By doing this, this research helps in understanding the psychological relevance of organizational employee friendliness. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from 162 employees across various industries. Analysis included reliability analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis to explore associations, and regression analysis to test for direct effects and mediation regression analysis to test for indirect effects. Results: The findings reveal that perceived organizational friendliness significantly predicts employee performance and well-being and reduces work-stress. Significant predictors of organizational friendliness included employee friendly leadership and employee friendly work climate, not significant predictors were employee friendly job content and employee friendly policies. The study also identified significant indirect effects of employee friendly leadership and employee friendly work climate on performance, well-being and stress mediated by perceived organizational friendliness. Key conclusions: Organizational employee friendliness plays an important role in enhancing employee performance and well-being and reducing stress. These results suggest that organizations, for instilling perceptions of organizational employee friendliness in employees, should focus on enhancing employee friendly leadership qualities and improving employee friendly work climate.Show less

This becomes problematic if bureaucrats hold differing preferences from their superiors. The study examines how leaders in public institutions behave in face of insubordination under modern governing conditions where decentralization, outsourcing and market-based reasoning are major factors. It establishes how executives manage bureaucratic insubordination in a specific case of Polish sub-national institutions, contributing to an academically underrepresented institutional setting. Supported by the typology of Yukl (2012) it outlines practical and realistic models of executive behavior.Show less

Show less

This study aims to explore the leadership preferences among public servants during times of crisis, and to make concrete recommendations for further research into the underdeveloped knowledge on public leadership preferences in times of crisis. To do so, semistructured interviews were conducted with employees from the municipalities of The Hague and Gouda, during which they were asked to report their needs in terms of three leadership styles: laissez-faire, transactional and transformational. The study found that transformational leadership was preferred during the pandemic and encourages fellow researchers to verify this using quantitative means. Further recommendations include the reexamination of the usefulness of laissez-faire leadership and the usage of different leadership frameworks to touch upon other behaviors.Show less

However, this is not an easy feat. This research focuses on the reasons for the low percentage of women in senior diplomacy compared to the number of women in the field altogether. This was researched by conducting a case study in the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where 12 employees were interviewed. A literature review combined with in-depth interviewing showed three main obstacles that prevent equal representation in senior diplomacy. Diplomacy is still associated with men, who are associated with having hard skills. Women are associated with soft skills and thus less likely to be seen as suitable candidates for leadership. Moreover, women carry out gender specific actions that add pressure on top of their work, which can increase the likelihood of women leaving the field. Gender specific actions are related to dealing with misidentification, undervaluation, and the lack of access to old-boys’ networks. Networking is essential in promotion rounds and as women are often kept out of these circles, levelling up becomes a challenge. In addition, the career of a women can differ from that of a man, around which diplomacy is structured, due to part time work related to family responsibilities or due to maternity leave. This takes a gap out of a woman’s career path and can make it difficult for women to catch up to men and reach the senior levels. Based on the findings, research must be done to combat these challenges to create equal opportunities for women in diplomacy to reach the diplomatic top and break the glass ceiling.Show less

The collaborative context is that of population care within Dutch safety regions. Through use of a survey and consequetive interviews, this thesis finds that generally, leaders within collaborative governance structures use all leadership behaviors that are described by Yukl (2012), between which they alternate depending on the context. However, a slight preference towards relations-oriented, problem-solving and task-oriented behaviors is visible. Leaders view themselves as the linking pin (or Harlem's oil) that unite all parties and feel responsible for making sure that all parties involved contribute to the collaboration, aiming to secure a public good together.Show less

It was hypothesized that female identification would lead to perceiving power as a responsibility and that a stronger sense of responsibility increases an individual’s climate consciousness. This was tested with UK participants (N = 251) which are working in management and leadership positions, taking part in a questionnaire; data was followed up by two linear regressions and a mediation analysis. The results showed that, in line with expectations, women perceived their power more as a responsibility than men did. However, unexpectedly, responsibility and climate consciousness were negatively correlated. Therefore, individuals identifying as female were not more climate conscious because of their heightened sense of responsibility in leadership positions. The opposite effect was found for male identification, as through their decreased sense of responsibility the mediation analysis led to an increased climate consciousness. Therefore, the hypotheses in this study were only partly confirmed. The outcomes have practical implications for human resource management and politics, as certain characteristics can be determined for the “right” leadership positions. Given the necessity of climate change, more research is needed to examine which leadership characteristics would serve the best outcomes for the environment.Show less

In our study we investigated whether sex and gender identity influence the construal of power as either opportunity or responsibility in a variety of power contexts, while also examining the possible moderating role of personality traits. Power was manipulated by priming participants in a high or low power condition, by requesting them to describe a situation in which they felt powerful or powerless. There were also questions about the meaning they ascribed to that power, while their gender identity was measured by a recently developed scale. Our results showed that participants in the high power condition were more likely to construe their power as both an opportunity and a responsibility than the participants in the low power condition and that femininity is associated with the construal of power as a responsibility irrespective of the level of power. Females construed their power as a responsibility more than males only when we controlled for neuroticism, openness to experience and their stability of power. Limitations and implications of the study are discussed.Show less

In particular, this research tries to test whether the transformational leadership of professionals have an influence on the motivation of citizens to stay engaged in processes of co-production. Each dimension of this particular style of leadership is analysed and is applied to the motivation of citizens in the context of co-production. This research aims to explain whether there exists a relationship between the transformative leadership style and a continued engaged motivation of citizens during processes of co-production.Show less

The Shining Path aimed to start a revolution that would contribute to the overthrow of the old bureaucratic capitalist system and establish the new social state of Peru. Special attention must be given to the major inspirational and operational role of leader of the Shining Path, Abimael Guzmán. His fascination for the Marxist and Maoist ideology formed the principles of the movement. Because of Guzmán’s charismatic position and strong ideological stance, his leadership is often characterized as either revolutionary or terrorist. But what elements of Guzmán’s leadership account for his characterization as revolutionary and what elements depict him as terrorist? This thesis aims to explore the different elements that depict Guzmán as either revolutionary or terrorist by looking to the concepts of leadership, revolutionary and terrorist movements.Show less

It is up to him to on the one hand motivate the other Trojans to follow his lead and to on the other hand motivate himself to follow the demands his fatum makes of him. Aeneas finds himself in three situations regarding his fatum: situations in which (1) he is openly forced by his fatum to behave a certain way and he has no choice but to submit, (2) gods and ghosts advise him on which path to follow, but he has some room to decide for himself how to react, and (3) he is free to choose his actions with little to no interference from his fatum. In the first kind of situation, Aeneas proves his worth as a leader by trying to take the time to set some form of hierarchy, to put the situation into his own perspective, and to thank the gods before taking action as required by his fatum. The second kind of situation allows Aeneas to really think about the consequences of all possibilities of action and to deliberate with others before acting. The final kind of situation truly shows Aeneas’ pius personality as a leader of the Trojans. Without force from his fatum, he want the others to know he is one of them and the honor of his father and his homeland weights heaviest when facing his own moral dilemmas.Show less

In this thesis I will focus on two specific shortcomings: lack of political participation from citizens and the discrepancy in communication and expectations between politicians and their constituents. It is important for these problems of democracy to be solved because a democracy can only be a viable and legitimate system when the citizenry engages with the political system by, minimally, casting their vote under well-informed conditions. I will start by evaluating the objections against democratic political systems, raised by social contract theorists Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau. I will discuss these theorists in particular because contemporary consumerist society is getting close to a state of nature in which everybody is motivated by self-interest and focused on maintaining their own lifestyle with at times little consideration for their community. In order to explicate the problems of contemporary democratic systems, I will investigate the lack of participation in politics and the discrepancy in communication and expectations from politicians and their constituents, followed by the problem of dirty hands to explain the importance of strong bridges of mutual understanding between the politician and the citizenry. The third chapter will be devoted to the solution of the problems of contemporary democratic systems, as discussed in the previous chapters. I will explain the importance of charisma, public image and strength of character to overcome the difficulties contemporary democracies face. My thesis will show which characteristics are desirable and necessary for the 21st-century politician to play a direct role in raising the number of citizens participating in politics, as well as those citizens’ understanding of political discourse which will ultimately lead to a more vibrant democratic system.Show less
