This study aims to explore the effectiveness of recent sanctions against Russia by identifying factors that have obstructed their goal of curtailing Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. Using an explanatory qualitative approach, the paper examines sanctions’ design, objectives, outcomes, and Russia’s political climate and international relations policies. The findings illustrate how the internal power dynamics within Russia and its current international strategies in response to sanctions influence the country’s capacity to continue the military invasion. Specifically, it demonstrates how such factors bolster Russia’s confidence in its current strategies toward Ukraine, thereby undermining the effectiveness of sanctions. These insights can assist policymakers in designing sanctions against autocracies that are highly integrated into the global economy and political environment. Additionally, this research is relevant to academic studies on sanctions imposed on authoritarian states by providing perspectives into their responses and resilience to international sanctions.Show less
