There are different factors that contribute to the popularity of social media usage in Indonesia. The most important motive behind remains the wide accessibility of mobile internet devices. Social media has been a main focal point for cultural exchanging and cultural expressions. It has shaped and created idealistic lifestyles, beauty perceptions, fashion trends and religious/educational resources are shared freely in a high pace. Especially on the social network application Instagram, visual representations are easily being shared using photographic posts. Along with the impact of globalization, Indonesian Instagram users are the interlinked and in direct involvement with the outer world. It cannot be denied that social media platforms strengthen the power of the active individual agent and that the social media application becomes an empowerment tool to the audience. Besides the evident benefits, social media has brought a series of negative effects to the Indonesian society as well. Ethical conflicts and moral violations of visual social media content have inflamed the debate on social media literacy education. Also, excessive monthly expenditures are a result of the problematic high consumer culture that circulates on Instagram. Especially the most dominant group users –Indonesian youngsters– seem to be the most vulnerable group for these online complications. It is therefore of the interest to highlight how the Indonesian youth approaches and practice social media applications. This paper explores cultural Indonesian youth studies further on virtual terrain, with its focus on the photo-sharing application Instagram.Show less

Austin and refined by J. Searle. This thesis shows that the introduction of social media has led to the existence of a new illocutionary act that is not covered by existing speech act theory: the illocutionary act of hashtagging. It is argued that hashtagging is a meta-speech act that has no counterpart offline and is deserving of its own category within existing speech act theory.Show less

Snapchat heeft zeer specifieke eigenschappen: content moet live...Show moreDoor het gebruik van nieuwe media in de journalistiek, zoals Snapchat, rijst de vraag wat dit doet met de journalistieke content. Snapchat heeft zeer specifieke eigenschappen: content moet live zijn, content verdwijnt weer (Bayer et al, 2015) en er zijn allerlei bewerkingstools aanwezig (Piwerk en Joinson, 2016). Snapchat is erg populair onder jongeren en het is daarom niet gek dat een nieuwsorganisatie als de NOS Snapchat gebruikt om die doelgroep te bereiken. In eerdere onderzoeken naar blogs (Singer, 2005) en Twitter (Lasorsa et al, 2012) werd onderzocht in hoeverre een nieuw medium de journalistieke normen van onpartijdigheid, transparantie en gatekeeping schaadt. Uit deze onderzoeken bleek dat journalisten grofweg dezelfde journalistieke normen en werkwijze handhaafden op blogs als binnen traditionele journalistiek, maar dat dit op Twitter veranderde. Journalisten gebruikten enerzijds hun traditionele normen binnen Twitter, maar pasten zich ook aan Twitter aan. In dit onderzoek zijn 186 snaps van NOS Snaplines geanalyseerd aan de hand van de drie begrippen: onpartijdigheid, transparantie en gatekeeping. Uit de resultaten blijkt NOS Snaplines relatief onpartijdig wanneer het gaat om tekst. Wanneer er naar bewerkingstools zoals emoji’s en stickers wordt gekeken, blijkt dat deze bewerkingen de snaps wel partijdig maken. Deze bewerkingstools kunnen namelijk ook emoties of meningen verkondigen. Eerder onderzoek stelt dat journalisten een manier zoeken om emoties uit te besteden. Dit kan een journalist doen door niet zijn eigen emoties op te schrijven, maar de emoties van een ander (Wahl-Jorgensen). Er zou in het geval van NOS Snaplines gesteld kunnen worden dat emoties worden uitbesteed aan eigenschappen van een medium, door bijvoorbeeld emoji’s binnen Snapchat in te zetten. NOS Snaplines blijkt uit de analyse over een lage mate van transparantie te beschikken, terwijl social media normaliter transparanter zijn dan traditionele media (Singer, 2005; Lasorsa et al, 2012). Hyperlinking maakt social media transparant, maar Snapchat heeft deze mogelijkheid niet. Toch zijn er andere manieren om transparant te zijn. Zo is Snapchat een medium waar juist alledaagse content, materiaal van achter de schermen en content vanaf locatie kan worden geplaatst, wat transparant kan worden bevonden maar weinig gebeurt in NOS Snaplines. Uit de analyse naar het derde begrip, gatekeeping, blijkt dat de rol van gatekeeper sterk wordt bewaakt binnen NOS Snaplines. Het podium wordt niet snel gedeeld. De begrippen onpartijdigheid, transparantie en gatekeeping lijken nog gehandhaafd te worden binnen Snapchat, in die zin kan gesteld worden dat de journalisten Snapchat ‘normalizen’. Ze zorgen dat hun eigen normen en waarden gebruikt kunnen worden in het nieuwe medium. Gesteld kan worden dat NOS Snaplines nog lijkt op een traditioneel achtuurjournaal, uit de analyse is gebleken dat zelfs de opbouw hetzelfde is. Maar aan de andere 3 kant gebruiken de Snaplines-redacteuren emoji’s en stickers die het nieuws partijdig maken. In eerder onderzoek naar Twitter viel op dat er minder waarde werd gehecht aan het concept van onpartijdigheid (Lasorsa et al 2012), wat ook het geval blijkt te zijn in NOS Snaplines. Dit duidt op het idee dat binnen sociale-mediajournalistiek voornamelijk de journalistieke norm van onpartijdigheid aan het veranderen is. Hoewel in de literatuur het dominante paradigma is dat subjectiviteit en emoties in nieuws beperkt moeten worden, zijn er ook tegengeluiden waarbij onderzoekers een positievere houding hebben tegenover emotionele (meer partijdige) journalistiek (Pantti, 2010; Wahl-Jorgensen, 2013; Opgenhaffen en Welbers, 2017). Want opiniërend, persoonlijk en subjectief nieuws kan een voordeel hebben op feitelijk nieuws omdat consumenten, zeker op social media, worden overspoeld met feitelijk nieuws. Een interpretatie kan dan een extra laag geven aan het objectieve nieuws (Marchi, 2012). Daarnaast blijkt uit de analyse dat de nieuwsonderwerpen die worden besproken vooral bestaan uit non-public affairs, oftewel nieuws dat aantrekkelijk is voor jongeren, maar waarvan journalisten normaliter denken dat het minder nieuwswaarde heeft (Boczkowski & Mitchelstein, 2010). Hoewel NOS Snaplines-redacteuren aan de ene kant hun journalistieke normen gebruiken binnen Snapchat, passen ze ook hun werkwijze aan Snapchat aan. Hieruit kan geconcludeerd worden dat redacteuren van NOS Snaplines op een andere manier journalistiek bedrijven en dat de journalistiek wel degelijk verandert door een nieuw medium als Snapchat.Show less
Dit onderzoek richt zich op de vraag wat de gedragscodes voor social media bij het Algemeen Dagblad, de NOS en het NRC zijn en wat journalisten van deze gedragscodes vinden. Waar op nieuwsredacties...Show moreDit onderzoek richt zich op de vraag wat de gedragscodes voor social media bij het Algemeen Dagblad, de NOS en het NRC zijn en wat journalisten van deze gedragscodes vinden. Waar op nieuwsredacties door onderling overleg een filter bestaat voor publicaties, geldt dit voor de directe, individuele social media niet. Zeker in het verleden was er onder journalisten veel onduidelijkheid over wat op social media is toegestaan en hierdoor werden soms uitspraken gedaan die imagoschade opleverden. Heldere gedragscodes kunnen dan de benodigde filter zijn. Mede om deze reden hebben nieuwsmedia in binnen en buitenland gedragscodes voor social media opgesteld. In twee studies zijn diverse buitenlandse gedragscodes en de meningen over gedragscodes geanalyseerd (Opgenhaffen & Scheerlinck, 2014; Opgenhaffen & D’Haenens, 2015), maar in Nederland nog niet. De opgestelde gedragscodes ten spijt, uit de resultaten van dit onderzoek blijkt dat op sommige belangrijke onderwerpen nog steeds onduidelijkheid is. In eerste instantie zeggen journalisten dat zij niet zitten te wachten op gedragscodes voor social media, omdat common sense voldoende zou zijn. Maar de journalisten spreken elkaar vervolgens tegen; wat de een normaal gedrag op social media vindt, vindt de ander onwenselijk. De resultaten tonen aan dat het voor nieuwsorganisaties belangrijk is om te bepalen en vast te leggen welke social media zij zien als privédomein en welke social media als een openbaar (journalistiek) platform. Er is vooral onenigheid over de vraag of Facebook privé of openbaar is en daardoor ook over de vraag wat wenselijk gedrag is op Facebook. Op een gevoelig onderwerp als privacy zijn eveneens aanvullende gedragscodes nodig. Gedragscodes over het met foto, naam en toenaam citeren van mensen ontbreken, terwijl journalisten hierover sterk van mening verschillen. Tot slot kunnen pijnlijke fouten worden voorkomen door strengere regels op te stellen voor berichtgeving na aanslagen. Als er een fout wordt gemaakt, moet er bovendien ruimer worden gerectificeerd. Uiteindelijk draaien gedragscodes om normering, uniformiteit en professionaliteit. Ze kunnen daarom bijdragen aan efficiënt en eenduidig werken op nieuwsredacties en bovendien aan het herstel van het vertrouwen in de journalistiek. Daarom is het afhouden van gedragscodes voor social media een gemiste kans.Show less
Humans of New York (HONY) is the result of technological changes such as camera phones and social media that so strongly has influenced the way we produce, consume and reproduce photography....Show moreHumans of New York (HONY) is the result of technological changes such as camera phones and social media that so strongly has influenced the way we produce, consume and reproduce photography. Digital network interactions that reshape modes of socializing contributes to dehumanization, while at the same time the easiness and rapidness with which photographs can be reproduced provoke the emergence of modern iconoclasm. Unintentionally, HONY counter-reacts both by creating a sense of human community that avoids visual saturation blindness. Its use of traditional photography has lead to position it within some of the photographic genre debates due to its users’ perception and reception. This professionalization of an amateur photographic project represents a problem for the academic field. The lack of an academic background prevents this type of photography from representing truthfulness ethically. Unconsciously, HONY perpetuates stereotypes and manipulates its viewers by appealing to sentimentalism, while at the same time falls into the tradition of the victim. This issues point at the fact of an urgent need for theorizing and conceptualizing this type of photography that despite being amateur is perceived within the professional photographic practice.Show less

Reading has become a shared experience, and book marketing can be further advanced through an interactive bond publishers establish with readers. As experience goods and recreational products, books requires a tailored marketing approach that is ideally customized even further in regard of the different markets targeted by individual titles. Libraries stimulate book borrowing by connecting with readers and encouraging the act of reading, and publishers can do the same. Reading promotion adds to the appeal of buying books in general: by promoting reading besides individual titles, and through collaborating with other stakeholders and pooling resources, publishers are collectively able to cover a wide field of book promotion that eventually benefits individual sales as well.Show less

The motives for this research are both to create more awareness and support for archaeology and to meet the needs of people that are interested in archaeology. This topic is addressed by analysing blogs and social networking sites. Additionally, it is examined whether these digital communication methods can help reach non-traditional audiences, particularly to engage the more difficult to reach target group of young adults. To be able to answer the research questions, questionnaires were set up for three target groups: bloggers, blog readers and young adults. A total number of 1.174 respondents have provided for many new insights regarding the use of blogs and social networking sites in archaeology, which messages need to be communicated and in which ways they can be communicated. Among other things, it has appeared that there are still some significant differences in the preferences of blog readers and the content that bloggers mainly blog about: most blog readers prefer to read about specific archaeological regions, excavations and sites, while most bloggers blog about personal opinions on archaeological matters. Blogs and social networking sites can contribute to making archaeology more accessible for a wider public and reaching out to young adults by incorporating and listening to the preferences, ideas, needs and wishes of the audiences they reach and of young adults themselves. Specifically regarding young adults, there are several approaches that can be applied in order to reach them. This requires depending less on the technology of blogs and social media and requires more of a focus on the content and message.Show less

This movement has since inspired many people to take action for Indigenous rights and environmental preservation. In this thesis I will research which historical, social, economical, environmental and political factors contributed to the origination and the continuing impact of the Idle No More movement to answer the question: who is Idle No More, and what does being Idle No More mean to those involved?Show less

Het publiek...Show moreSociale media krijgen een steeds belangrijkere rol in de wereldwijde nieuwsconsumptie. Nieuwsorganisaties spelen hier op in door een selectie van hun content op sociale media te delen. Het publiek kan aan de slag met de content: sharen, liken en commenten zijn ingeburgerde termen. Maar hoewel er veel onderzoek is gedaan naar nieuwsselectiecriteria voor traditionele nieuwsmedia, ontbreekt onderzoek naar de eigenschappen die nieuwsberichten op sociale media ‘sociaal’ maken: berichten die veel likes, comments en shares ontvangen. Binnen deze masterscriptie is onderzocht in hoeverre de nieuwsselectiecriteria van Harcup en O’Neill (2001) invloed hebben op de mate waarin mensen interageren met nieuwsberichten op de Facebookpagina van de NOS. Berichten die voldoen aan de nieuwsselectiecriteria bekende mensen, entertainment, verrassing en goed nieuws leveren significant meer likes op. Het criterium verrassing levert ook significant meer comments en shares op. Voor de criteria slecht nieuws en magnitude geldt het omgekeerde: zij genereren significant minder likes. Berichten die voldoen aan het criterium entertainment leveren significant minder comments op. Foto’s, fotoalbums en hypertekst leveren significant meer likes op. Bovendien leveren foto’s en hypertekst ook meer comments en shares op. Slechts een aantal nieuwselectiecriteria kan verklaren dat een bericht als ‘sociaal’ wordt beschouwd, en zodoende interactie in de vorm van likes, comments en shares genereert. De nieuwsselectiecriterialijst moet dan ook herzien worden voor sociale media, indien interactie van het publiek met de content een van de na streven doelen is.Show less

Journalisten moeten transparant zijn in hun werkwijze en waar nodig verantwoording afleggen. Een mogelijkheid hiervoor is bijvoorbeeld een ombudsman, maar deze is duur. Twitter, populair onder journalisten, is wellicht een goedkope oplossing. Iedere journalist is op Twitter zijn eigen ombudsman (Meier, 2009). Maar dat ligt lastiger, omdat Twitter ook een middel is om journalistieke producties te promoten. Een inhoudsanalyse naar duizend tweets van programmamakers van NOS op 3 toont aan dat frames (Esser en D’Angelo, 2003) die positief zijn voor de accountability vaker voorkomen dan frames die negatief zijn en vooral gericht ter promotie. Twitter maakt de nieuwsrubriek transparanter, omdat het een kijkje in de keuken biedt. Vooral foto’s verduidelijken het dagelijkse nieuwsproces. Echter, interviews met verschillende redacteuren van de nieuwsrubriek laten zien dat het gebruik van Twitter individueel verschilt. Een duidelijk handboek is nodig om alle neuzen dezelfde kant op te wijzen. Op die manier kan Twitter beter gebruikt worden als accountabilitytool, want die mogelijkheid lijkt het wel te bieden. Voorwaarde is dat het publiek beter aangesproken wordt, zodat er ook input komt vanuit de kijker. Nu zijn er nog nauwelijks conversaties, dus is er weinig verantwoording nodig. Al bestaat de kans dat het publiek helemaal geen behoefte heeft aan transparantie en verantwoording.Show less
