Als buitenstaander moest hij orde op zaken stellen om de losgeslagen corruptie onder het WIC-personeel de kop in te drukken. Nog geen jaar later was hij dood en begraven. Zijn zware taken, de enorme tegenstand waar hij mee te maken kreeg en het ongezonde klimaat hadden hem de das omgedaan. De mislukte missie van Abraham Houtman geeft een inkijkje in de dagelijkse gang van zaken in de forten van de WIC aan de Goudkust. De Heeren Tien hadden allerlei ideeën over goede bedrijfsvoering, maar de realiteit in Afrika was weerbarstiger dan de plannen van het hoogste bestuursorgaan van de compagnie. Aan de hand van het directeur-generaalschap van Abraham Houtman geeft deze scriptie een beeld van leven en werken van Europeanen in West-Afrika in de jaren '20 van de achttiende eeuw.Show less

This thesis consists of an effort to trace these past changes in representations of native peoples from the first museums to modern times, taking the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde in Leiden as a case study. This case study turns out to be an illustrative example of how these changes occurred in ethnographic museums as results of the changes in the political and academic climate at the time, as well as the changing awareness indigenous peoples had of their own culture. The struggle for supremacy between these two great powers in the Mediterranean, which lasted from the middle of the seventh century to the twelfth, vividly appears in the primary sources, Arabic as well as Byzantine, and it can be gleaned with sufficient clarity in spite of numerous lacunae. Nevertheless, information about the cultural relations between these two powers of the time is sparse and incoherent in all sources and the task of modern scholars to trace them is confronted with great difficulties. An attempt has been made in the present work to take a panoramic view of various aspects of the Arab-Byzantine cultural relations in literature, art and naval technology, hoping to demonstrate that in spite of the continuous rivalry between Byzantium and the Arabs, an ongoing; undercurrent cultural communication existed between them.Show less

Happisburgh Site 1 is a Palaeolithic site where flint artefacts made by an unknown species of hominin are present. A general introduction is given to Happisburgh Site 1, with an overview presented on its flora, fauna and archaeology. The aim of the plant macrofossil investigation was to reconstruct the local vegetation at the time of deposition. The taxa found point to deposition during a temperate stage of an interglacial. The palaeoenvironment can be characterised as a freshwater fluvio-lacustrine channel. Beside this channel lay open muddy areas and reed-marshes. Woodland composed of coniferous and deciduous trees was present in the vicinity. The water in the fluvial channel was probably shallow, calcareous, mesotrophic and slow running. The channel possibly became deeper over time, indicated by the higher representation of marsh and waterside plant species in deeper samples, and higher representation of aquatic plant species in shallower samples. The fluvial channel at Happisburgh Site 1 was probably a cut-off channel, only accessed by the main channel during high-energy events. Some reworking of the sediments is indicated by the presence of a pre-Pleistocene megaspore. This study gives evidence about the habitat that hominins occupied at Happisburgh Site 1.Show less

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to answer the research question; What is the discourse on Aztec human sacrifices from the Late Post classic period in the Valley of Mexico and does it coincide...Show moreThe goal of this bachelor thesis is to answer the research question; What is the discourse on Aztec human sacrifices from the Late Post classic period in the Valley of Mexico and does it coincide with the contemporary Aztec museum exhibitions? Sixteenth century chronicles, mainly Sahagun’s, were used and more recent literature. Three museum exhibitions were chosen; two from London and one from New York. The research showed that in time the authors of the literature became more considerate and less prejudiced towards the Aztec culture and placed the human sacrifice in more proper context, even though all sources originated from the sixteenth and seventeenth century chronicles. The three recent museum exhibitions did not display many artefacts that pertain to the sacrificial ritual but reviews concerning the show were nevertheless negative, which is the result of several factors including literature, media, education, and methods of display of the Aztec museum exhibitions. This information led to the conclusion that the discourse on Aztec human sacrifices does not entirely coincide with the chosen recent museum exhibitions.Show less

In deze...Show moreIn de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw stuurde de Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie drie gezantschappen naar het Chinese hof te Peking in een poging om daar handelsbetrekkingen aan te knopen. In deze scriptie worden de eerste twee van die gezantschappen naast elkaar gelegd. Ook wordt er gekeken naar pogingen van andere Europese landen, in die periode, om via het Keizerlijk hof toegang tot de Chinese markt te krijgen. Er worden twee vragen gesteld;allereerst is de vraag welke tactiek de Nederlanders in China volgden. Kort door de bocht kan gesteld worden dat de VOC twee werkwijzen had in Azië. Aan de ene kant was er de agressieve aanpak die zij in de Indonesische archipel met succes gebruikten tegen staten daar en waarmee ze op veel plekken een handelsmonopolie wisten af te dwingen. Aan de andere kant was er de meegaande aanpak, in Japan, bijvoorbeeld, werden de bevelen van de Shōgun strikt opgevolgd, in de hoop niet te worden uitgezet. De vraag is dus wat zij in China deden. Vervolgens is de vraag of de twee gezantschappen van elkaar leerden en, zo ja, wat er dan aan hun aanpak veranderde.Show less

This study evaluates the interpretations and shows that these interpretations are not well supported. Additionally, possible alternative interpretations are proposed that show these figures might just as well be interpreted differently. It is discussed how the figures may be interpreted as rulers, ancestors or both. This discussion shows these alternative interpretations are for three of the four figures quite plausible. The outcome of this study is relevant in respect to the perception of the nature of Teotihuacan, since Teotihuacan art is generally considered as impersonal, with no depictions of individuals.Show less

Kinderen met een kindpsychiatrische ontwikkelingsstoornis zoals een autisme spectrum stoornis (ASS) of een aandachtstekortstoornis (ADHD) kunnen als gevolg van de stoornis leerproblemen ervaren....Show moreKinderen met een kindpsychiatrische ontwikkelingsstoornis zoals een autisme spectrum stoornis (ASS) of een aandachtstekortstoornis (ADHD) kunnen als gevolg van de stoornis leerproblemen ervaren. Het leren wordt vaak bemoeilijkt door een slechte concentratie, hyperactiviteit of rigiditeit in het denken. Dit onderzoek beoogt een bijdrage te leveren aan het inzicht op dit gebied door na te gaan in welke mate kinderen en jeugdigen met een kindpsychiatrische ontwikkelingsstoornis als ASS en/of ADHD, te kampen hebben met leerproblemen op het gebied van taal en rekenen, en in hoeverre deze leerproblematiek samenhangt met algemene leervoorwaarden zoals concentratie en werkhouding, alsmede met niet-stoornis specifieke gedragsproblematiek. Voor dit onderzoek is gebruik gemaakt van twee vragenlijsten, de Sociaal Emotionele Vragenlijst en de vragenlijst Onderzoek Adaptieve Vaardigheden Jeugdigen. Daarnaast werden demografische gegevens en informatie over de leerprestatie verzameld. Voor 445 kinderen en jeugdigen, variërend in de leeftijdsgroep van 4 tot en met 18 jaar, werden de vragen via het internet beantwoord door de ouders. De verwachting dat kinderen en jeugdigen met ASS en/of ADHD grotere taal- en/of rekenachterstanden hebben, wordt gedeeltelijk bevestigd. Verder blijkt de factor “concentratieproblemen” de belangrijkste statistische verklaring te geven voor de aanwezigheid van leerachterstanden bij kinderen met ADHD. Bij ASS vallen de taal- en/of rekenproblemen niet te verklaren uit de factoren “werkhoudingsproblemen” en “niet-stoornis specifiek probleemgedrag”, en slechts in lichte mate door de factor “concentratieproblemen”. In dit onderzoek biedt het hebben van de diagnose ASS de belangrijkste verklaring voor de aanwezigheid van de leerachterstanden.Show less

It is full of metaphors and complicated phases, in most cases possible to use and understand only by insiders. Moreover, the relevant context, usually of ritual performance has to be provided in order for the incantations to be effective. This paper analysis the context and metaphors in the religious language used by the ritual specialists in 17th century Mesoamerica based on the Treatise by Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón. The complexity of the metaphors used in the spells allows only for one group to be examined. Therefore, the metaphors recognised as calendrical names are examined through systematic analysis. Furthermore, the comparison with the day signs, plates 9-13 of the Borgia Codex, is made in order to investigate the extend of parallel meaning. As a result, the analysis enhances better understanding of the ritual speech-nahuallatolli as well as religious world view of the 17th century Mesoamerican people.Show less

Er zijn 73 dossiers van pleegkinderen uit Midden-Brabant geanalyseerd. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat kinderen op lichamelijk, motorisch, sociaal en emotioneel gebied en op het gebied van taal in ontwikkeling vooruit gaan tussen het moment van uithuisplaatsing en in 2010. Wanneer er gekeken wordt naar de verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes is alleen op sociaal gebied het verschil significant gebleken. Ook tussen kinderen geplaatst in een netwerkpleeggezin of kinderen geplaatst in een bestandspleeggezin is het verschil op sociaal gebied significant gebleken. Verder is tussen kinderen van 0 tot en met 11 jaar en kinderen van 12 tot en met 18 jaar ook op sociaal gebied het verschil significant gebleken. Het aantal jaren dat het pleegkind uit huis is geplaatst bleek geen rol te spelen in de ontwikkeling van het pleegkind.Show less

In order to create a picture of exchange and surplus production of animals and animal products in the Early Medieval period, the animal remains from the Merovingian settlement of Oegstgeest were analysed to determine whether exchange and surplus production took place at this settlement. A theoretical framework was set up in order to determine how exchange and surplus production can be recognised in the archaeozoological record. A number of aspects were deemed important in establishing whether exchange and surplus production took place in the past, including age and sex distributions, metrical- and non-metrical variation, skeletal element abundance and also stable isotope and aDNA analysis. Several of these aspects of the Oegstgeest faunal assemblage were researched. Results show that there was no large scale exchange and surplus production of animals and animal products at Oegstgeest. Results do, however, indicate that pork, beef and sea fish may have been brought into the settlement from elsewhere.Show less

Met dit onderzoek is getracht hier...Show moreBinnen migratiegeschiedenis is veel aandacht voor verschillende groepen migranten maar tot op heden zijn expats als groep migranten onderbelicht gebleven. Met dit onderzoek is getracht hier verandering in te brengen. Binnen wetenschappelijke-, politieke- en maatschappelijke discussies over migratie en migranten, is 'integratie' een belangrijk thema, zo ook in deze scriptie. De vraag die centraal staat is: in hoeverre integreerden Shell expats en hun gezinsleden in de Indonesische samenleving tussen 1945 en 1965? Diverse factoren spelen een rol in het integratieproces van migranten, het gaat om de wisselwerking tussen migrant en samenleving. Echter, bij expats speelt ook de werkgever nog een rol. In dit onderzoek is daarom een reconstructie gemaakt van de beleidslijnen en het personeelsbeleid van Shell uit 1945-1965 en een analyse over welke effecten het Shell beleid had op het integratieproces en de daadwerkelijke integratie van het Shell gezin. Daarnaast is aandacht besteed aan de politieke-, economische- maatschappelijke- en sociale omstandigheden in Indonesië in de onderzoeksperiode waarbinnen de verhoudingen tussen Nederland en Indonesië (dekolonisatieproces) en tussen Indonesië (Nederland) en Shell worden uitgelicht en wat die verhoudingen hebben betekend voor de integratie van het Shell gezin in de Indonesische samenleving. Het leven binnen de Shell-gemeenschap op diverse (buiten)posten in Indonesië is aan de hand van zelf afgenomen interviews met Shell expats, echtgenotes en kinderen, gereconstrueerd. De mate van integratie binnen en buiten de gemeenschap is geanalyseerd en tevens vergeleken met dat van Indiëgangers en kolonialen in de drie eeuwen ervoor in de voormalige kolonie Nederlands-Indië. Ook is er aandacht besteed aan de integratie van het Shell gezin bij hun 'terugkeer' naar Nederland. Het gehele onderzoek over in hoeverre Shell expats en het gezin integreerden in de Indonesische samenleving (1945-1965) en de conclusie(s) staan in de 'full-text'. Het onderzoek is gebaseerd op een literatuurstudie, met daarbij interviews met oud-Shell expats, echtgenotes en kinderen en door hun en anderen voor dit onderzoek ter beschikking gestelde privé documenten.Show less

Whereas this production sequence had been linked through its procedures and knowledge to several constructs of modern cognitive sophistication for anatomically modern humans, this has not been the case for Neandertals. This study compares adhesive production processes for AMH from Sibudu Cave, South-Africa (Wadley 2010), to those of Neandertals at the palaeolithic German sites of Konigsaue (Koller, Baumer and Mania 2002) and Inden-Altdorf (Pawlik and Thiseen 2011). Results show that the production sequences for the different contexts share many similarities, yet cognitive inferences made for the both contexts lack archaeological as well as cognitive validity. An alternative explanation is proposed in the form of Wynn and Coolidge's (2007b) theory of expertise through apprenticeship and learningShow less
