This research...Show moreThe hukou Household registration system in China is contested in many ways, but has especially negative effects on rural-to-urban migrant labour without an urban local hukou status. This research aims to analyse the situation of this group in urban China and look into the effects of the hukou Household registration system on income inequality. This is done by using the theories of institutional discrimination and Durlauf's theory on persistent income inequality. In particular, this thesis researches inequality in job and educational systems and the effects institutional discrimination, exacerbated by the hukou registration system, has on rural-to-urban migrant labour. As a result, this thesis' findings point at the major role which institutional discrimination plays in causing income inequality for rural-to-urban migrant labour in Chinese urban areas, compared to urban citizens with a local hukou status.Show less
