The Yasuní-ITT Initiative was introduced under the Correa government as an environmental project that proposed to discontinue oil extraction in part of the Yasuní National Park in Ecuador, in turn for financial compensation from the international community. As such, it had the opportunity to set an example of global collaboration in conservation by proposing to share the costs and benefits of conservation internationally. While attempting to find an explanation for the Initiative’s failure, this paper taps into the highly topical dilemma between ecologism and economism as faced by the Ecuadorian government.Show less

This has translated over time into the incorporation of various public policies and the creation of institutions that seek to make women's issues more visible and promote gender equality. Regarding Chilean female employability, there is still a wide gap between men and women, with Chile being one of the countries with the lowest female labor participation in the Latin American region. Most studies have focused on understanding this topic, mainly from the perspective of analyzing human capital and the characteristics of the labor market. However, in the last decades, theoretical work began to be produced that considered the cultural factor of this phenomenon. Thus, issues related to the type of society in which they live are considered relevant, contributing to the understanding of the employability patterns of women, especially those who are mothers. Where it is considered that the country context is rooted in traditional culture and has not yet managed to depose current social inequalities. Therefore, motherhood plays an important role when making decisions regarding female employability.Show less

A partir das tomadas de decisão da Secretaria de Negócios Estrangeiros (atual Ministério das Relações Exteriores), é possível perceber as origens do que ficou denominado no estudo da Política Externa Brasileira (PEB) como "mito da estabilidade". Este conceito é abordado por um grupo restrito de teóricos e o presente trabalho visa dar mais ênfase ao estudo deste, inserido no contexto do Brasil Império. Pretende-se também, utilizar as ferramentas teóricas das Relações Internacionais para incluir o século XIX brasileiro no estudo da Análise de Política Externa (APE) do Brasil. Há escassos estudos a respeito da atuação internacional brasileira neste período (apenas capítulos introdutórios ou sub-seções em determinados livros). Durante los últimos años se ha visto como un fenómeno de consumo de ayahuasca fuera del ámbito indígena ha tomado gran fuerza. Actualmente es muy común encontrar en ciudades como Bogotá ceremonias llamadas como “tomas de yajé” donde se debe pagar una cifra estipulada de dinero para poder acceder a un ritual chamánico donde se consume ayahuasca. La oferta desmedida de ceremonias de yajé y el consumo de tradiciones indígenas que incluyen una transacción monetaria suponen una resignificación del consumo de Ayahuasca por parte de población no indígena que gira alrededor de la exotización y comodificación de las culturas étnicas.Show less

The given thesis investigates this issue when looking at the impact of salsa dancing on the perceptions about gender, the body, and sexuality of women in Puebla, Mexico. This study is based on anthropological theories about dance and its relation to aspects of gender, like the performance of femininity in salsa dancing, and on a period of qualitative fieldwork which the author of this thesis has conducted in Puebla, Mexico in order to fully understand the perceptions of salsa dancing women from an emic-perspective. All in all, this thesis provides an inside into the life of women in Mexico, who have suffered from gender inequality their whole life’s and who are trying to resist these dominant structures.Show less
Esta tesis explora la relación entre el proceso de gentrificación de la Colonia Roma en la Ciudad de México y la oferta gastronómica de la zona, con la finalidad de determinar los mecanismos que...Show moreEsta tesis explora la relación entre el proceso de gentrificación de la Colonia Roma en la Ciudad de México y la oferta gastronómica de la zona, con la finalidad de determinar los mecanismos que operan en dicha relación y establecer patrones que permitan entender los valores sociales, culturales y económicos que entran en juego. Para lograrlo, se hizo una investigación bibliográfica en cuanto a los fenómenos de gentrificación en distintos lugares del mundo, así como de la oferta gastronómica como agente y síntoma de la gentrificación. Dicha investigación se complementó con un trabajo de campo en la Colonia Roma, en el que se observaron tendencias en la gastronomía, en el mercado inmobiliario y en los cambios de patrones culturales y sociales de la zona. Como resultado, se determinó que existe una relación simbiótica entre la oferta gastronómica y los procesos de gentrificación, influida por factores como la globalización, las políticas urbanísticas neoliberales, la mala planificación urbana, la corrupción, la especulación financiera e inmobiliaria y hasta el racismo. La oferta gastronómica funciona como un ariete que permite, además, mostrar una cara amable del proceso, mientras oculta procesos injustos y nefastas consecuencias. A futuro se recomienda profundizar el estudio de esta relación, poniendo especial énfasis en las características fundamentales del fenómeno en el contexto latinoamericano. This thesis explores the relationship between the gentrification process of Colonia Roma in Mexico City and the gastronomic offer, to determine the mechanisms that operate in said relationship and establish patterns that allow learning the social and cultural values, as well as the economic factors that come into play. Besides the bibliographic investigation on gentrification phenomena in different parts of the world, and the gastronomic offer as an agent and symptom of gentrification, this research was complemented by a field research in Colonia Roma, where trends were observed in gastronomy, the real estate market, and the changes of cultural and social patterns in the area. As a result, it was determined that there exists a symbiotic relationship between the gastronomic offer and the gentrification processes, influenced by factors such as globalization, neoliberal urban policies, poor urban planning, corruption, financial and real estate speculation and even racism. The gentrified food offer allows showing a kind face of the process while hiding unfair methods and dire consequences. For future research, it is recommended to deepen the study of this relationship, with special emphasis on the fundamental characteristics of the phenomenon in the Latin American context.Show less

Through the analysis of the character Waldirene, protagonist of the comic strips "Waldirene A AM", published in the newspaper "O Estado" from Santa Catarina during the years of 1986 to 1989, this research seeks to answer which stereotypes are triggered by cartoonist Sérgio Bonson in the construction of the maid Wadirene and consequently what stereotypes have to say about the society that consumed them. In this sense, the humor triggered by the comic strips seeks to reveal something about the reading public and indicate the perspective of the newspaper as an instrument of the ruling class.Show less

La igualdad de género sigue siendo un reto para el mundo, especialmente en aquellas regiones donde las prácticas socio-culturales machistas intersecan con la pobreza y la discriminación racial...Show moreLa igualdad de género sigue siendo un reto para el mundo, especialmente en aquellas regiones donde las prácticas socio-culturales machistas intersecan con la pobreza y la discriminación racial institucionalizada. En este articulo quiero señalar la relación directa y positiva entre cooperativismo bottom-up femenino y empoderamiento de las mujeres. Voy a tomar como estudio de caso la cooperativa Mujeres Pescadoras del Manglar de la costa de Oaxaca en México. Esta cooperativa constituye un ejemplo interesante donde emergen varias temáticas de México contemporáneo con dinámicas cuyas orígenes remontan hasta la conquista y la colonia. El contexto en que se desarrolla la cooperativa es un pueblado cuya población está compuesta por indígenas (chatinos y mixtecos) y afrodescendientes, lo cual es un factor importante no solo desde un punto de vista cultural, sino histórico y social también. De hecho, desde la conquista los indígenas y los africanos traídos desde Africa para el comercio de esclavos y sus descendientes, han sido y son objeto de opresión y discriminación por parte de las élites y de las instituciones, lo que ha comportado su actual posición marginalizada en la sociedad con las tasas de educación, empleo y salud más bajas del paìs. Asimismo, la cooperativa Mujeres Pescadoras del Manglar es un ejemplo del fenómeno nacional de incremento de empleo femenino en el sector pesquero, lo cual es en aumento gracias al creciente número de cooperativas femeninas a través de las cuales las mujeres pueden acceder al mercado laboral, feminizar nuevos espacios y lograr un pleno empoderamiento frente a ellas mismas, sus familias y a la sociedad en que viven. La creación de espacios seguros y feminizados donde las mujeres pueden expresarse y convivir libremente es fundamental para la toma de consciencia de su posición en cuanto personas y para no pensarse únicamente como madres, esposas o hermanas de un hombre. Tomar consciencia de una misma es la primera pauta hacia el cambio y sobre todo para el empoderamiento individual y colectivo.Show less
