Er verdwijnen titels en media hebben niet meer de capaciteit om nieuwsgebeurtenissen vanuit verschillende perspectieven te belichten. Dit blijkt des te meer in lokale nieuwsecosystemen. Dit is een gevaar voor de lokale democratie, omdat een divers nieuwsaanbod belangrijk is om iedere bevolkingsgroep een stem te geven. Verschillende organisaties en instituten richten zich daarom op het behoud van diversiteit in de media en stimuleren media die de diversiteit kunnen vergroten. In het terugbrengen van die diversiteit worden vaak alternatieve media als oplossing genoemd. Zij kunnen nieuwe perspectieven bieden en divers nieuws aanbieden. Daar is echter niet iedereen het over eens. Deze scriptie probeert een bijdrage te leveren aan dit debat door te onderzoeken of een medialandschap met meer alternatieve media ook een diverser nieuwsaanbod heeft. De onderzoeksvraag van deze scriptie is als volgt: ‘In welke mate staat het aandeel van alternatieve media binnen lokale medialandschappen in de grootste steden van Nederland in relatie tot de inhoudelijke diversiteit in deze landschappen?’. Deze scriptie vindt plaats binnen het kader van een onderzoek van het Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek naar de nieuwsecosystemen in de vier grote steden van Nederland. In dit vervolg worden data gebruikt die in drie steden, Amsterdam, Den Haag en Utrecht, verzameld zijn. Ten eerste wordt gezocht naar de steden met het minste en juist grootste aandeel van alternatieve media. Daarna worden deze steden vergeleken op het gebied van diversiteit aan de hand van vier indicatoren: genres, onderwerpen, bronnen en herkomst van online berichten. Tenslotte worden ook alternatieve media met traditionele media op deze punten vergeleken. Als maat voor diversiteit is de Herfindahl-Hirschman index gebruikt. De uitkomsten voor dit onderzoek worden geduid met behulp van een theoretisch kader dat bestaat uit theorieën over het democratisch belang van journalistieke diversiteit en theorieën die uitleggen wat media pluriformiteit en diversiteit zijn of zou moeten zijn. Ook de concepten traditionele/alternatieve media, gatekeeping en churnalism komen aan bod. Utrecht blijkt het grootste aandeel berichten van alternatieve media te hebben, Amsterdam juist het minste. De data wijzen uit dat het nieuwsaanbod in Utrecht echter niet diverser is. Slechts de diversiteit op het gebied van genres lijkt enigszins groter. Het grootste verschil blijkt uit de originaliteit van de berichten. Dit komt ook naar voren bij de vergelijken tussen de twee mediasoorten. Bijna een kwart van de berichten in Utrecht is niet origineel. In Amsterdam zijn alle berichten origineel. Alternatieve media lijken het nieuwsecosysteem niet diverser te maken. Dit onderzoek toont echter geen causaal verband aan. Vervolgonderzoek dat een causaal verband tussen de aanwezigheid van alternatieve media en de diversiteit van het nieuwsaanbod kan leggen is daarom gewenst.Show less

Irony appears in different disguises, largely depending on the function of it; what the ironist wants to achieve. Applying it can originate from an urge to complicate a matter of discussion but can also be applied to translate the oppositional stance the ironist wants to reveal. In the case of the enigmatic Kaurismäki his intentions or motivations in his choice of theme and subject are essential to the humour he adapts in telling his stories, but always remains somewhat vague. This thesis provides an image of how irony prevails and functions in his cinema on the base of a series of comparative case studies linked to three of his films: I Hired a Contract Killer (1990), The Man Without a Past (2002) and The Other Side of Hope (2017). It eventually sets out an idea of a filmmaker who, by applying irony, both distances though simultaneously engages himself with his audience in his own wayward fashion.Show less

Daarom zijn een groep rechtse en een groep linkse jongeren acht casussen van vermeende haatspraak op Facebook voorgelegd met de vraag of de moderatoren van de site het bericht zouden moeten verwijderen. Daaruit bleek dat de jongeren met een linkse politieke voorkeur significant vaker voor verwijdering kozen dan de jongeren met een rechtse politieke signatuur.Show less

This research demonstrates and analyses a quantitative approach to literary criticism in the Digital Humanities by predominantly aiming to answer the question: is there a clearly distinguishable...Show moreThis research demonstrates and analyses a quantitative approach to literary criticism in the Digital Humanities by predominantly aiming to answer the question: is there a clearly distinguishable female writing style that is a shared foundation of female author’s novels in the Victorian period? In order to achieve this goal, a number of steps had to be taken. First, a foundation for this research’s case study was established by explaining the socio-cultural history of women writers in the Victorian period and by detailing the history of the Digital Humanities and computational research. Secondly, the compilation of the corpus and the methodology of the case study were elaborately explained and all decisions justified. The predominant terminology – the terms writing style and gender – were clarified as well in order to exclude confusion or multiple interpretations of these elements. Thirdly, the results of the case study were presented and interpreted. Here a conscious decision was made to only discuss these outliers briefly instead of examining them with close reading as this study predominantly focused on similarities instead of abnormalities in writing style between women in the Victorian period. Lastly, the limits of this study were discussed in detail and suggestions for future research were made.Show less

Er is een kwalitatief onderzoek uitgevoerd door middel van diepte...Show moreDeze scriptie presenteert een onderzoek naar hoe studenten de geloofwaardigheid van gezondheidsnieuwsberichten beoordelen. Er is een kwalitatief onderzoek uitgevoerd door middel van diepte-interviews met twaalf rechten- en geneeskundestudenten. Dit onderzoek richt zich op de geloofwaardigheid van gezondheidsnieuwsberichten gepubliceerd door NU.nl. Er is gekozen voor NU.nl omdat het een groot aandeel heeft in het brengen van nieuws. Het is de best bezochte nieuwssite van Nederland. Het accent van dit onderzoek ligt op gezondheidsnieuwsberichten, omdat dit soort artikelen van invloed zijn op het welzijn van de mens. De beoordeelde artikelen zijn door de onderzoeker geschreven en op basis van de eerste zes interviews gemanipuleerd naar aanleiding van de theorie. Uit het onderzoek komt naar voren dat de twee gebruikte theorieën over message credibility van Metzger (2003) en Basch et al. (2017) bruikbaar zijn voor het toetsen van geloofwaardigheid. De factoren die deze onderzoekers aanhalen in hun theorieën zijn volgens de respondenten belangrijk wanneer zij berichten op geloofwaardigheid beoordelen. Daarnaast is er een volgorde van belangrijke factoren te zien, genaamd de primaire en secundaire factoren. Primaire factoren zijn factoren die de studenten eerst noemen wanneer gevraagd wordt waar zij het artikel op geloofwaardigheid beoordelen. Secundaire factoren zijn op een tweede indruk beoordeeld. Deze factoren zijn voor de studenten van belang zijn bij de beoordeling, maar kaarten dit pas aan wanneer de onderzoeker in de richting van deze factoren stuurt en doorvraagt of andere punten opvallen. Dit resultaat is opvallend, omdat het in de gebruikte theorieën over message credibility niet naar voren komt.Show less

Yet, there is tech beyond the ebook. The emergent technology of text mining can affect not just the means of communication of literature, but also its actual form and content. Text mining is a technology originally created by and for an interdisciplinary academic field that manages to exploit texts as a source of extractable data using algorithmic analysis. This thesis discusses how the technology is already, and could be used as an aid to support processes in trade fiction publishing. Three case studies prove how involvements of text mining in trade fiction publishing have a profound impact on the content of the published material.Show less

Aan de ene kant is hij president van het grootste land ter wereld, Rusland. Aan de andere kant is Vladimir een normale Rus uit Sint-Petersburg. Dit onderzoek zocht uit welk ethos het Russische journaal, enerzijds, en het Nederlandse journaal, anderzijds, van Poetin schiepen in het jaar voor de Russische presidentsverkiezingen van 2018 en welke (visuele) retorische middelen daarbij zijn gebruikt. Op basis van een kwalitatieve retorische analyse van 32 Nederlandse en Russische tv-items over Poetin uit 2017 concludeert dit onderzoek dat het ethos van president Poetin over het algemeen bestempeld kan worden als een despoot, een krachtige leider, of een man van het volk. Deze soorten ethos komen volgens dit onderzoek tot stand door de invloed van stijlmiddelen, framing en quotes/toespraken van Poetin zelf, collega-wereldleiders en/of derden. Vanwege het feit dat Poetins ethos voor een groot deel tot stand komt door middel van journalistieke arbeid, geeft dit onderzoek inzicht in de manier waarop journalisten te werk gaan bij het scheppen van het ethos van een wereldleider en de gevolgen die een dergelijke manier van werken heeft voor Poetins ethos. Dat alles gebeurt door middel van een unieke inkijk in de Russische berichtgeving over Poetin.Show less

Hiervoor...Show moreIn dit onderzoek wordt er door middel van een kwalitatieve inhoudsanalyse onderzocht op welke manier de nieuwswaarden vorm krijgen in de constructieve online berichtgeving van Omroep West. Hiervoor zijn eenentwintig nieuwsberichten gecodeerd en geanalyseerd. Hieruit blijkt dat de journalisten van Omroep West verschillende manieren hanteren om vorm te geven aan de constructieve nieuwswaarden zoals ‘goed nieuws’, ‘publiek’ en ‘oplossingsgericht’. Zij doen dit onder andere door het toevoegen van positieve elementen door middel van additie. Het gaat dan om elementen zoals van tips en alternatieven, door het gebruik van de Hearken-methode en door te zoeken naar oplossingen bij instanties, politici en andere betrokkenen. Hieruit blijkt ook dat de journalisten een goede visie hanteren van constructieve journalistiek en hier vaak op een juiste manier naar handelen. Bovendien wijst dit onderzoek uit dat de nieuwswaardentheorie een goede basis biedt voor het analyseren van constructieve journalistiek.Show less

At the same time, the general public became much more familiar with images and imagery thanks to the rise of photography and the growing popularity and accessibility of art. In this thesis, it is researched how newspaper front pages function as free-standing images themselves. First, the technological, societal, and cultural history of newspapers is discussed. Next, several art historical theories on composition are discussed. These two elements are put together in the third chapter for a case study of 100 years of front pages of Nieuwsblad van het Noorden. The compositions of the front pages of this Dutch regional newspaper aren't very pleasing from an art historical perspective, but do tend to some form of balance. The recognisability of newspaper front pages is confirmed with this research.Show less
