Looking into the difference of strategies held at the national and local level with their degrees of influence and impact of peoples’ daily life. This research focuses on the developed mechanism and framing for integration in France through three distinct governments under the presidency of Valérie Giscard d'Estaing and François Mitterrand. Through diving into parliamentary debates analysis, emerged different framing based on political perception of immigration, integration, racism, exclusion, hatred and policy strategies. While research carried at a local level focused more on social mobilisation and inclusivity to develop a frontal and pacific confrontation to hatred, racism and exclusion. To carry out this study, online and physical archival material documents were selected. The doors of ‘SOS Racisme’ were for the second time in their history open for research. Based on archival material, this study outlined that governance mechanism and different framing elevated at a national and local level of governmentality were different. It was found that due to a lack of understanding and physical exclusion of migrant population, a gap between communities was created. With the election of F. Mitterrand as President, new strategies for integration were develop and laid ground for social mobilisation to form. Hence, leading to a bottom-top approach and new means of understanding for a more fundamental perception of national wide diversity and integration strategies.Show less

It does this by comparing the dominant exclusion factors over time. We can see a shift from religious arguments to a transition period, wherein religious and racial arguments mix with one another to form truly racial justifications for black enslavement in the end. The thesis also compares British American and Iberian exclusion mechanisms to pinpoint the location of origin to British America and to explore the different forms of racial prejudice in both worlds.Show less

In the same vein, sub-Saharan migrants still harbour the desire to one day reach Europe, even though they are no longer endeavouring on a daily basis to cross the Strait of Gibraltar in order to reach Europe. As such, sub-Saharan migrants are no longer 'passively stuck', but rather have to be perceived as 'actively waiting'.Show less

Do they know they are perceived as the model for ethnic minority groups in this country? Do they agree with this comment? In this paper, I am going to explore the answer to the question: how does the second generation Dutch Chinese perceive themselves in relation to the shining example myth. My thesis statement is that misunderstood the meaning of ‘integration’, this discourse creates a problematic illusion of the Chinese immigrants as being a ‘shining model’ solely based on their public stereotypes and achievements in terms of socio-economic status. The myth contributes to the ignorance of their social exclusion and to the confusion encountered during the acculturation process. It rationalises establishing an assimilationist migration policy of omitting the issues of providing assistance with regards to developing their own ethnic culture while adapting to mainstream society. It alienates the second generation Chinese-Dutch as an ethnic minority group by unrecognising their demands for further integrating to both cultures since they are regarded as already ‘perfectly integrated’ by the public.Show less
