In their recent article, Ott and Struckmeier ...Show moreThis thesis examines two approaches to ellipsis in order to gain further insight into the behaviour of clausal ellipsis when targeting constituents. In their recent article, Ott and Struckmeier (2018) advocate the usefulness of German modal particles (MPs) as a test to show selective targeting in swiping, in contrast to the generally accepted unselective move-and-delete approach of ellipsis argued by Merchant (2001). This thesis adopts Ott and Struckmeier’s argument in order to determine whether the interaction between R-pronouns and MPs in clausal ellipsis in Dutch, also known as sweeping, results in evidence supporting selective targeting of constituents in the clause. This investigation was done via an acceptability judgment task, completed by 162 native speakers of Dutch and Flemish. Comparing acceptability scores of differing syntactic configurations shows that ellipsis does seem to target selectively, as MPs are demonstrated to be resistant to movement and are allowed as remnants in the ellipsis site. Further research into Dutch sweeping constructions thus seems to be advisable.Show less

As a result, how a sender meant to send out a message versus how their addressee...Show moreComputer-Mediated-Communication is bereft of any intonation markers usually found in face-to-face conversations. As a result, how a sender meant to send out a message versus how their addressee reads it sometimes differ. This can lead to uncooperative and confusing online communication. This paper set out to examine if (and what) effects different punctuation types have on the interpretation of meaning in WhatsApp communication, and whether one’s age or native language influences the perception of these markers. The punctuation types were the exclamation mark, ellipsis, periods, and no punctuation. Unlike previous studies conducted on this topic which focussed only on students, this study was conducted among 123 respondents from a wide variety of ages and countries. Through an online survey, participants were asked for their opinions and thoughts to different types of punctuation used in recurring but otherwise identical messages. Results indicated that different punctuation types elicit strong and differing views, based on what punctuation type is used, and that these types influence their feelings towards the message as well as to the personal state of their interlocutor. The most significant findings were found for ellipsis points and messages lacking any punctuation: ellipses can lead to very negative interpretations in respondents, and a lack of punctuation can lead to respondents feeling sidelined. Interpretations of certain punctuation types are influenced by a reader’s age and native language. Using Yus’ theory of a phatic internet and cyber literacy, this paper posits that the reason respondents assign these meanings to different types of punctuation is to avoid misunderstandings, form identities, and stay on good terms with people in a world in which most daily conversation happens online.Show less

I will provide a novel account, utilising the syntax-prosody...Show moreThe aim of this thesis is to provide a novel account for the linguistic phenomenon that is commonly referred to as ‘fragments’. I will provide a novel account, utilising the syntax-prosody interface, to account for the fact that fragments appear to be derived from a larger structure. I aim to deal with some of the inadequacies of previous syntactic analyses, and to provide an account that may be better reflected in the data. The analysis that I will detail in this thesis will treat the deletion we find in fragments as prosodic deletion: such an approach has not been attempted so far. Importantly, whilst the main focus of this thesis is investigating the deletion in fragments, we will see that we may also be able to account for further cases of ellipsis, such as sluicing, right node raising and gapping.Show less
