There has been significant discourse in academic and policymaking spheres concerning migratory pull factors; in particular whether prospective socio-economic entitlements in destination countries are determinants of asylum applicants’ destination choice. Employment rights feature prominently in these discourses, yet few studies directly examine the relationship between labour market access and asylum inflows. This paper exploits Ireland’s transposition of the Recast Reception Conditions Directive in 2018, which ended a comprehensive ban on asylum applicants’ access to the labour market, in order to study the effects of labour market access on the magnitude and demographic composition of asylum applications. Using difference in difference and regression discontinuity methodologies, this paper finds that the labour market access reform caused an increase in the number of asylum applications and in the proportion of working-age applicants in Ireland. These findings contribute to a small body of quasi-experimental literature on the determinants of asylum inflows to destination countries.Show less

In the Netherlands, the introduction of the Participation Act on January 1, 2015, drastically decentralized government powers with the dual objectives of delivering effective customization for vulnerable groups of welfare recipients and cost savings. This shift reflects a global trend in which governments reduce the welfare state and focus more on active citizen participation in society. Therefore, the central question that arises is how such significant changes in the social security system, combined with austerity measures, effectively reduce inequality in society. By employing a Difference-in-Differences analysis of data from the Dutch Household Survey (DHS), the effects of the Participation Act on employment and income inequality over the period 2010-2022 is examined. Based on statistically significant results, the hypothesis that over this period, the Participation Act failed to improve both the number of employed individuals and the actual hours worked among the target group compared to the general workforce is rejected. The research identifies a worrisome trend in increased inequalities concerning employment in society. However, the results support the expectation that the Participation Act has not been effective in improving income inequalities for the target group compared to non-welfare recipients. The study also reveals concerning outcomes for the income development of the Participation Act’s target group, which is on the brink of poverty and has no prospect of an improved situation. Thus, it is concluded that the Participation Act has not had a positive effect on reducing employment and income inequality among welfare recipients. Furthermore, recommendations are made for future reforms and further research on the relationship between the welfare state and social inequality.Show less

The smoking rate is not decreasing enough to reach this target. This study looks at the association between smoking behavior and life satisfaction to find ways to influence smokers to quit. This study aims to assess what the association is between life satisfaction and smoking behavior in the Netherlands. It will also look into the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on smoking behavior and the effect that age has on the relationship between life satisfaction and smoking behavior. Data from the LISS-panel is used to conduct a fixed effects regression analysis. The results show that there is no significant association between life satisfaction and smoking behavior in any of the cases. This is contradictory to past research, which all found a significant negative association. The only significant associations are between the control variables anxiety and exercise, and smoking behavior. Both have a negative association with smoking behavior. The effect of exercise on smoking behavior is the strongest for people aged 65 and older. Based on these results, the policy recommendation is to stimulate exercise, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle and reduce the number of cigarettes people smoke.Show less

De hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek is: Kan een Digital Twin vanuit het burgerperspectief bijdragen aan het verkleinen van een informatie-asymmetrie tussen coproducerende burgers en overheidsprofessionals? Over de informatie-asymmetrie en Digital Twins is niet zo veel bekend. Op basis van literatuuronderzoek en acht vignette-interviews is de conclusie dat een Digital Twin zeker een een geschikt middel zijn om de informatie-asymmetrie tussen burger en overheid te verkleinen. De asymmetrie zit in de proces- en vakkennis tussen zowel burgers onderling als de overheid en de burger. Dit creëert ongewenste verschillen. Een Digital Twin kan een rol spelen om die asymmetrie te verkleinen. Ondanks de ondersteuning van een Digital Twin zal tussen overheid en burger altijd een vorm van informatie-asymmetrie aanwezig blijven. Het toevoegen van verschillende informatieniveaus is een oplossing om de verschillende doelgroepen tussen de burgers beter te bereiken.Show less

Een democratie bestaat immers in ieder geval uit volkssoevereiniteit en meerderheidsheerschappij. Responsiviteit maakt hier een essentieel onderdeel van uit aangezien dit gaat over de mate waarin het handelen van de overheid, zoals vastgelegd in beleid en wet-en regelgeving, in overeenstemming is met de wil van het volk. Hoewel er veel onderzoek bestaat naar (overheids)responsiviteit en diens werking aan de ene kant en onderzoek naar politieke partijen en diens (electorale) werking aan de andere kant, is er geen recent en gedegen onderzoek dat deze twee min of meer gescheiden onderzoekvelden in de Europese context combineert. Dit onderzoek kijkt daarom als een van de eerste, aan de hand van een grote steekproef van Europese landen en een focus op herverdeling als concreet beleidsissue, naar de (mediërende) rol die politieke partijen spelen in de link tussen publieke opinie en (overheids)beleid via de centrale onderzoeksvraag: wat is het effect van voorkeuren van burgers ten aanzien van herverdeling op het daadwerkelijk gevoerde beleid van nationale overheden ten aanzien van herverdeling en in welke mate verloopt dit effect via de standpunten van politieke partijen ten aanzien van herverdeling? Door middel van Granger causaliteit in SPSS wordt een unieke dataset, bestaande uit data van de ESS, CHES, OECD en WDI, geanalyseerd. Uit het onderzoek blijkt, tegen de verwachtingen in, dat de voorkeur van burgers ten aanzien van herverdeling geen effect heeft op het daadwerkelijk gevoerde beleid van nationale overheden ten aanzien van herverdeling en dat dit effect niet verloopt via de stadpunten van politieke partijen ten aanzien van herverdeling. Deze onverwachte uitkomst roepen veel vragen op die het uitgangspunt zouden kunnen zijn voor toekomstig onderzoek.Show less

Het derde hoofdstuk richt zich op het conceptueel model en de operationalisatie van de variabelen. Hierin wordt nader ingegaan op de specifieke aspecten van etniciteit en de invloed die dit heeft op beleidsontwikkeling. Het conceptueel model geeft een helder kader voor het begrijpen van de onderlinge relaties tussen deze variabelen, terwijl de operationalisatie concrete meetinstrumenten identificeert. Het vierde hoofdstuk behandelt de methodologie van het onderzoek. Hier worden de onderzoeksopzet, dataverzamelingsmethoden en analysetechnieken uitvoerig beschreven. Een van de redenen hiervoor is de kwalitatieve mismatch tussen de vraag naar arbeid en het beschikbare aanbod. Een discrepantie tussen het gevolgde opleidingsgebied en het beroep van een werknemer wordt een horizontale mismatch genoemd. In dit onderzoek wordt gekeken of een horizontale mismatch invloed heeft op het inkomen van werknemers in Nederland. Tevens wordt onderzocht of de spanning in een beroepssector in het jaar van indiensttreding een rol speelt binnen deze vraag. Met behulp van tien jaar aan LISS-paneldata en ISCO 08-gegevens van het CBS wordt er een subjectieve en een objectieve variabele voor een horizontale mismatch opgesteld. Volgens deze subjectieve en objectieve maatstaf zijn de gemiddelde percentages werknemers met een horizontale mismatch in Nederland respectievelijk 12.7% en 44.1%. Uit een fixed effects-analyse waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met niet-geobserveerde individuele heterogeniteit blijkt dat werknemers met een subjectieve horizontale mismatch een 2% lager maandelijks brutoloon ontvangen dan werknemers uit hetzelfde opleidingsgebied zonder mismatch. Deze zogenoemde loonboete is aanzienlijk gematigder dan de resultaten in de huidige literatuur, waarin voornamelijk cross-sectionele data zijn gebruikt. Daarnaast levert een analyse met de objectieve horizontale mismatch geen significante resultaten op wanneer er rekening wordt gehouden met individuele heterogeniteit.Show less

De casusselectie van de stikstofcrisis is gerechtvaardigd vanwege de maatschappelijke relevantie en intensieve lobby in dit domein. Aan de hand van dit inzicht in de patronen, strategieën en tactieken die stakeholders in lobbytrajecten hanteren, met een focus op hun gebruik van wetenschappelijke kennis, wordt er een verkennend onderzoek opgezet. Bestaande theorieën over de science-policy interface en advocacy worden getoetst op de relatie tussen wetenschap en belangenbehartigers. Door middel van semigestructureerde interviews met belangenbehartigers, wetenschappers en beleidsmakers en deskresearch van communicatie-uitingen wordt er een beeld gecreëerd van de belangrijkste aspecten die bepalen hoe, of en wanneer wetenschappelijke kennis wordt toegepast voor een lobbyactiviteit. Daarbij wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen uitdagers, traditionele, natuur en agrarische belangenbehartigers. De data wordt geüpload in een online softwareprogramma voor de kwalitatieve data-analyse, om codes toe te wijzen aan de antwoorden en patronen te identificeren. Uit deze analyse is gekomen dat de binnenroute lobby de voorkeur heeft van de meeste stakeholders en dat de capaciteit van een organisatie bepalend is voor de omgang met wetenschap, ook of dit selectief toegepast wordt. Ook is het bepalend in hoeverre een belangenbehartiger zichzelf ziet als een kennisinstituut. Naast deze kenmerken komen uit dit onderzoek ook de vier voornaamste toepassingsvormen van wetenschap in belangenbehartiging naar voren, zijnde; 1) argumentatie, 2) agendasetting, 3) twijfel en 4) maatschappelijke verbinding. Een belangrijke conclusie uit het onderzoek is dat uitdagers niet minder gebruik maken van wetenschap, maar wel anders. Traditionele belangenbehartigers gebruiken wetenschap vaak als kennisbasis, terwijl uitdagers de wetenschap eerder als instrument gebruiken. De economische belangen van agrarische partijen bepalen ook hun omgang met wetenschap in een lobby. Dit leidt met regelmaat tot het in twijfel trekken van ecologische wetenschap.Show less

In Nederland is sinds de stikstofcrisis de roep om verdere verduurzaming van het landbouwbeleid toegenomen. De roep om duurzaamheid heeft concreet handen en voeten gekregen in de landbouwtransitie. Echter, in hoeverre sluit de landbouwtransitie aan op de identiteit van boeren? In deze scriptie is middels een enquête een antwoord gevonden op deze fundamentele vraag. De boeren in Nederland blijken hoofdzakelijk een productivistische rolopvatting te hebben. De radicale vormen van de landbouwtransitie sluit daarom niet goed aan op de identiteit van boeren.Show less

Scholars argue that AI usage potentially exacerbates the...Show moreWhat is the effect of AI technology usage by bureaucrats under problematic conditions on the perceived legitimacy of bureaucratic decisions? Scholars argue that AI usage potentially exacerbates the negative consequences of misused bureaucratic discretion. Others suggest that AI usage might curtail bureaucratic discretion and increase outcomes of equity and efficiency. Existing empirical research demonstrates no significant difference between the perceived legitimacy of AI-assisted and human decision-making. This study aims to determine the effect of AI usage on the perceived legitimacy of bureaucratic decisions made under problematic principal-agent dilemma conditions. This effect is assessed across 96 survey respondents from the University of Leiden and the University of Amsterdam using experimental factorial survey analysis. The results of this research indicate that AI usage in decision-making has a significant positive effect on perceived legitimacy (p < 0.001). The main implication of this research is that AI usage can plausibly alleviate the impact of consequential bureaucratic decisions on perceived legitimacy by obscuring bureaucratic discretion. A second implication is that AI usage in bureaucratic decision-making exerts a notable effect on the perceived efficiency of bureaucratic decisions.Show less

This thesis is aimed at explaining mechanisms that contributed to the euro’s international position. The international role of the euro before and after the eurozone debt crisis will be compared, in order to explain why the euro maintained its position subsequent to this crisis. In addition, this thesis will highlight the importance of the Economic and Monetary Union due to its relation to the development of the international role of the euro. A stronger international role can be achieved by strengthening the Economic and Monetary Union, and in turn a more enhanced monetary union acts as a shield against possible financial crises. By using the new institutionalist theory of historical institutionalism along with the method of process-tracing, it is anticipated to determine critical events and to develop a process of causal mechanisms that can explain why the euro happened to maintain its international position after enduring one of the most critical economic and financial setbacks in the history of the eurozone.Show less

First,...Show moreThis thesis contributes to industrial policy by studying conditionality – the conditions attached to state aid – and linking this to the concepts of state capacity and political salience. First, this thesis addresses conditionality issues in the context of climate change, as the literature to date has focused on other development challenges such as industrial upgrading. Second, this thesis contributes to the literature by focusing on the study of conditionality in relation to advanced industrialised economies, as the existing literature is mainly focused on developing countries. In particular, this thesis aims to highlight the types of conditions that are relevant in this case compared to those identified in the literature. Third, the thesis emphasises the importance of the politics of conditionality, or the political will to activate existing state capacity. The thesis shows that an advanced economy such as the Netherlands has the state capacity to impose a policy of strong conditionality on business. In the studied case, however, this capacity has been activated by political salience, which has created a social coalition in support of this policy to impose strong conditionality.Show less
