The current retrospective study investigated whether non-intervention of bystanders had an effect on victims who experienced undesired behavior in the workplace. We hypothesized the fulfilment of victims’ four fundamental needs would go down, their self-blame would be higher, their perpetrator blame would be lower, and their negative emotions would be higher because of the non-intervention of bystanders. The data from 150 participants were analyzed and results showed main effects of intervention of bystanders, the need to belong, the need for meaningful existence, and self-blame. Here, passive bystanders affected these needs more negatively than active bystanders. Additional analyses also showed main effects for the need to belong, bystander blame, and positive emotions. However, no main effects were found of the need for control and self-esteem, perpetrator blame, and negative emotions. Practical implications regarding the work environment and awareness are discussed.Show less

Carrying out a qualitative content analysis of all news articles on refugees uploaded over a period of six years, it has been possible to construct four distinct connotative frames that used to depict refugees: normalization, victimization, burden and threat. The results show that on the long-term, the victimization-frame turned out to be the most popular frame to use on refugees. Additionally, online news turns out to be susceptible to the occurrence of key events, which occurrence determines the dominant frame of the subsequent weeks. This study nuances the idea that refugees are increasingly portrayed negatively by providing a long-term insight and shows the diffuse process and developments that have occurred over time.Show less

The present study investigated the relationship between childhood neglect and NSSI, and whether intimate partner violence (IPV) mediates any of the effects. We conducted a secondary data analysis of an online survey on various constructs relating to childhood maltreatment, borderline personality disorder features, emotion regulation, and IPV. From there, a mediation analysis was performed on the before mentioned variables NSSI, childhood neglect, and IPV. Results indicated that there is no (partial) mediating effect of IPV on the relationship between childhood neglect and NSSI (B=.0016, SE=.0010, CI: [-.0003, .0035]). Given the increased risk of suicide, more attention should be paid to NSSI in people with a history of childhood neglect.Show less
