In addition, the possible mediating role of empathy in these processes was investigated. In total, 395 participants (from 63 families) reported about both experienced and perpetrated child abuse and neglect. Multiple regression analyses were used to analyze information from fathers, mothers, and children. The results showed a significant intergenerational transmission of both child abuse and neglect. Furthermore, empathy did not appear to be a significant mediator in these processes. The findings of this study highlight the importance of using an ecological approach in both science and practice.Show less
