Beyond providing mere metaphoric expressions of Israeli and Palestinian rootedness, trees give material form to claims to the contested land of Israel/Palestine. Thus, the Israel/Palestine conflict is not merely a struggle over land, but also a struggle conducted and articulated through the land and through trees more specifically, as both Israelis and Palestinians invest memory in “their” trees, the pine tree and the olive tree respectively.Show less

In dat...Show moreIn deze masterthesis is onderzocht welke werkomstandigheden, mogelijkheden en beperkingen, er voor Chinese journalisten en buitenlandse correspondenten in China zijn veranderd sinds 2008. In dat jaar organiseerde China de Olympische Zomerspelen en stond daarmee in de internationale belangstelling. In de decennia voor de Spelen was een ontwikkeling gaande in het medialandschap. Zo waren buitenlandse partijen steeds vaker welkom om te investeren en te participeren in de Chinese media. Toch is er nog veel kritiek op de werkomstandigheden van buitenlandse correspondenten. Dit is deels te verklaren door een westerse bias en door interculturele verschillen. De bias ontstaat onder andere door een westerse angst voor China dat steeds machtiger wordt in de wereld. De interculturele verschillen gaan gepaard met het verschil in interpretatie van persvrijheid en de journalistieke taakopvatting. Nieuwe en actuele informatie over de journalistieke werkomstandigheden is niet alleen relevant voor China-experts. Ook de nieuwsconsument leert zo de omstandigheden van een correspondent te begrijpen en de berichtgeving in context te plaatsen. Daarnaast biedt deze studie wetenschappers handvatten voor vervolgonderzoek. Zo komt er een actuele informatiestroom op gang over het snelveranderende China. Voor het eerst zijn niet-westerse correspondenten en Chinese journalisten bevraagd over hun ervaringen in het Chinese mediasysteem. In een kwalitatief onderzoek zijn de beperkingen en mogelijkheden van correspondenten en journalisten in China bestudeerd. Achttien diepte-interviews met Chinese journalisten, buitenlandse correspondenten, zowel westers als niet-westers, en de beleidsmedewerker van de Nederlandse ambassade zijn afgenomen. Dit onderzoek toont aan dat mogelijkheden vaak gepaard gaan met beperkingen. De nieuwe persregels uit 2008 worden als belangrijke ontwikkeling gezien. Toch namen lokale autoriteiten het niet altijd zo nauw met deze nieuwe regels uit Beijing. Zo was verslag doen in de provincie vaak nog lastig. Dit geldt vooral voor de eerste jaren na invoering van de persregels, later verbeterde de situatie. Een grote verandering qua sfeer, interpretatie en politiek klimaat kwam in 2013. Het jaar waarin Xi Jinping president werd. Hij treedt hard op tegen dissidenten en westerse beïnvloeding. Dat hij westerse ideologieën verwerpt blijkt uit een vertrouwelijke memo van partijleden, genaamd ‘document 9’. Sinds zijn aantreden worden Chinese journalisten vaker verplicht tot ideologische herscholing. Zij moeten een examen doen om een perskaart te verdienen. De examenvragen gaan niet zozeer over journalistiek, maar meer over het socialistische gedachtegoed. Ook hebben buitenlandse nieuwsorganisaties in 2015 steeds vaker te maken met black-outs op televisie. Er worden beelden uit televisiereportages geknipt door het ministerie van Propaganda. Verder blijkt uit dit onderzoek dat de westerse bias nog steeds springlevend is. Niet-westerse correspondenten bekritiseren hun westerse collega’s van het najagen van kritische verhalen. Zij zijn zich op hun beurt bewust dat er zo naar hen gekeken wordt en proberen de bias te vermijden. Een opvallende conclusie tot slot is dat Chinese journalisten van staatsmedia zich vrij voelen. Zij weten wat zij wel en niet kunnen doen binnen de opgestelde regels. Zij zijn zich bewust van de controle en censuur van de Chinese staat, maar zien hierin naast beperkingen ook mogelijkheden.Show less

Backstage photography is a genre within photography that contains intimate behind the scenes photos of celebrities. This thesis is focused on backstage photography within the music industry and in particular the rock & roll genre. Backstage photography however does not solely entail photos that are literally made ‘back stage’ (e.g. in the wings or dressing room of the artist); they also pertain all the photos that are made when the artist is ‘off stage’; whether that be on the street, at a bar or at home. Backstage photos are more private in comparison to the photos that are made of the artist on stage, but can still be part of a ‘public’ space. The main question of this thesis is what these backstage photos mean and how this relates to the photographic aspects of voyeurism and exhibitionism, journalistic and documentary photography in specific, and their position in portrait photography. The first chapter of this thesis explores the applicability of the concepts of voyeurism and exhibitionism to backstage photography. Particular effects such as absorption and ‘to-be-seennes’ are present in backstage photos, albeit incomplete: the artist is never fully absorbed but the photo also does not fully contain an embedded theatricality. The relationship between the artist and the photographer is of high importance; due to the intimate relationship between the subject and the photographer, the subject lowers its guard and allows the photographer to get closer than ever. As a result, the photos explore and explain the artist’ character in new ways. This in turn leads to exhibitionism and shows how the artist, even behind the scenes, partly remains in his role. The spectator of these photographs has certain expectations that the photographer aims to satisfy. The second chapter of this thesis discusses in which ways photojournalistic and documentary photography fit with the concept of backstage photography. The argument is made that backstage photography can be viewed as a result of two important developments: the rise of the tabloid press where photos were first published in the media and the rampant rise of the music industry that permeated global culture and new methods of production, marketing and distribution were realized. It is important to note that a backstage photo can initially be categorized as photojournalism and become part of documentary photography later. Whereas photo assignments are being done under the pretence of photojournalism, they may eventually ‘evolve’ into products of high artistic value and be considered as documentary photography or even ‘art photography’. The third and final chapter analyses the position of the backstage portrait photo. A backstage portrait differs from any other portrait because of the location, setting and attitude or feeling of the photographed artist. Besides, these portraits are often not published at the time they were made. Therefore, the argument can be made that the backstage portrait is part of the private domain instead of the public. This domain changes once the photo does get published. Interestingly, the backstage photo is made in a more private environment, but the model is a public figure. Backstage photos are intriguing because they give a new, different image of a celebrity. Our fascination with the human face resulted in an ever-growing celebrity culture. We like to see how public characters behave on the stage, but even more so within private environments. Backstage photography embraces these desires.Show less

In...Show moreDuring the print era, publishing was marked by the constraints of the book as a physical object with publishers as the industry's gatekeepers deciding which manuscripts would reach the public. In contrast, the age of Web 2.0 is defined by an abundance of freely available resources for information and entertainment. The problem is no longer of the scarcity of content, but rather the attention paid to it. With more and more books published each year by both independent publishers and large publishing conglomerates, and increasing competition from other media formats, the question has become how and where readers discover new books. Focussing on the English Language Trade Market, this thesis reviews market dynamics both in the traditional publishing environment and the online environment, arguing that the discoverability problem limits the diversity of the literary landscape. This issue can be traced back to big publishing's increasing emphasis on author brands as well as the infrastructure of social media which not only adheres to the 'Winner-takes-all' principle, but also caters to the commodification of their users, favouring form over content.Show less

This investigation was accomplished through the examination of twelve case studies that have been selected by the criteria of relatively recent release dates, broad spectrum of genres, and different gaming industries, i.e. AAA/mainstream and Indie developed games. Additionally, the background section of the thesis provides an insight in how text has played a role in the video game culture as well as to create an understanding of what video games are and what the reading culture entails. From this information and evidence it was concluded that contemporary video games contain sufficient amounts of texts to contribute to the reading culture, yet in varying degrees on account of the three factors, namely genre, industry, and realism that influence to what extent and in what manner text is incorporated in video games.Show less
Masterthesis waarin de hoofdvraag: ‘In hoeverre wordt de klokkenluider Snowden door middel van framing in de Nederlandse nieuwsmedia anders weergegeven dan in de Amerikaanse nieuwsmedia?’ wordt...Show moreMasterthesis waarin de hoofdvraag: ‘In hoeverre wordt de klokkenluider Snowden door middel van framing in de Nederlandse nieuwsmedia anders weergegeven dan in de Amerikaanse nieuwsmedia?’ wordt beantwoord aan de hand van een narratieve en framinganalyse van Nederlandse en Amerikaanse nieuwsartikelen. Het onderzoek bouwt voort op de theorie van Wahl-Jorgensen & Hunt (2012) over de representatie van klokkenluiders in de media. Binnen de narratieve analyse staat de theorie van Seal (2009) over criminele helden centraal. Hieruit blijkt dat de eigenschappen van criminele helden sterker aanwezig zijn in de Nederlandse nieuwsmedia dan in de Amerikaanse nieuwsmedia. Vervolgens worden er met de framinganalyse dominante frames in de framematrix van Van Gorp (2009) geplaatst om te onderzoeken op welke manier bepaalde elementen in interpretatiekaders worden uitgelicht. Resultaat hiervan is dat klokkenluider Snowden door middel van framing positiever wordt weergegeven in de onderzochte Nederlandse nieuwsartikelen dan in de onderzochte Amerikaanse nieuwsartikelen. In de Nederlandse nieuwsartikelen komt het ‘criminele held-frame’ dominanter voor dan het ‘crimineel-frame’ en het ‘verrader-frame’. In de Amerikaanse nieuwsartikelen komt het ‘crimineel-frame’ en het ‘verrader-frame’ sterker voor dan in de Nederlandse nieuwsartikelen.Show less

Paratext is a concept coined by French...Show moreThis thesis examines all Dutch editions of Louis Couperus’ De stille kracht to discern trends or developments in the paratextual elements of these editions. Paratext is a concept coined by French literary theorist Gérard Genette. Instead of focussing only on the Genettian textual paratexts this thesis also examines the influence of (cover) illustrations as paratextual elements. De stille kracht was published in 1900, and as this thesis was written in 2015, it thus examines 115 years of De stille kracht publication history. Every chapter covers a few decades, thus presenting the reader with a historical narrative of the novel’s developments through time. The thesis therefore is a ‘biography’ of a book. The most important developments are the canonisation of De stille kracht, especially through the implementation of fore- and afterwords in later editions. The later editions also became part of ‘classic book series’, indicating canonisation of this literary work. A constant trend is the focus of the paratextual elements on the atmosphere and themes of the novel, instead of on the plot. In the end this thesis argues for the importance of Genette’s paratext for book historic and literary research and has shown how widely different one particular text can be presented to a reader.Show less

Hoe kan dat? Aan de hand van een kwantitatieve inhoudsanalyse op nieuwsberichten afkomstig van www.nu.nl wordt het uitdoven van de nieuwsgolf geanalyseerd. Onder andere wordt geconcludeerd dat niuews over de ziekte zelf minder belangrijk is dan nieuws over dreiging in Nederland, Europa en de VS voor het 'hypen' van het onderwerp. Ook is de stemming (angstaanjagend, neutraal of geruststellend) een doorslaggevende factor voor de vlucht die het nieuws neemt.Show less

Het gebruik van...Show moreOmdat journalisten niet alleen concurreren met andere nieuwsmedia maar ook met vele burgers die informatie online plaatsen, staat of valt hun bijdrage met de kwaliteit van hun werk. Het gebruik van een evaluatiekader, waarin beschreven wordt hoe een goed journalistiek werk tot stand komt en eruitziet, helpt bij het bepalen van de kwaliteit van een journalistieke productie. Daarnaast, door in gesprek te gaan met zichzelf, wordt geprobeerd journalistiek te definiëren en wordt de beroepsethiek van het vak continu in vraag gesteld – al dan niet om aanvaardbare gedragingen en grenzen van het beroep aan te geven bij het publiek. Dit wordt het metajournalistieke discours genoemd. Door dit discours te analyseren aan de hand van Shapiro’s evaluatiekader kunnen we begrijpen wat er wordt verstaan onder goede journalistiek. Door het uitvoeren van een discoursanalyse is getracht implicaties, ideeën over en waarden van goede journalistiek te vinden in de gesproken tekst van het televisieprogramma Medialogica. Vervolgens is onderzocht of het evaluatiekader van Shapiro (2010) helpt bij het betekenis geven aan die implicaties, ideeën en waarden. De onderzoeksvraag luidt dan ook als volgt: In hoeverre helpt het evaluatiekader van Shapiro (2010) om het metajournalistieke discours te interpreteren? Uit de analyse blijkt dat het evaluatiekader een verhelderend inzicht biedt bij het interpreteren van het metajournalistieke discours, zoals tot uiting gekomen in Medialogica. Het evaluatiekader laat zien dat Medialogica voornamelijk inzoomt op excellentiecriteria en niet op kwaliteitsnormen. Hieruit kan geconcludeerd worden dat de excellentie van een journalistieke productie voor Medialogica zwaarder weegt dan enkel het voldoen aan de basis, de kwaliteitsnormen. Op meerdere punten blijkt het kader echter niet overeen te komen met de door Medialogica benadrukte journalistieke waarden. Mijn kritiek komt neer op vier punten. De kwaliteitsnorm van ‘style’, te weten het maken van een interessant product, en het excellentiecriterium van ‘discovery’, te weten het maatschappelijk belang van een onderwerp, zijn niet afgebakend. Daarnaast houdt het evaluatiekader geen rekening met de snelheid van nieuws en gaat het uit van veronderstelde effecten in plaats van bewezen effecten. Tot slot wordt er geen rekening gehouden met de kwaliteitseisen van het publiek. Om het evaluatiekader in het vervolg nog bruikbaarder te maken bij het interpreteren van het metajournalistieke discours dient het aangevuld te worden naar aanleiding van deze vier kritiekpunten.Show less

Dit onderzoek geeft...Show moreWeinig studies gaan over de consumptie van celebritynieuws, terwijl steeds meer media zich richten op deze categorie om aan de behoefte van de individuele consument te voldoen. Dit onderzoek geeft daarom antwoord op de vraag welke positie celebritynieuws heeft in de nieuwsconsumptie van het publiek – leidend of niet leidend – en waarom. De verwachting was dat celebritynieuws in hoge mate wordt gelezen. Het onderzoek bestaat uit twee inhoudsanalyses en een focusgroep. Eerst zijn de meest gelezen artikelen van vier nieuwswebsites verzameld. Daarna zijn artikelen verzameld die zes proefpersonen in één dag lazen. De verzamelde artikelen werden vervolgens op nieuwscategorieën met elkaar vergeleken. Ter verdieping werd met de proefpersonen een focusgroep gehouden. De proefpersonen bleken veel minder celebritynieuws te lezen dan het publiek van de websites. De focusgroep onthulde dat er een soort stigma op celebritynieuws hangt en dat er sociale wenselijkheid in het spel was tijdens het onderzoek: de proefpersonen zeiden de categorie niet te lezen, maar waren wel op de hoogte van het laatste celebritynieuws. De resultaten suggereren dat celebritynieuws een ‘guilty pleasure’ is voor het publiek.Show less

It focuses on the author’s impressions while visiting the Hungarian cities, baths, and the northern gold, silver and copper mine region. The journal stands out as one of the most detailed descriptions of places and interesting observation of the era. The intention of the edition is to provide an introduction to the background of Edward Browne’s work, to edit the selected parts of the travel journal, and to design it in the form of a book in order to make it accessible to the general reader. This thesis comprises two parts. The first part introduces the reader to the historical background of travelling in seventeenth century, analyses the motives of Browne’s journey, describes his journal, and specifies the editorial methods. The second part consists of the selected chapters of his journal. Following the footsteps of Edward Browne, this book aims to provide an authentic reflection of his experiences, and a guide for those readers who wish to visit the country and the mentioned places today.Show less
Burgerjournalistiek speelt een steeds grotere rol in de wereld van de (foto)journalistiek. Steeds meer nieuwsmedia maken gebruik van deze verslaggeving door burgers, bijvoorbeeld door hun foto’s in...Show moreBurgerjournalistiek speelt een steeds grotere rol in de wereld van de (foto)journalistiek. Steeds meer nieuwsmedia maken gebruik van deze verslaggeving door burgers, bijvoorbeeld door hun foto’s in kranten of online te publiceren. In de nieuwsverslaggeving van de burgeroorlog in Syrië is de rol van burgerjournalistiek nadat het land als onveilig voor journalisten werd verklaard, groter dan ooit tevoren. De fotoverslaggeving van de oorlog in Syrië leent zich dan ook perfect voor een onderzoek dat het verschil tussen professionele- en burgerjournalisten wil meten. Dat verschil is in dit onderzoek gemeten in termen van nieuwswaardigheid. Aan de hand van een op foto’s aangepaste versie van de Theorie van Nieuwswaarden van Galtung en Ruge (1965) is onderzocht of er verschillen bestaan tussen gepubliceerde nieuwsfoto’s gemaakt door professionele- en burgerjournalisten. Nieuwsfoto’s zijn nog niet vaak onderzocht aan de hand van de twaalf klassieke nieuwswaarden, en nog niet eerder werd het verschil tussen professionele- en burgerjournalisten gemeten in termen van nieuwswaardigheid. Uit eerder onderzoek naar burgerjournalistiek blijkt dat de journalistiek steeds meer vloeibaar wordt (Deuze, 2006). De grenzen tussen professionals en burgers vervagen in de hele wereld, zo ook in de journalistiek. Voor de nieuwswaardigheid van de nieuwsfoto’s over het geheel genomen werden dan ook geen grote verschillen verwacht tussen professionele- en burgerjournalisten. Mortensen (2014) stelt echter dat burgers zich wel onderscheiden door het principe van right time, right place (Mortensen, 2014). Hieruit volgde de verwachting dat foto’s gemaakt door burgers vaker nieuwswaarden in zich hebben waarbij het tijdsbestek tussen gebeurtenis en het maken van de foto van belang is. Te weten de waarden frequency en unexpectedness. Dit onderzoek bevestigt het idee dat burgerjournalisten zich onderscheiden door ‘het op het juiste moment, op de juiste plaats zijn’. Nieuwsfoto’s gemaakt door burgerjournalisten bevatten significant vaker de waarde frequency dan nieuwsfoto’s gemaakt door professionele journalisten. Professionele journalisten onderscheiden zich weer door de voordelen van de perskaart. Zij zijn vaker aanwezig bij van tevoren geplande persmomenten en onderscheiden zich hiermee van hun burgercollega’s. Nieuwsfoto’s gemaakt door professionele journalisten tonen significant vaker de waarde reference to elite persons dan nieuwsfoto’s gemaakt door burgerjournalisten. Ook de theorie van Mark Deuze over de vloeibare journalistiek wordt onderschreven. Er blijkt geen significant verschil te vinden tussen nieuwsfoto’s gemaakt door professionele- en burgerjournalisten, als het gaat om de algemene nieuwswaardigheid.Show less
