However, the...Show moreThe failure to speak of children with selective mutism (SM) has been conceptualized as a specific emotion regulation strategy to avoid extreme arousal in stressful (social) situations. However, the underlying psychophysiological mechanisms of their failure to speak, and the development of these children over time, are still not well understood. The current study examined the arousal (heart rate and heart rate variability) of 33 children with SM and 42 typically developing children (comparison group, CG), aged 4 to 8 years, during rest and during a verbal and non-verbal social evaluation stress paradigm. Moreover, 18 children with SM participated in a follow-up measurement after almost all of them had received treatment. Children with SM had a significantly higher arousal during rest. However, their reactivity arousal (performance minus baseline) during a verbal and non-verbal stress task did not differ from the CG. Moreover, at the follow-up measurement, children with SM showed significantly lower baseline arousal compared to the first measurement, and no difference in verbal and non-verbal reactivity arousal. The results indicate that children with SM have elevated stress levels compared to typically developing children, even in a non-verbal situation. Over time, after treatment, their stress levels tend to ‘normalize’. These findings do not support the avoidance hypothesis and might indicate a more inflexible stress response to a stressful situation in children with SM compared to typically developing children.Show less

The consequence of this is that adolescents are more vulnerable to the effects of social stress. When exposed to social stress, the body produces an initial stress response which is then followed by an inflammation response by the immune system. Cytokines are proteins that have been implicated in the immune system inflammatory response after exposure to social stress. Victimisation by peers has been found to elevate cytokine reactivity after exposure to acute social stress. Social stress can be induced in a lab using the Trier Social Stress Test. Having quality relationships with peers and parents is a protective factor to the impact of peer victimisation. In adults, quality of relationships has been shown to reduce immune reactivity to social stress. Therefore, it was hypothesised that in adolescents’ quality of relationship would act as a mediator to acute social stress for those who have experienced peer victimisation. To investigate this hypothesis 79 Dutch adolescents (48% females, 52% males) with an age range of 14-16 years participated in the study. The procedure involved the completion of a series of questionnaires, a period of relaxation, pre-test dried blood spot sampling, participation in the TSST and then post-test dried blood spot sampling. Peer victimisation was measured using the Revised Experiences Questionnaire. The level of cytokines Il6, IL8, IL10 and TNFα detected in the pre and post test blood spot samples were used to measure the inflammatory response to social stress. Quality of relationship with best friend and primary parent were measured using the Network of Relationship Inventory. A mediation analysis was conducted with peer victimisation as the predictor variable, quality of relationship as the mediator variable and cytokine reactivity as the outcome variable; based on previous research BMI, sleep quality, physical health and cognitive stress appraisal were included as control variables. The results of the mediation analysis did not support the hypothesis that quality of relationship in adolescence mediates cytokine reactivity to acute social stress for prior peer victimisation. However, a post-hoc analysis with extreme outliers removed from the cytokine reactivity scores revealed a significant effect between negative quality relationships and TNF-α. This study extends previous research by exploring cytokine reactivity to social stress in a group of healthy adolescents. It highlights the need for further investigation in this population particularly in relation to negative quality relationships and cytokine reactivity, specifically TNF-α. This would enable a more comprehensive understanding of the interplay between social experience and immune response in typically developing adolescents.Show less
The present study is a longitudinal study that examined whether depression in adolescence within a two-year gap could be predicted by adolescents’ stress responses to social stressors, while also...Show moreThe present study is a longitudinal study that examined whether depression in adolescence within a two-year gap could be predicted by adolescents’ stress responses to social stressors, while also investigating whether gender and age play a role in this prediction. At T1, participants were 205 adolescents between 12 and 17 years old (mean age=14.81 year, SD=1.31, 49.3% female). This study also replicated past studies that investigated gender differences in depression and stress responses including coping. The Response to Stress Questionnaire was used as an instrument to assess adolescents’ reaction and coping methods to social stressors, whereby the participants indicated the ways in which they react to social stressors on a four-point scale. Furthermore, the depressive symptoms of the participants were measured with the Children Depression Inventory at two time points two years apart, whereby the participants answer a 27-item self-report questionnaire. Based on the results of the statistical analyses, there were no significant gender differences in depression, nor were there significant age-related differences in depression between adolescent girls and boys. There were, however, significant gender differences in stress responses, namely Primary Control Engagement coping and Involuntary Engagement stress response. And finally, Primary Control Engagement coping, gender, and depression at T1 significantly predicted depression at T2, however the interaction effects of gender, age, and gender by age with the stress response did not significantly predict depression at T2. In conclusion, later depression can be predicted by stress responses, however gender and age do not moderate this prediction.Show less

Studies have shown that psychosocial factors might influence nocebo hyperalgesia and...Show moreNocebo hyperalgesia is the phenomenon in which negative pain expectations lead to augmented pain experiences. Studies have shown that psychosocial factors might influence nocebo hyperalgesia and facilitate nocebo responses in clinical settings, thus worsening pain. This study aimed to identify whether social stress, fear of pain and pain catastrophizing influence the magnitude of nocebo hyperalgesia. Higher nocebo hyperalgesic responses were anticipated. Additionally, the potential mediating role of subjective stress was explored. Twenty-five healthy male and female participants were recruited and randomly assigned to the experimental (social stress) and control (no-stress) conditions, which underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and a friendly version of it (friendly-TSST), correspondingly. Fear of pain and pain catastrophizing were measured with the Fear of Pain Questionnaire-III and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Subjective stress was measured on a 0-10 Numeric Rating Scale. A sham electrical stimulation device was applied to induce nocebo along with negative verbal suggestions of pain worsening. Thermal pain stimuli were paired with ON (nocebo trial) and OFF (control trial) visual signs during the acquisition and testing blocks of nocebo conditioning. The first nocebo and control trials of the testing block were compared to estimate the extent of nocebo hyperalgesia. One-way ANOVA, simple linear regression and mediation analysis with the method of bootstrapping were applied (P < 0.05). The one-way ANOVA was non-significant between the social stress and no-stress conditions (P = 0.74). Regression results were non-significant for fear of pain (B = - 0.38, P = 0.11) and pain catastrophizing (B = - 0.30, P = 0.22). Mediation analysis for subjective stress revealed a non significant indirect effect of - 0.009 (95% BCa CI [-1.10, 0.68]). Our study suggests that social stress does not appear to increase the magnitude of nocebo hyperalgesia and that fear of pain and pain catastrophizing might not predict higher nocebo hyperalgesic responses. In addition, subjective stress may not mediate the relationship between social stress and nocebo hyperalgesia. In conclusion, as social stress, fear of pain, pain catastrophizing and subjective stress can co-occur in clinical practices, future research could examine their potential cumulative effect on nocebo hyperalgesia.Show less
