A growing body of literature proposes potential anxiety alleviating effects of humor but thus far has been inconclusive and methodologically lacking. With the world’s population getting older and a concerning number of older adults having anxiety-related complaints, we set out to rigorously test this hypothesis using a prospective longitudinal design. We investigated whether humor influences anxiety following adverse life events in older adults. We analyzed data of 1589 participants collected over three measurement points three years apart using a Multilevel Linear Mixed model. Scores on anxiety, humor and negative life events questionnaires were compared. Contrary to the proposed hypothesis, we did not demonstrate humor affect anxiety following adverse life events. Stress-buffering effect of humor is hence yet to be conclusively proven. Study limitations and future directions were discussed.Show less

Show less

Through the analysis of the character Waldirene, protagonist of the comic strips "Waldirene A AM", published in the newspaper "O Estado" from Santa Catarina during the years of 1986 to 1989, this research seeks to answer which stereotypes are triggered by cartoonist Sérgio Bonson in the construction of the maid Wadirene and consequently what stereotypes have to say about the society that consumed them. In this sense, the humor triggered by the comic strips seeks to reveal something about the reading public and indicate the perspective of the newspaper as an instrument of the ruling class.Show less

Show less

However very few critics have shown interest in this fundamental aspect of these texts, concentrating either on their serious or erotic content. This thesis aims to buck this trend and show the importance and value of humor in XVIIIth century libertine literature and how to better represent it in literary criticism. To this aim, the libertine texts are read against the backdrop of the main critical currents between the XVIIIth and the XXIst century, attempting to show which aspect of humor have been favored or ignored. A postmodern “ironic reading” of libertine literature is proposed as a way to offer a newer perspective on these works and show nuanced and more complex degrees of humor in the XVIIIth century texts. As a result, it is made clear that though seriousness has been a guiding principle for literary criticism so far, humor deserves a place in the study of libertine literature, especially today as postmodern tools allow a refinement in the understanding of the humor in these texts.Show less

It will specifically research his use of language in scenes called “talking heads”, wherein the character speaks directly to the camera in a monologue/interview-type setting. The thesis statement is that although humor is incredibly subjective, an analysis using Richard Alexander’s model of classifying jokes will suggest that Michael Scott’s comedic success as a character is explained not by the number and nature of his intended jokes, but by the number and nature of his unintended humor. Alexander suggests six criteria for ascertaining humor. When humor is in fact ascertained it can be categorized as one of sixteen types of humor. This technique was applied to three categories of utterances: intended jokes, unintended humor, and non-jokes. The number of non-jokes was largest with 85 utterances, making it nearly four times as large as the intended jokes category. In the latter, ‘joke’ was the most prevalent type of joke with 36%. Unintended humor counted 44 utterances, of which 30% was ‘satire’. Non-jokes were also chiefly satiric, coming in at 39%. We theoretically know Michael is funny because he is the main character in a comedic television series, however this evidence shows that intended humor and/or jokes attribute the least to his comicality. Unintended and unconscious humor was predominantly present and mainly satiric in nature. It could be assumed that the thesis statement is correct.Show less

Show less

Show less
