This thesis is about the modern polemics surrounding the parts of the Islamic tradition with supposed Jewish origins, also known as the “Isrāʾīliyyāt”. The term Isrāʾīliyyāt has been the subject of numerous religious-polemical works since the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Modernist Muslim commentators arguing for the ejection of this material to make way for a return to pristine Islam. Although such arguments against Isrāʾīliyyāt find considerable coverage in the academic literature, the dynamic exegetical scene in Turkey is often neglected. Highlighting the discussions in Turkey, this research aims to bring out the contemporary debates about Isrāʾīliyyāt therein with a study of the ‘new media’, a platform that is widely used by preachers from different ideological camps. This thesis seeks to situate the Turkish case within the larger Middle Eastern context of Modernist Islam by discovering the connections between exegetes from different localities and eras, aiming to locate the intellectual influences of the figures that are studied.Show less

In order to do so, a structuralist approach to International Relations and nationalism have been combined with a domestic approach to foreign-policymaking. The case study of the Khaleej Times newspaper explores, through a qualitative content analysis, how nation-building and nationalism have been flagged (sign-posted) in news items in the context of the Yemen war. The results show that while the UAE is heavily invested in its military intervention abroad, the news-making is focused on ‘softer’ subjects such as humanitarian aid. On the other hand, the approach of accounting for structural elements proves to be insightful. In a globalised, multipolar world, small states with enough resources can project power ‘above their leagues.’ To sum up, nation-building is certainly a continued effort in the UAE. The UAE relies heavily on its image to fulfil her geopolitical aims. What is apparent from the results of this study is that the UAE relies rather on soft power than “pure” hard power to achieve its foreign policy goals.Show less

This analysis can often be clouded by biases and falsehoods - within analysis of the Middle East this often comes in the form of Orientalism. This study shall demonstrate that Orientalism is extant within the academic field of strategic culture with regards to Iran, thus bringing into question the validity of this academia, and furthermore strategic culture as a concept.Show less

Show less

In this timeframe the government shifted the population policies from pro-natalist to anti-natalist in the late 1980’s and back to pro-natalist a decade ago. The fertility rate which was approximately 6.0 in 1976 rose to 7 in 1986 and then declined rapidly to less than 2.0 in 2005. The two periods in which the IRI employed pro-natalist policy and propaganda (1979-1989 and 2012-now), received only limited analysis in the academic literature. This paper examines the visual pro-natalist propaganda of the past decade and compares it with the propaganda of the formative period of IRI, by analysing and comparing the selected case-studies from each period. Using propaganda-analysis by Jowett and O’Donnell and visual semiotics as described in The SAGE handbook of visual research methods, this paper observes to what extent there is continuity and change in the depiction of families and what this reveals about the social, economic and political situation of IRI.Show less

The magazine Azeema focusses on women of colour who have a bilateral background and are most of the time from the Middle Eastern North Africa region (MENA-region). Azeema and a couple of other initiatives are precursors in the sense that they focus on a group of people who formerly did not see representation of themselves in the media landscape. Via interviews and online content a context description is set up which explains how the editors of the magazine found Azeema. Due to the lack of representation and the desire to present a more nuanced picture of women from the region chief editor Jameela Elfaki started the magazine.Based in London the five-headed team started writing articles and accepting guest writers for the magazine. By means of a qualitative content analysis underlying themes and patterns of data are drafted. Five returning categories are founded when analyzing the data of Azeema’s publications. Besides these categories Azeema’s visual material is also considered during this analysation. The researched showed how the five categories were all adding to a ‘new’ wave of transnationalism that come about by bottom-up organizations.Show less

This essay approaches the debate from a different angle by asking how the two notions relate to each other in propaganda posters centering around Khomeini and Atatürk. In combining propaganda analysis with semiotics and iconography, the essay finds a new approach to extract symbols of nationalism and religion that facilitates the comparison between the two different posters. From this analysis, it becomes clear that the relationship between nationalism and religion is more complex than the debate suggests.Show less

These events have been heavily discussed and debated not only in the West, but globally regarding the use of Islam in committing terrorism. Hence, different scholars have touched upon the concept of Salafism in relation to modern-day terrorism but did not bring enough attention to how it has multiple uses in politics. This research sheds light on the methods of two very distinct political actors which were able to create social cohesion, attract followers and maintain a collective identity within their societies. Therefore, this research investigates how both the Islamic State and Saudi Arabia have used Islam as part of their propaganda strategy online to achieve political outcomes.Show less

Show less

Show less
