It...Show moreThis study compares the role played by Dutch and American engineers in the colonial governments of the Netherlands Indies and the American-controlled Philippines in the 1900-1920 timeframe. It contends that these colonial engineers extensively influenced the practical implementation of the civilizing missions of that were formulated in the United States and the Netherlands around 1900. Through the use of a sustained comparison between the activities of the engineers in these two Western countries and their tropical colonies the unique aspects of the American policy of “benevolent assimilation” and the Dutch “ethical policy” will be drawn into focus. This study makes use of the technocracy heuristic to analyze the behavior and ambitions of the engineers. Technocracy in this case refers to rule by experts, a goal that many members of the engineering profession that had emerged in both countries in the 1890s strove for. Such a political system could not be implemented in the Dutch and American metropoles, but in the colonies the engineers faced fewer obstacles to their political agenda. The technocratic ambitions of the engineers are reconstructed here by analyzing the rhetoric they used and the discourses they drew upon in their journals. In the first part of this study the emergence of the engineering profession in the Netherlands Indies and the United States is compared. The rhetoric of the engineers on either side of the Atlantic evinces important similarities, as does the receptiveness of politicians and public to their ideas. The new mode of imperialism and the civilizing missions that either country articulated concurrently also bear close resemblance. A series of vignettes in the second part of this study describing the practices and ideology of the colonial engineers working in the Netherlands Indies and the Philippines reveals how the meanings of the technologies they used were socially constructed. They show that the Americans possessed a unique willingness to have the Filipinos participate in their developmental strategy, whereas the Dutch did not cross the ethnographic separation from the Indonesians. This finding to an extent confirms the “exceptionalism” of American empire in this period.Show less

Els Langenfeld, woonachtig op Curaçao, publiceert al vele jaren historische verhalen in het Antilliaans Dagblad. Gert Oostindie zegt over haar artikelen dat deze uitstekend gedocumenteerd zijn en gebaseerd op goed bronnenonderzoek. Momenteel werkt Langenfeld aan haar proefschrift met als onderwerp de slaven van Curaçao in de negentiende eeuw. Zij had onderzoek gedaan naar Regina Jesurun, ex-slavin, vrijgekocht door haar moeder in 1782 , zelf licht van kleur, die samenwoonde met een joodse koopman, Isaac Abinun de Lima. Ondanks haar sociale status was Regina zakelijk succesvol. Onduidelijk is of haar onwettige relatie met een jood hierin een obstakel vormde of juist een voordeel was. Bij haar dood liet zij veel onroerend goed en slaven achter, terwijl haar partner Isaac, beduidend minder achterliet en waarschijnlijk zelfs schulden had. Tijdens het onderzoek van Langenfeld viel haar op dat er in de jaren 30 – 40 in de negentiende eeuw veel gevallen waren waarbij nazaten afzagen van de erfenis vanwege de onzekere staat van de boedel. Ook de kinderen van Isaac zagen af van de erfenis. Via haar onderzoek naar Regina kwam Langenfeld op het pad van Genereux, hun jongste zoon, die ook een geslaagd zakenman werd. In het Antilliaans Dagblad gaat Els Langenfeld de discussie aan met Alex Rosaria, partijleider van PAIS, die in zijn functie van voorzitter van de Stichting Dr. Mr. M.F. Da Costa Gomez, had voorgesteld om de J.H.J. Hamelbergweg te veranderen in Genereux Jacob Richard de Lima. Hetgeen Rosaria overigens ontkent in zijn ingezonden stuk: hij zou nimmer hebben gesproken over het veranderen van een naambord, maar is wel van mening dat op Curaçao mensen als Genereux meer ‘in het zonnetje’ gezet moeten gaan worden. Volgens hem was Genereux het eerste lid van de Koloniale Raad die protesteerde tegen het feit dat er op Curaçao niet gestemd mocht worden. Dat er een weg werd vernoemd naar Hamelberg terwijl hij het kiesrecht alleen aan de protestanten gunde en er niets naar Genereux is vernoemd, acht hij niet terecht. De Stichting Dr. Mr. M.F. Da Costa Gomez zal al het nodige doen om deze grote man te eren. Langenfeld is er van overtuigd dat Genereux de lof die hem wordt toegewuifd door Rosaria, vanwege zijn vermeende voortrekkersrol in de emancipatie van het Curaçaose volk, niet toekomt. Genereux zou volgens haar alleen tot doel hebben gehad de groep kleurlingen meer te emanciperen. Aangezien er nauwelijks bronnenonderzoek heeft plaatsgevonden naar Genereux de Lima acht zij dan ook vooralsnog niet bewezen dat hij een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld in de emancipatie van de ‘yúnan di Kòrsou’. Ik begrijp inmiddels dat Genereux qua karakter niet bepaald sympathie oproept. Els Langenfeld zegt dat hij geen gemakkelijke man moet zijn geweest, hij had een moeilijk karakter en hij kwam diverse malen in conflict met anderen en Hubert Cabaña schrijft dat Genereux bekend stond als een eerzuchtig persoon met een opvliegend karakter. Echter zijn personage is nooit geplaatst binnen de context van zijn tijd. Met de ogen van nu is het onmogelijk te oordelen over het gedrag van toen, zonder het bestuderen van de samenleving van toen. Of Genereux de Lima inderdaad de eerste kleurling was binnen de Koloniale Raad en of hij een strijder was voor de emancipatie van de totale Curaçaose bevolking is nauwelijks onderzocht. De stellingen daarover worden niet gestaafd met verwijzingen naar primair bronnenonderzoek. Doelstelling van deze scriptie zal dan ook zijn te onderzoeken of : a. Genereux J.R. de Lima als eerste kleurling zitting had in de Koloniale Raad; b. Hij vocht voor algemeen kiesrecht en voor emancipatie van de ‘yúnan di Kòrsou’.Show less

Welke weg...Show moreIn deze thesis wordt nagegaan hoe het informatiesysteem van de VOC werkte. Hoe kwam de compagnie aan haar informatie, hoe werd deze geregistreerd, en door wie werd deze geregistreerd? Welke weg legden de documenten binnen het informatienetwerk van de compagnie af? Door de Amerikaanse antropologe Ann Stoler wordt verondersteld dat een archief een zekere ‘pulse’ heeft, een polsslag waarmee documenten door een organisatie in verschillende snelheden en hoeveelheden werd uitgewisseld. In dit onderzoek wordt gekeken welke onderwerpen in de jaren 1737-1750 in de administratie van de VOC het meest van belang waren, en wordt onderzocht of er onderwerpen zijn waarover met een ‘verhoogde polsslag’ besluiten werden genomen, rapporten werden geproduceerd en correspondentie werd uitgewisseld. Ann Stoler introduceert ook het concept van het ‘archival event,’ gerelateerd aan deze verhoogde polsslag. In dit onderzoek wordt een methode gepresenteerd waarmee archival events mogelijk terug te vinden zijn in de archieven. De vraag of dit een werkbare methode oplevert, is een subvraag van dit onderzoek. De hoofdvraag van deze thesis is of er een ‘pulse’ waarneembaar is in de archieven van de VOC en of – door mogelijke ‘archival events’ op te sporen – het informatiesysteem en –netwerk van de VOC in kaart gebracht kan worden. Twee van de gevonden mogelijke archival events – de Chinezenmoord in Batavia (1740) en een administratieve crisis rond het buitenkantoor in Perzië (1737) – worden daartoe nader uitgediept. De thesis is gebaseerd op onderzoek in de archieven van de Heeren XVII (geborgen in het Nationaal Archief, Den Haag) en de Hoge Regering (Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia, Jakarta).Show less

A credit structure was set up that would link Dutch investors with their West Indian...Show moreA system of subprime plantation mortgages was created by the Dutch in the second half of the 18th century. A credit structure was set up that would link Dutch investors with their West Indian colonies, by providing plantation mortgages (called negotiaties) for those dreaming of becoming planters. Interest rates were high: attractive for investors, but all too cumbersome for the new plantation owners. Many planters, mostly producing coffee, could not repay their loans, leading to the demise of the system as many bankrupt planters returned home and investors lost their capital. That is the case in Suriname at least, because in the near-by colonies of Essequibo and Demerara the plantation economy had only just took-off and continued to expand. This thesis tries to explain that divergence, next to identifying the winners and losers in the system and testing several explanatory concepts in order to gain a better conceptual understanding of the negotiatie structure. Results are that winners and losers were different than previously thought: investors could still be winners, while the fund managers could easily be losers. Additionally, the negotiatie system should be termed a classic mania, that could persist only for a limited time because of the Ponzi aspects, visible in the need for continuous refinancing. Lastly, the plantation mortgage structure could be seen as a failed transition to modernity, one that tried to bridge the commercial and financial interest of the Dutch economy, but was too much rooted in mercantilist thought. This was less the case for Essequibo and Demerara, where an open, but partly illegal, connection with the rest of the Atlantic was more important than the obligatory relationship with the metropolis. Next to legal supplies, illegal trade occurred on a large scale and proved crucial for the development of the two colonies.Show less

The US, on the other hand, needs Canadian cooperation in issues like energy and continental security, where the Arctic plays an important role. This thesis seeks to analyze this relationship on the issues of territorial sovereignty, security, energy and environment and regional governance. For these topics, the importance of the end of the Cold War is assessed. The emerging image is one of deep, if unequal mutual interdependence, where neither country has clear superior force over the other.Show less

Free market economists have pointed to this episode in American history as...Show moreThis thesis has conducted an analysis of economic policy by the Harding administration during the 1920-1921 depression. Free market economists have pointed to this episode in American history as proof of the beneficial effects of laissez-faire fiscal and monetary policy during economic crises. This thesis has examined whether federal fiscal and monetary policy was in fact laissez-faire and what impact this had on economic recovery. First of all, trade policy was protectionist, though the Emergency Tariff was found to be too insignificant to impact the conclusions of this study. Taxation policy was decidedly laissez-faire as there were significant reductions in income-tax rates, the end of the Excess Profits tax and multiple smaller regressive taxes were lowered or scrapped. This thesis has found that taxation measures positively impacted economic recovery indirectly through the phenomenon of ‘regime certainty’. Furthermore, federal government spending was reduced substantially without negatively impacting economic growth. Government policy on wages, prices and unemployment was decidedly non-interventionist, resulting in substantially lower wages and prices. Finally, the Federal Reserve refrained from implementing any significant monetary stimulus, both through discount rate lowering or open market operations and the money supply decreased strongly throughout the crisis and economic recovery.Show less

Vissers vormden een substantieel deel van de Middelharnisse bevolking, bovendien huisde het dorp ook nog een heel aantal ventjagers, handelaren die de vis overkochten van de vissers en deze met name naar Brabantse steden als Antwerpen en Breda vervoerden. Dit gold dan vooral voor de kabeljauw die de Middelharnisse vissers in de wintermaanden vingen, in de zomermaanden viste men op tarbot, welke door de vissers in Engeland verkocht werd. De Middelharnisse vissers waren beoefenaars van de beugvisserij en gebruikten hierbij als aas prikken, die in het ‘prikgat’ in het dorp gekweekt werden. Het dorp had ook een eigen visafslag die een belangrijke positie innam omdat alle vishandel binnen het Gat van Goeree via deze afslag diende te verlopen. De conclusie van deze studie is dat het belang van de visserij voor het dorp zeer groot was. Zo wordt met grote en kostbare werkzaamheden de haven van Middelharnis bevaarbaar gehouden, en doet het dorpsbestuur van Middelharnis grote inspanningen om bedreigingen van de vishandel op de Zuidelijke Nederlanden en Engeland het hoofd te bieden. Binnen het dorpsbestuur speelt de familie Kolff een speciale rol. Enerzijds heeft de familie zelf belangen in de visserij en anderzijds heeft men invloedrijke kennissen die worden ingeschakeld om de belangen van de Middelharnisse visserij te beschermen. This study aims to answer the question which importance the fisheries held to the town of Middelharnis during the eighteenth century. A substantial part of the population of the town were fishermen. Besides them the town housed a number of so called ‘ventjagers’, traders who bought fish from the fishermen and transported it to cities in Brabant, like Antwerp and Breda. This was especially the case with cod, which the fishermen caught during the winter. In summer they fished for turbot, which the fishermen themselves sold in England. The fishermen of Middelharnis were practitioners of longlinefishing, they used lampreys for bait. The lampreys were grown in a breeding pond in the town. The town also had its own fish auction, which had an important position because all fish trade within the Goeree Gat was supposed to run through this auction. The conclusion of this study is that the fisheries were of big importance to the town. Large and valuable works were undertaken to keep the harbor of the town sailable. The town’s governance also took great efforts to encounter the threats to the fish trade on the Southern Netherlands and England. Within the town’s governance the Kolff family played a special role. On the one hand the family itself had interests in the fisheries, on the other hand they had influential acquaintances who they used to protect the interests of the fisheries of Middelharnis.Show less

In deze scriptie wordt de verdediging van de Romeinse oostgrens ten tijde van het Principaat en de Parthen (27 v.C.-224 n.C.) onder de loep genomen, waarvoor gekeken wordt naar de keizerlijke strategieën en het functioneren van het Romeinse leger in het Romeinse oosten, om uiteindelijk een bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan het grand strategy-debat. Daaruit blijkt dat vanaf Augustus een zeker beleid te zien is, dat zich uitte in het opschuiven van de Romeinse oostgrens richting de Eufraat. Vanaf het moment dat er een redelijke rechte oostgrens gecreëerd was, die deels langs de Eufraat liep, werd deze gehandhaafd. Toen de Parthen echter agressiever werden creëerden Marcus Aurelius en Septimius Severus een Romeins bolwerk in Mesopotamië, waardoor de Romeinen een sterke strategische positie verkregen. Het Romeinse leger bleek dankzij de hulp- en bondgenotentroepen die tot zijn beschikking stonden en de aanpassingen aan de in het oosten aanwezige vijanden goed te kunnen functioneren. Aan de hand van deze conclusies kan men wel degelijk stellen dat de Romeinse keizers een grand strategy hadden. From the moment that Luttwak’s book The grand strategy of the Roman Empire was published in 1976 there has been an ongoing historical debate, in which the central question is whether Roman emperors did or did not follow a grand strategy. In this thesis the defence of the Roman eastern border in the time of the Principate and the Parthians (27 BC-224 AD) has been examined, so that in the end a position can be taken in the grand strategy-debate. To attain this end this study has been examining the imperial strategies and how the Roman army functioned in the east. The results are that from Augustus on a certain policy can be deduced: the Roman border was slowly extended to the Euphrates. From the moment that the border ran a relatively straight course from north to south, partly running along the Euphrates, it was kept that way. That changed when the Parthians got more aggressive; Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus created a Roman bulwark in Mesopotamia, which gave the Romans a strong strategic position. The Roman army was very efficient thanks to the many auxiliary and allied troops in it and the adaptations to its enemies. Looking at these conclusions it can be concluded that the Roman emperors did have a grand strategy.Show less

They were seamen employed by Dutch shipping companies and came originally from Guangdong province...Show moreIt is exactly 100 years ago (1911) that hundreds of Chinese migrants set foot in the Netherlands. They were seamen employed by Dutch shipping companies and came originally from Guangdong province in China. The Chinese community has now grown into a highly diverse community of 100,000 people. It is highly diverse in terms of their place of birth, socio-economic status and immigration history. Among the Chinese immigrants originating from the New Territories in Hong Kong who re-migrated from Britain to the Netherlands in the 1950s, there was a significant lineage, i.e. the Man lineage. Currently, this lineage in the Netherlands is made up of approximately 2000 – 2500 members and in Britain over 4000 members who share the same surname ‘Man’. This thesis has sought to find out what were the causes of migration that contributed to the exodus of the Man lineage to Europe from two particular villages – namely San Tin and Chau Tau – in the New Territories in Hong Kong. The thesis has conducted a comprehensive analysis that consists of a three-level examination, namely that of the macro, meso and micro levels. As a matter of fact, the rationale behind such decisions demonstrates the interaction between structure and agency, culminating in chain migration. In other words, factors such as colonialism, the economic situation, national immigration policies and established social networks all played a role in the decision-making process, making transnational migration possible. It has also demonstrated that family structure has a strong correlation with the pattern of migration. This thesis has also identified certain major changes in relation to the Man lineage in Europe as a result of migration. First of all, there has been an upward social mobility. Second, there has been a conversion in consciousness, notably, from a diasporic consciousness to a transcultural consciousness. Finally, there has been a change in social relationship among the second and the third generation Man lineage members since, according to the survey, they do not have close ties with their their agnates established in Europe and in the New Territories or the villages of their ancestors.Show less
