Daarnaast is er onderzocht of de motieven van de Nederlandse Machal afwijken van de vrijwilligers waar eerder onderzoek op gebaseerd is. De volgende hoofdvraag staat daarom centraal in dit onderzoek: waarom gingen Nederlandse vrijwilligers vechten in de Arabisch-Israëlische oorlog van 1948 en hoe wijken hun motieven af van de vrijwilligers afkomstig uit andere, met name geallieerde, landen? De doorreis van deze migranten...Show moreEind negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw trokken miljoenen emigranten (met name afkomstig uit Oost-Europa) door Noordwest-Europa op weg naar Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. De doorreis van deze migranten was voor Europese transitlanden, waaronder Nederland, niet zonder risico: De mogelijkheid bestond dat de migranten ziektes verspreidden, de publieke orde verstoorden of achterbleven en een last werden voor de samenleving. Deze scriptie onderzoekt hoe de controle op transmigranten in Nederland in het Interbellum er uitzag en waarom de controle er zo uitzag. Specifiek is er in dit onderzoek ingegaan op de reactie tegenover de mogelijke verspreiding van ziektes door transmigranten, de terugkerende migranten en de doorreis van Joodse vluchtelingen uit Nazi-Duitsland. Om de invulling van de migratiecontrole te kunnen verklaren is een governance-benadering toegepast: Naast het beleid van de centrale overheid is er gekeken naar de rol van lokale autoriteiten en de scheepvaartmaatschappijen in de controle op transmigranten. Deze scriptie laat bovenal zien dat het Nederlandse transmigratiebeleid in het Interbellum niet-lineair was: De controle werd verstevigd als gevolg van crisissen en werd verminderd als de spanning verdwenen was.Show less

The end of World War Two saw the influx of millions of German-speakers from Central and Eastern Europe into a physically and economically devastated Germany that had lost a quarter of its pre-1938...Show moreThe end of World War Two saw the influx of millions of German-speakers from Central and Eastern Europe into a physically and economically devastated Germany that had lost a quarter of its pre-1938 territory. Yet one region in Germany remained largely closed to the refugees and expellees: the French zone of military occupation. In 1945, the French occupying authorities refused entry to the refugees, and though they eventually took in some over the course of their occupation, it was an order of magnitude lower than those absorbed into the American, British and Soviet zones. This thesis investigates the reasons behind this initial French position of refusal and its evolution from the immediate end of hostilities in 1945 to the creation of the West German state in 1949. In doing so, it places the question of the refugees in the broader context of France’s overall war aims and its policy towards post-war Germany and Europe. The same security, economic and demographic concerns that drove France’s Germany policy also shaped its response to the refugee crisis; the issue of the refugees and expellees usefully illustrates the trajectory French policy took over the occupation period.Show less
In dit onderzoek is gekeken naar de vraag waarom er een verschil bestond tussen de doelen van het migratiebeleid en de praktische uitvoering hiervan in de periode vlak na de Eerste Wereldoorlog....Show moreIn dit onderzoek is gekeken naar de vraag waarom er een verschil bestond tussen de doelen van het migratiebeleid en de praktische uitvoering hiervan in de periode vlak na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Deze vraag wordt gesteld in het kader van de "gap hypothesis", een hypothese die stelt dat er een groeiende kloof bestaat tussen de doelen en resultaten van nationaal migratiebeleid in hedendaagse liberale staten. Om meer te zeggen over deze kloof is in dit onderzoek gebruik gemaakt van vreemdelingendossiers van de Vreemdelingendienst met betrekking tot vreemdelingen in Nederland die een gevaar vormden voor de openbare orde, veiligheid, zedelijkheid en gezondheid. Uit de analyse van deze dossiers blijkt dat momenten van crisis, zoals de periode vlak na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, een impuls gaven aan de uitvoering van het migratiebeleid en een grote mate van consensus creëerden onder de actoren die verantwoordelijk waren voor de uitvoering van het beleid, waardoor de kloof tussen migratiebeleid en praktijk tijdelijk kromp. De kloof tussen het migratiebeleid en de praktijk hiervan is dan ook een dynamischer fenomeen dan de gap hypothesis suggereert. Crisismomenten zijn "windows of opportunity" waarbinnen ideeën die door een gebrek aan consensus vastzaten, alsnog gerealiseerd kunnen worden.Show less

Het voorlichten en voorbereiden van emigranten vormde een belangrijk onderdeel van het stimuleringsbeleid. De emigratievoorlichting en -voorbereiding speciaal ontwikkeld voor de Nederlandse vrouw wordt in deze scriptie onderzocht. Hoe en waarom werden vrouwen voorgelicht en voorbereid voor de naoorlogse emigratie uit Nederland tussen 1949 en 1961? Om deze hoofdvraag te beantwoorden zijn motieven en methodes behandeld van instanties die zich bezighielden met de emigratie van de Nederlandse vrouw, met in het bijzonder het Nederlandse Vrouwen Comité (NVC). Hierbij komt niet alleen de rol van de vrouw in het emigratieproces aan bod, maar worden ook de verhoudingen, belangen en strategieën van betrokken spelers in de emigratieregulering (emigratie-governance) blootgelegd.Show less

The analysis is build on a...Show moreIn this thesis the representation of gender in nine zombie films in the period 1968-2013 is analysed, partially based on the sociohistorical contexts they are created in. The analysis is build on a content analysis as well as a qualitative analysis of the material. This thesis explores genre-specific tropes through a gendered lense. Overall it was found that the sexualisation of female characters has increased notably over time, but they have been portrayed to be tougher simultaneously. Contrary to previous research this thesis maintains that the discussed zombie films effectively criticise stereotypical notions of gender roles through their ironic treatment of masculinity and overall favourable treatment of their female characters, who have a greater chance to thrive and survive if they transgress such roles.Show less

Aan de hand van een begrippenkader dat afkomstig is van de...Show moreDit onderzoek gaat in op de ontwikkeling van de Chinese economie en het onderliggende kapitalistische systeem in de periode 1960-2010. Aan de hand van een begrippenkader dat afkomstig is van de Varieties of Capitalism-theorie, wordt er gekeken hoe het Chinese kapitalistische systeem/model getypeerd kan worden binnen het kader van het comparatief kapitalisme debat. Teneinde dit centrale vraagstuk te beantwoorden, worden er vier institutionele domeinen onderzocht die, door hun rol in de organisatie en distributie van de productiefactoren binnen een economie, de kern vormen van een kapitalistisch systeem. Deze domeinen zijn: 1) de staat; 2) het financiële systeem; 3) bedrijfsbestuur en onderlinge bedrijfsrelaties en; 4) het arbeidsmarktregime. Uit de analyse van deze domeinen vloeit tevens het vaststellen van vormen van institutionele complementariteit en institutionele comparatieve voordelen voort. Daarnaast wordt er in dit onderzoek uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan de sociaaleconomische ontwikkeling van China, het Chinese proces van handelsliberalisering en de invloed van cultuur op institutionele ontwikkeling. De belangrijkste bevinding van dit onderzoek is dat China zich in de periode 1960-2010 heeft ontwikkeld tot een State-Coordinated Market Economy (SCME). In deze kapitalistische variant is 'non-market' coördinatie in handen van een actieve, sturende en autoritaire staat en wordt politieke dominantie gekoppeld aan gecoördineerde economische ontwikkeling. De specifieke rol van de staat binnen de Chinese economie maakt tevens dat het benoemen van vormen van institutionele complementariteit alleen, niet voldoende is om de werking van het Chinese kapitalisme te duiden. Daarom zijn in dit onderzoek de concepten van (opzettelijke) economische institutionele tegenstrijdigheid en politieke institutionele complementariteit geïntroduceerd.Show less

The first aim of the thesis is to examine the migration streams from Albania to Italy, focusing on the years 1991 and 1997, and from Libya to Italy in 2005/6 and 2008/10. The purpose is to understand how Italy reacted to the various cases and why the strategies implemented by the various governments at diverse moments of history were so different. The second, but definitely no less important objective of this thesis, is to test whether or not the gap hypothesis could be applied to Italy’s policies towards boat migrants. By doing so, this thesis could shed new light on whether there was a possible gap in the outcome of the policies implemented during the various years by Italy due to European influence. The hypothesis is that there could be a gap caused by the increasingly more powerful EU and European Court of Human Rights of Strasbourg in the field of migration policy implementation, a policy field historically strongly bonded with state sovereignty.Show less
