In a three stage source monitoring test, offender subjects were expected to make more attribution mistakes than innocent subjects and it was explored whether strategic offenders could suppress the source confusion. Innocent subjects have better source memory than offender subjects and strategic offenders are more accurate on all items compared to neutral offenders. This indicates that the tool is able to discriminate between the different groups. Focusing on the items only seen at T1 (this resembles the crime scene), no significant results were found. The main purpose of this study was to explore whether source confusion could be observed in this particular setting. This is confirmed but to develop a tool, more research is needed. Due to the exploratory nature of the study, some limitations are mentioned.Show less
