Morality is a heterogeneously diverse set of codes and norms that derives from multiple sources, such as Confucian and Buddhism. Looking at Buddhism, this already started spreading towards China as early as the Han dynasty, and has over time gained a firm foothold in the Chinese culture and literature. This thesis will focus on the function of Buddhism in one of the fundamental works in the genre of the vernacular story: the Sanyan 三言,three collections of each forty stories written by the Ming dynasty writer Feng Menglong 馮夢龍. This thesis will research the function of one particular element connected to morality: karmic retribution. It will argue that because the Late Ming was a political unstable period in which many people were seeking moral guidance to create stability for themselves, Feng Menglong mostly used karmic retribution in a common recognizable setting for his readers to promote morality.Show less

Much like contemporary erotic works like the sixteenth century “Jin Ping Mei” and seventeenth century “The Embroidered Couch”, the theme of the erotic novel revolves around a libertine who fully indulges himself in sexual pleasures and is, through the intricacies of karmic retribution (which in the Chinese narrative is known as baoying), eventually punished for it. I will try to determine the influence of baoying on narrative structure and behavior adjustment of characters within Rou Putuan. On a structural level I will, drawing on works of van Dijk and Margolin, examine how to recognize occurrences of the unexpected disruption of coherence within the event structure of the narrative, intuitively called ‘coincidence’. Through the analysis of three key events, I will attempt to determine whether or not this occurrence of ‘coincidence’ can be made rational by supplying a retribution structure coordinating the story. The final purpose of this thesis is to determine how Li Yu’s evokes the retributive device of baoying on the narrative of Rou Putuan. My argument refutes the idea that the author uses retribution to convene any moral message, but that it’s merely the result of Li Yu’s interesting relationship with convention. I will lay bare this relationship by supplying a small biography and emphasizing the interrelation between his own aesthetic ideas and his intended audience.Show less

The paper examines first to what extent socialization theory can help to explain China's increasing role in the governance of the IFIs. Next is an analysis from different perspectives if there is evidence that China is 'challenging' the IFIs. The final section will illustrate that China is taking an alternative route to exerting its influence on the IFIs, and that there are other theses about engagement and interaction that current International Relations Theory is not capable of explaining. This analysis of the nature of China's influence on the governance of the international financial institutions aims to give us an insight into what kind of member of the international community China aspires to be.Show less

Etnische toeristen zijn op zoek naar de exotische ander. Dit geldt ook voor de Mosuo, uniek vanwege hun matrilineaire afstammingssyteem en het feit dat ze niet trouwen. Toeristen worden met dit beeld naar het Lugumeergebied gelokt. Ze brengen hun geld en hun verwachtingen mee, gebaseerd op de informatie die ze kennen uit verschillende media. Het geld, de verwachtingen en de cultuur van de Han- Chinezen hebben allemaal invloed in Luoshui en de Mosuo houden rekening met de verwachtingen van de toeristen. Since the characters involved are predominantly women, some claim that the concept of a supposed oppressive patriarchal system is the primary motivational factor for these suicides. In the current work I shall argue that this is in fact not entirely the case. To this end, I shall analyze the acts of suicide as described in the novel based on a three-way division: firstly I shall address the influence of family structure and the system of concubinage in the Qing-dynasty; subsequently shall follow a discussion of the proscribed morals of purity of the time; thirdly I shall discuss a selection of suicides through the framework of qing 'sentimentality.'Show less

Zo ontstond er onder de vrouwelijke consument een groeiende behoefte aan ideeën en tips over kleding en uiterlijke verzorging. Deze behoefte werd ingevuld door de komst van overwegend Westerse en later ook Aziatische modetijdschriften vanaf 1988 die de lokale modetijdschriften markt domineerden. De internationale tijdschriften brachten nieuwe beelden en ideeën over schoonheid met zich mee. Dankzij het groeiende aanbod aan internationale cosmetische producten werd het voor de Chinese consument mogelijk het Westerse uiterlijk na te streven. De ideeën over schoonheid en mode worden in de gemondialiseerde commerciële wereld bepaald door de keuzes van anderen. Hierbij spelen redacteuren en de inhoud van modetijdschriften in China een belangrijke rol. Werd er bij de introductie van vele internationale modetijdschriften rond de eeuwwisseling nog weinig rekening gehouden met de lokale context, zo is er de laatste jaren een trend te zien waarbij de inhoud juist wordt aangepast aan die context. Na 1978 lijkt er langzamer-hand een scheiding te zijn ontstaan tussen uiterlijke schoonheid (voornamelijk ingevuld door Westerse uiterlijke kenmerken) en de innerlijke, morele schoonheid (Chinese modellen). Het uiterlijke schoonheidsideaal is heel commercieel en wordt toegeschreven aan de culturele ‘ander’ (Westen), terwijl de innerlijke schoonheid en de daarbij horende culturele waarden blijven toegeschreven aan Chinese vrouwen.Show less

The various outcomes of these actions range from cooperation with the state to the recent separatist stances from Chinese Muslims towards their government. This thesis investigates the factors that influence the teaching of the ‘Islamic-Chinese’ identity, such as the development of state education for Muslims; Muslim private education; the influence of study abroad; the legal framework on religious education; the influences on employment prospects; and the influences of globalization. This thesis argues that both in response to and accommodated by the Chinese government’s utilitarian approach to Muslim Chinese, from the 1980s onwards the Muslim Chinese communities created a more “Muslim” identity in ways (unforeseen and) uncontrollable by the government.Show less

This study has proved the material cultural approach contributed to our understanding of the Chinese literati garden in Ming China as a site of economic and social importance. It has became clear the literati garden was more than just a place of aesthetic appreciation. As a plot of land the literati garden had economic value for the owner in terms of the production of edible or valuable resources such as fruits, rice and timber. The literati garden was an investment and a site of stored value. The study of the building process, materials and maintenance showed not only the extensiveness of the investments made by owner, but also the extensiveness of the garden building business. The stored value was also a way to store the family’s capital to secure the family’s future. The literati garden also showed to be important in the establishment of social relations, the display of ‘good’ taste to legitimize social status and ultimately the performance of culture in the pursuit of the social-cultural ideal of the literati. Commercialization, expansion of trade and fashion in the second half of the sixteenth century changed the existing social structure which led to social competition and redefined the literati garden from a site of connoisseurship to a site of luxury and wealth display. As a result the existing elite class tried to redefine their status as the true elite class by searching for new ways of distinction. The literati garden became a place of reclusion and the elite started to appreciate life as a hermit who longed for simplicity and frugality in life by growing his own vegetables and fruit in his garden which was a revival of faded Confucian thoughts within a society characterized by wealth display, luxury and social competition.Show less
