Show less

By applying a quantitative, citation-based analysis, it contributes to existing research on trends affecting the use of transnational academic knowledge and expertise in Dutch policy advisory bodies. The study seeks to contribute to the debate on the changing dynamics of Policy Advisory Systems and the influence of international sources of knowledge on domestic policy formation. Foreign policy advice will be examined as a case study. This adds a novel element, as foreign policy is seldomly analyzed from a Public Administration perspective. The methodology employed will make use of reports published by the Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken (AIV), by looking at the number of domestic and international sources cited, amongst other variables. The thesis will be structured as follows; firstly a preliminary overview of policy advisory systems literature will be given before theory on internationalization more generally, and in policy advice specifically, will be included. The theory will be applied to the context of the Dutch Foreign Policy Advisory System before the research design will introduce the methods utilized. The empirical chapter, analysis, conclusion and discussion will round off this thesis.Show less

Simultaneously, continuous population growth and water scarcity prompting the rising demand for water, illustrates the necessity for large capital investments in infrastructure to ensure universal water access. For this reason, water management and regulation play a crucial role in water provision, as well as, in achieving sufficient profits for the water system’s economic sustainability. The main focus of this thesis is whether both, social equity and economic efficiency, can be achieved by water utility systems. This thesis studies the social and economic performance of six different water utility services in Bolivia, as well as, the effects of certain public policies on social equity and economic efficiency. Finally, it argues that the six cases of private, public, and cooperative water utility services analysed, show deficiencies in either one of the two criteria.Show less

This research explores and explains why the private sector participates in crisis response data collaboratives. Through secondary literature analysis, and primary survey and interview analysis of three case studies, this research provides new insights into data collaborative objectives, the private sector’s activities, the incentives and risks these collaboratives present for the private sector, and how it mitigates such risks. The research concludes that the private sector enters crisis response data collaboratives to help the public sector address one or more of its obstacles to creating data-driven solutions to societal problems, and occasionally to achieve additional objectives for the public good. Although the private sector is motivated by various incentives, sufficient mitigation of presented risks, especially risks to data subjects’ privacy and security, is a precondition to joining a crisis response data collaborative.Show less

By using the Dutch Parliamentary Election Study from 1998 to 2003, the observed change in public opinion of Dutch voters towards non western immigrants is tested. Results include the inability to explain the changes in public opinion according to the RAS model. However, key variables such as political knowledge and political predispositions prove to be significant explanatory variables in this case.Show less

This research tries to shed light on that question, by investigating if politicians follow the public in the area of political tolerance. However, instead of linking thoughts about political tolerance among the public with thoughts of politicians, this research tries to link thoughts about political tolerance among the public with actions conducted by politicians. In other words, do politicians act more (or less) tolerant when the public is more (or less) tolerant? This question is investigated by doing a content analysis of state of the union addresses. These results are then compared with survey results considering political tolerance among the public to see whether or not there is a relationship between the two variables. After this analysis, it is concluded that the level of political tolerance among the public, and the level of tolerance in actions conducted by politicians are negatively related, where actions by politicians become more (less) tolerant when the public is less (more) tolerant.Show less
