Daarmee streeft...Show moreDit onderzoek houdt zich bezig met de vraag hoe Oriëntalistische stereotypen over terroristen vorm krijgen in de zelfrepresentatie van terreurorganisatie IS (Islamitische Staat). Daarmee streeft dit onderzoek naar het uitbreiden van kennis over hoe IS gebruik maakt van stereotypen afkomstig uit het Westen. Deze stereotypen geven ‘de ander’ weer en promoten daarbij afstand en verschil. Ten grondslag hieraan liggen theorieën over (post-)Orientalisme (Said, 2003; Dogra, 2012; Irwin, 2009) en stereotypen (Hall, 1997). Dit onderzoek legt de focus op het online propagandamagazine Dabiq, dat wordt uitgegeven door AlHayat Media Center. Het magazine beschikt over veel foto’s en kent een professionele vormgeving. Door middel van een kwalitatieve inhoudsanalyse zijn 431 beelden bekeken. Deze visuele analyse werd uitgevoerd met behulp van een coding frame, gebaseerd op verschillende Oriëntalistische stereotypen uit Westerse populaire media. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat IS visuele Oriëntalistische stereotypen over terroristen met name vormgeeft via de stereotypen barbarisme, gewelddadigheid en donkere bebaarde boos kijkende mannen met tulbanden. Zo waren er gruwelijke beelden van onthoofdingen, slecht behandelde gevangenen en bewapende IS-strijders aan het front te zien. Hierbij wordt nadrukkelijk ingezoomd op gruwel of dreiging om angst te zaaien. Dit beeldgebruik sluit aan op de Westerse perceptie van de islamitische terrorist. Opmerkelijk is dat hiernaast een groot gedeelte van het beeldmateriaal anders wordt vormgegeven dan de bovengenoemde Oriëntalistische manieren. In deze beelden toonde IS foto’s van een goed draaiende gemeenschap, een tevreden terrorist, blije kinderen of Westerse politieke leiders met een bedenkelijke gezichtsuitdrukking. Daarmee draait IS voor een groot deel de rollen in het Oriëntalistisch discours om. De aanhangers van IS proberen ook een positief zelfbeeld neer te zetten en, andersom, een negatief beeld van de Westerling. Hieruit blijkt dat ze in hun beeldgebruik Oriëntalistische stereotypen alleen toepassen als ze daar baat bij hebben. Ze accepteren het beeld dat IS-strijders ‘anders’ zijn, maar ze zijn daarbij niet onderdanig aan het Westen. Deze visuele analyse draagt bij aan kennis over hoe moderne terroristen in een digitaal tijdperk media kunnen gebruiken en inspelen op bepaalde Westerse percepties van de dreigende terrorist. Media zijn van groot belang voor terroristen. Vanwege nieuwe digitale ontwikkelingen beschikken terroristen nu over de mogelijkheid om eigen media-units op te zetten. Ze zijn niet meer afhankelijk van Westerse nieuwsorganisaties. Daarom is het belangrijk om het steeds verder ontwikkelende mediagebruik van terroristen nauwlettend in de gaten te blijven houden. Alleen dan kunnen Westerse journalisten beter begrijpen hoe terroristen zelf media inzetten en journalistieke activiteiten eigen hebben gemaakt.Show less

The Introduction gives an overview of the field and the relevant issues and literature and the concepts of gender roles (particularly the phenomenon of the ‘power woman’) and the High Rise are explained. The Methodology for the research consists of two tests. First, five minutes of speech of twenty women in Dutch media were analysed for frequencies of the End Rise. The two women who displayed the highest and lowest frequencies were then subjected to further research (with transcribed speech samples consisting of ten minutes) to investigate the nature and context of their End Rises and whether these End Rises constitute occurrences of the High Rise. The results for both tests, which show that there is little correlation between the High Rise and assumed insecurity, are presented in the Results chapter. In the Conclusion, the results are discussed in relation to the research questions and the implications of the research and its results are also discussed.Show less

One of the challenges associated with the educational use of ICT is finding out what motivates teachers to use ICT for educational purposes. The main focus of this study is to examine the relationship between external factors and the educational use of ICT among primary school teachers. A distinction was made between three types of external factors: postive cognitive valences, perceived external support and school collegial support. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 227 primary teachers in the Netherlands. Ten teachers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. No relationship is found between gender and positive cognitive valences. The data didn’t support the expectations of a relationship between school collegial support and educational ICT use. The results show that perceived external support influences the educational use of ICT among primary school teachers. In particular, the results show that environments supporting teachers to engage in ICT activities increase the ICT usage of primary school teachers. The outcome of the qualitative analysis shows that teachers referred mostly to the school as a source of external support. Parents were the second-most mentioned source and students seemed to be the least prominent source of external support. Further research is necessary to make a distinction between different types of perceived external support and their influence on educational ICT use.Show less

Het beeld dat het publiek van de Europese Unie heeft, wordt gevormd door de informatie die beschikbaar is. In deze informatievoorziening vervullen de media een belangrijke rol. In een adviesrapport van de Universiteit Leiden, in opdracht van het Genootschap van Hoofdredacteuren, is daarom de Nederlandse berichtgeving kwalitatief onderzocht. Uit interviews met enkele betrokken correspondenten en journalisten kwam naar voren dat er relevante verschillen zouden bestaan in de berichtgeving van correspondenten in Brussel en die van journalisten in Nederland. Vooral een verschil in de ‘toon’ van de verslaggeving (het subjectieve oordeel van een verslaggever over de EU) en een verschil in het gebruik van frames (de invalshoeken die een journalist kiest in de berichtgeving) vielen op. De uitspraken uit het adviesrapport vormen de aanleiding voor de hoofdvraag van deze masterscriptie: in hoeverre bestaan er verschillen in de ‘toon’ en ‘framing’ van de berichtgeving over de Europese Unie tussen correspondenten uit Brussel en journalisten in Nederland? De antwoorden op deze hoofdvraag dienen, naast een wetenschappelijke doel, ook een maatschappelijk doel en vormen een aanvulling op een specifieke discussie. Na de presentatie van het adviesrapport, barstte de discussie tussen de hoofdredacteuren los óf er daadwerkelijk verschillen bestaan in de berichtgeving. Een aantal hoofdredacteuren, zonder correspondent in de Europese hoofdstad, dacht van niet. Aan de hand van een kwantitatieve, deductieve inhoudsanalyse van 154 krantenartikelen, is zowel de ‘toon’ van een artikel bepaald, als de aanwezigheid van ‘hanteerbare’ mediaframes. Dit zijn frames, zoals het conflictframe, die vaak voorkomen in de mediaberichtgeving, omdat ze een belangrijk journalistiek criterium bevatten (‘conflict’) dat een gebeurtenis nieuwswaardig maakt. De verwachting in dit onderzoek was dat correspondenten positiever over de Europese Unie zouden berichten dan journalisten in Nederland. Daarnaast zouden journalisten meer gebruik maken van hanteerbare mediaframes dan correspondenten. Er bleken alleen significante verschillen te bestaan in de toon van de berichtgeving tussen correspondenten en journalisten. Dit verschil lijkt echter voort te komen uit het relatief grote aandeel columnisten in het corpus van de journalisten in Nederland. Geconcludeerd kan worden dat er geen relevante verschillen lijken te zijn in de berichten tussen de verslaggevers. De hoofdredacteuren die deze stelling verdedigden, mogen meer op hun keuze om de ‘Brusselse’ berichten gelijk te stellen aan de ‘Nederlandse’, vertrouwen.Show less

Hopefully this thesis will also shed a bit of light on how qualitative data analysis methods can be applied not only to textual narratives, but also to (news) photographs. On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered two disasters. Off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku, the most powerful earthquake in Japan’s recorded history occurred (9.0 on the Richter scale). As a result, the eastern coasts of Japan were hit by devastating tsunami waves, killing around 15,000 people. Another disaster quickly followed. Because of the quake and tsunami, there were level 7 meltdowns at the nuclear reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex. It would be the largest nuclear incident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. It goes without saying that this was a major news story. But after a while, the discussion in the Western media seemed to shift from actual disaster reporting to assumptions about the Japanese mentality. Blatant stereotypes about Japanese people became more and more apparent in stories about the disaster. Stereotypes not only appeared in the textual narrative, but could also be found within its accompanying images. So it is within the photographs of Japanese people dealing with the tsunami and nuclear disaster that this research attempts to uncover certain stereotypical cues and tropes. These cues and tropes ultimately contribute to the collective manifestations of stereotypes about Japanese people. Current psychological theory conceptualizes stereotypes as cognitive structures or schemas that represent widely shared beliefs about the defining characteristics of social groups. The media most commonly use stereotypical categorizations of individuals or groups based on race or ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability, employment, and age. These stereotypes are automatically activated when audiences encounter cues or symbols in mass media, according to Peffley, Shields and Williams (1996) and Abraham and Appiah (2006). Stereotypes about Eastern people and cultures in particular have been widely researched. Edward Saïd first posited the revolutionary theoretical framework of Orientalism, which is how he coined the particular form that Western stereotypical understandings of Asian cultures has taken. He, and many other experts, claim that this Orientalism has evolved into a cultural myth permeating Western thought. It has been articulated through metaphors which characterize the East in ways which emphasize its strangeness and otherness. The Oriental person is made up of a single image which carries with it the taint of inferiority. Kathleen Tierney and Erica Kuligowski postulate that the media help enforce already existing disaster myths among the general public and organizational actors. Examples of such myths are the notions that disasters are accompanied by looting, social disorganization, panic, and deviant behavior. This is relevant because the Japanese people after the disaster seemed to subvert many of those myths. Surprisingly, this subversion was seen as conformation of the Japanese supposedly stoic yet respectful nature, therefore affirming Orientalist stereotypes. Through the application of these theories and a qualitative data analysis of a selection of 200 images, this research uncovers how stereotypical cues and tropes about Japanese people manifest themselves in these photographs. Whether or not Western news media possess that knowledge and thus deliberately choose to photographs with stereotypical elements, however, are two wholly different questions.Show less

Whereas former talent shows have been suspended because of ‘low moral standards and vulgar content’, TVoC already finished its third season in 2014. In this thesis I show that traditional Chinese values can intertwine perfectly with the Western values of TVoC, and that the discourse of harmony is reinforced multiple times in the end. The traditional values and the concept of harmony are in line with what the Chinese government propagates. Taking this and the restrictions on former talent shows into account I therefore argue that self-censorship of TVoC due to soft-power of the government has been the case in talent show TVoC.Show less

For this purpose, it investigates how the issue is perceived from the Arabic and from the Western European perspective, what both of these views have in common and where the differences between them. In the opening section, the results of a literature research are presented, which focuses on academic Arabic sources, articles on the Aljazeera website, and academic publications by West European authors. In this context, various aspects of the phenomenon such as the definition of the term, roots and causes, the role of media and of the political right, and its relation to the anti-Semitism are considered. As example of manifestation of Islamophobia the French head scarf ban is discussed. Comparing the Arabic and the Western European view on Islamophobia, one cannot detect specific differences concerning the definition of the term, albeit the latter appears contested and vague. In contrast, the identified reasons for Islamophobia and the role attributed to media and the political right are controversial and depend very much on the particular perspective involved. While the majority of the Western sources identifies the reason of Islamophobia as the perceived incompatibility of Islam with Western and European values, Arab authors mostly hold Western misunderstanding and lack of knowledge responsible for the phenomenon. They also attribute an essential role to media and the political right in its dissemination. While at least the majority of the Arab sources attribute a positive character to the headscarf, in Western Europe it is frequently understood as symbol of a radical Islam and gender discrimination, therefore justifying its ban. The comparison with anti-Semitism appears to be restricted to the Western European perspective, which is possibly due to the role this phenomenon has played in Europe's history.Show less

Four years later, Geert Wilders published his own anti-Islam film, Fitna. These movies were both a reason for and a consequence of a Dutch sociopolitical climate in which anti-Islam sentiments were widely spread. Using academic literature about orientalism, media and gender, such as described by Edward Said as well as many others, I researched the use of orientalist characteristics in representing Muslims and the Islam in both of these movies, paying attention to the texts, visual aspects and implications of the films, as well as looking at the intentions of the makers and the place of the movies in the wider Dutch context.Show less

In berichtgeving rondom de financieel-economische crisis (2008-2013) in...Show moreEconomisch hoogleraren zijn voor journalisten met name vanwege de onafhankelijke duiding een belangrijke bron van expertise. In berichtgeving rondom de financieel-economische crisis (2008-2013) in elf landelijke dagbladen worden 250 onderzochte hoogleraren bijna 13.000 keer bij naam genoemd. De journalistieke bronkeuze resulteert in een dominante elite van media-economen. Het zeer selecte gezelschap van vijf economen zorgt voor een kwart van de naamsvermeldingen, slechts twaalf personen voor de helft. De discrepantie tussen expertise zoals gepresenteerd in de media en het academische veld is groots. Geen van de economen in de academische top mag zich onder de veelgevraagde media-economen scharen. In het licht van het onafhankelijke karakter is het opvallend dat negen van de tien meestgevraagde economen een of meerdere relaties heeft met commerciële instellingen. Diversiteit in bronkeuze is onder de dagbladen van redelijk gelijke aard. De Volkskrant slaagt hierin het beste, Metro, De Telegraaf en Sp!ts vertonen grotere afwijkingen. Ten tijde van de economische crisis is sprake geweest van een groot, zichzelf versterkend, matteüseffect. Een elite van deelnemers aan het publieke debat is dusdanig zichtbaar dat zij almaar meer aandacht en macht krijgen toebedeeld. Ook inhoudelijk blijken zij eensgezind: 80 procent van de oordelen over het kabinetsbeleid zijn negatief van aard. De duidingsfunctie is verre van strikt evaluatief: niet de kritiek op een beleidsmaatregel staat centraal, maar de normatieve beoordeling van de uitkomst. De vervaging van de grens tussen de economische en politieke visie vraagt om een andere journalistiek. Een waarin veel kritischer wordt gekeken naar bronkeuze en de kleuring van het economisch publieke debat.Show less

A comparison of the democracy movements of the 1980s and the labour movements of the 2000s is the central focus of the paper with special attention given to the role of the media, and social networking, in the development of these movements. It is argued that both movements share the strikingly similar grievances and methods of organization, and that the media, despite its continuing liberalization, continues to play only a marginal role.Show less
