into account historical linguistic and cultural contact between the regions nowadays called the People’s Republic of China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea, this thesis compares modern (spatio-)temporal expressions in both Mandarin Chinese and Korean to conclude that there has been influence.Show less

Show less

They shift the referent with every change of speaker in a conversation. In the process of language acquisition, children have to discover how to comprehend and produce personal deixis correctly, which demands knowledge of speech roles. To study this process, researchers have focused mainly on pronoun analysis. In this thesis, we suggest that turn taking can also be used for this purpose, since this interactional system constitutes the context where language is learned. We analysed turn taking competence, role reversing competence and correct personal deixis production in typically developing and autistic children. Our results showed different performance between groups, and suggest that turn taking competence is positively correlated with correct deixis production. To sum up, this is the first study to point out the importance of children's competence in turn taking to measure and study personal deixis acquistion.Show less

The terms ia and ne are visibility-neutral. The nominal demonstratives can be used pronominally in copular clauses to identify referents in the speech situation. In adnominal form, they can co-occur with other determiners in a noun phrase. The corresponding local adverbs are ia, naa and nee respectively. Both ia and naan can be used for endophoric reference. Addressee-based naan is used anaphorically to refer back to preceding noun phrases and preceding chunks of discourse. The cataphoric demonstrative is ia, used to introduce direct speech. Speaker-based ia can only be used for anaphoric reference when the referent has high topicality.Show less
