Hiervoor is gebruik gemaakt van een kwalitatieve en kwantitatieve framinganalyse. Uit de kwalitatieve analyse blijkt dat zowel Wilders als Baudet de Nederlandse identiteit vormgeven op basis van waarderende frames die geen specifieke kenmerken voortbrengen, waardoor het Nederlanderschap berust op een gevoel, en niet op een definitie. Identiteit is in de overtuiging van beide populisten statisch, het moet beschermd worden. Dit uitgangspunt zorgt ervoor dat de invalshoek van de frames verband houden met gevaar en het terugveroveren van de controle over Nederland door het volk. Het tweede deel van dit onderzoek, de kwantitatieve analyse, laat zien hoe de Volkskrant en De Telegraaf omgaan met de frames van Wilders en Baudet. De Volkskrant als linksgeoriënteerd medium heeft een merkbare afkeer van Wilders en Baudet en zoekt de confrontatie op. De Telegraaf is een rechts kanaal dat minder moeite heeft met de ideologieën van de rechtspopulisten, de krant neemt een gematigde positie in ten opzichte van de uitingen van de politici. Opvallend is dat de FvD-leider aan het begin van de onderzoeksperiode nog een relatieve onbekende is en weinig aandacht trekt, terwijl Wilders vrijwel de gehele periode stabiel het nieuws beheerst. De bevindingen van dit onderzoek tonen aan dat de uitingen van Wilders en Baudet passen in de rechtspopulistische theorie en de werking van de hedendaagse media beide politici in staat stelt te scoren en te agenderen.Show less

Hiervoor zijn eenentwintig nieuwsberichten gecodeerd en geanalyseerd. Hieruit blijkt dat de journalisten van Omroep West verschillende manieren hanteren om vorm te geven aan de constructieve nieuwswaarden zoals ‘goed nieuws’, ‘publiek’ en ‘oplossingsgericht’. Zij doen dit onder andere door het toevoegen van positieve elementen door middel van additie. Het gaat dan om elementen zoals van tips en alternatieven, door het gebruik van de Hearken-methode en door te zoeken naar oplossingen bij instanties, politici en andere betrokkenen. Hieruit blijkt ook dat de journalisten een goede visie hanteren van constructieve journalistiek en hier vaak op een juiste manier naar handelen. Among the many industries deeply affected by this development is publishing: Readers are now creating their own book reviews on YouTube. The thesis at hand examines how this BookTube phenomenon affects cultural and social contexts of reading. BookTube constitutes a dynamic new agent in the field of trade publishing due to its specific resources in social and symbolic capital. It functions as an amplifier for authors and publishers while disrupting established forms of book reviewing in traditional media. Furthermore, BookTube exemplifies that online platforms have a particular relevance to the generation of ‘digital natives’ in terms of reading and consuming habits and the forming of its attitude towards books.Show less

Hopefully this thesis will also shed a bit of light on how qualitative data analysis methods can be applied not only to textual narratives, but also to (news) photographs. On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered two disasters. Off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku, the most powerful earthquake in Japan’s recorded history occurred (9.0 on the Richter scale). As a result, the eastern coasts of Japan were hit by devastating tsunami waves, killing around 15,000 people. Another disaster quickly followed. Because of the quake and tsunami, there were level 7 meltdowns at the nuclear reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex. It would be the largest nuclear incident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. It goes without saying that this was a major news story. But after a while, the discussion in the Western media seemed to shift from actual disaster reporting to assumptions about the Japanese mentality. Blatant stereotypes about Japanese people became more and more apparent in stories about the disaster. Stereotypes not only appeared in the textual narrative, but could also be found within its accompanying images. So it is within the photographs of Japanese people dealing with the tsunami and nuclear disaster that this research attempts to uncover certain stereotypical cues and tropes. These cues and tropes ultimately contribute to the collective manifestations of stereotypes about Japanese people. Current psychological theory conceptualizes stereotypes as cognitive structures or schemas that represent widely shared beliefs about the defining characteristics of social groups. The media most commonly use stereotypical categorizations of individuals or groups based on race or ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability, employment, and age. These stereotypes are automatically activated when audiences encounter cues or symbols in mass media, according to Peffley, Shields and Williams (1996) and Abraham and Appiah (2006). Stereotypes about Eastern people and cultures in particular have been widely researched. Edward Saïd first posited the revolutionary theoretical framework of Orientalism, which is how he coined the particular form that Western stereotypical understandings of Asian cultures has taken. He, and many other experts, claim that this Orientalism has evolved into a cultural myth permeating Western thought. It has been articulated through metaphors which characterize the East in ways which emphasize its strangeness and otherness. The Oriental person is made up of a single image which carries with it the taint of inferiority. Kathleen Tierney and Erica Kuligowski postulate that the media help enforce already existing disaster myths among the general public and organizational actors. Examples of such myths are the notions that disasters are accompanied by looting, social disorganization, panic, and deviant behavior. This is relevant because the Japanese people after the disaster seemed to subvert many of those myths. Surprisingly, this subversion was seen as conformation of the Japanese supposedly stoic yet respectful nature, therefore affirming Orientalist stereotypes. Through the application of these theories and a qualitative data analysis of a selection of 200 images, this research uncovers how stereotypical cues and tropes about Japanese people manifest themselves in these photographs. Whether or not Western news media possess that knowledge and thus deliberately choose to photographs with stereotypical elements, however, are two wholly different questions.Show less

Zo ook in de journalistiek ...Show moreDit onderzoek richt zich op authenticiteit. Consumenten steeds vaker op zoek naar authentieke producten en ervaringen (Gilmore & Pine, 2007; 2013; Boyle, 2004). Zo ook in de journalistiek (Costera Meijer, 2010; Harte, Howells & Williams, 2019). Volgens verschillende onderzoeken, waaronder Koetsenruijter & De Jong (2019), Sie (2017) en Harte, Howells & Williams (2019) is authenticiteit een sleutelwoord waarmee lokale nieuwsmedia zich kunnen onderscheiden van regionale en landelijke media. Ook Nielsen (2015) onderschrijft dit belang van authenticiteit. Hij stelt dat lokale media een authentieke vorm van nieuws bieden die bij regionale en landelijke media niet te verkrijgen is. De lokale journalistiek zit in een moeilijke periode. Bezuinigingen, wegvallende redacties en teruglopende inkomsten zorgen ervoor dat lokale media moeite hebben het hoofd boven water te houden. Lokale media slinken (Kik, Bakker, Buijs, & Katz, 2012), terwijl het belang van de journalistiek en haar controlerende rol alleen maar groter is geworden (Koetsenruijter & van der Lubben, 2018). Authenticiteit kan als strategie worden ingezet om de lokale journalistiek te helpen in tijden dat deze sector het lastig heeft (Harte, Howells & Williams, 2019; De Jong & Koetsenruijter, 2019). Door zich bewust te zijn van de elementen van authenticiteit in de lokale journalistiek en hierop in te spelen, kan authenticiteit als unique selling point dienen en het vakgebied helpen zich verder te ontwikkelen en te versterken. Er is nog weinig onderzoek gedaan naar hoe authenticiteit gestalte kan krijgen in de lokale journalistiek. Dit onderzoek richt zich daarom op de vraag welke vormen van authenticiteit door communicatieprofessionals en journalisten worden aangewezen in de lokale journalistiek. Volgens Trilling (1972, p.149) kan je authenticiteit als een ‘construct’ beschouwen. Hoewel de perceptie van authenticiteit per persoon kan verschillen, zijn er kenmerken die een voorspeller kunnen zijn voor authenticiteit. In dit onderzoek staan er drie vormen van authenticiteit centraal: nabijheid, oprechtheid en betrokkenheid. Deze vormen zijn gekozen op basis van zowel bestaande literatuur als uit eerste bestudering van het onderzoeksmateriaal. Naast de theorie van authenticiteit staan er nog twee theorieën centraal in dit onderzoek, namelijk de theorie van de functies van de journalistiek en de theorie over boundary work: de discussie over wat goede journalistiek is. Omdat authenticiteit in de lokale journalistiek een grotere rol speelt dan bij regionale of landelijke media, kan de invulling van de journalistieke functies namelijk veranderen. Tevens kan ook de focus op de functies veranderen. Ditzelfde geldt voor het boundary work. De rol van authenticiteit zorgt er in de lokale media ook voor dat de discussie over wat het vak journalistiek inhoudt, kan veranderen. De drie theorieën staan dus met elkaar in verbinding. Deze drie theorieën worden onderzocht door het discours over authenticiteit in de lokale journalistiek in beeld te brengen en op deze manier vormen van authenticiteit aan te kunnen wijzen. Hiervoor zijn er 47 interviews met zowel journalisten als communicatieprofessionals uit de provincie Zuid-Holland geanalyseerd. In het discours over authenticiteit in de lokale journalistiek wordt vaak over drie vormen van authenticiteit gepraat, namelijk nabijheid, oprechtheid en betrokkenheid. Per vorm van authenticiteit zijn meerdere sublabels uit de interviews gedestilleerd. Zo spelen bij nabijheid de nabijheid van een nieuwsgebeurtenis zelf, de journalist en het medium een belangrijke rol. Oprechtheid omvat sublabels die betrekking hebben op het ethos van de journalist of het medium, de persoonlijkheid en de menselijkheid. Betrokkenheid is ingevuld door sublabels die concretiseren hoe lezers meer betrokken raken met de lokale journalistiek. De authenticiteit die volgens de geïnterviewden van toepassing is in de lokale journalistiek, heeft effect op de functies van journalistiek en haar boundary work. Op het gebied van de journalistieke functies is er een verschuiving van de focus te zien. Waar landelijke media zich voornamelijk bezighouden met het vervullen van de controlerende functie, zoals bronnen checken en hoor en wederhoor plegen, is dit in de lokale journalistiek een minder voorkomende praktijk. In de lokale journalistiek ligt de nadruk veel meer op de sociaal bindende functie. Het lokale journalistieke werk is er meer op gericht om de sociale cohesie binnen een gemeenschap te versterken. Lokale media zorgen voor herkenbare verhalen door te schrijven met én over mensen. Maar ook door onderdeel te zijn van de lokale sfeer, zich daadwerkelijk te mengen in de gemeenschap. Ze staan dicht bij de mensen, dichterbij dan regionale of landelijke media staan. De informerende functie is voor de lokale journalistiek ook erg belangrijk. Lokale media zijn dé informatieverstrekkers van lokaal nieuws. Wanneer deze media wegvallen, zal dit vooral in kleinere gemeentes duidelijk te voelen zijn. Het is dus een functie die door lokale media zich goed vervuld moet worden. Mensen hebben nu eenmaal behoefte aan lokaal nieuws. Lokale media moeten hierin de beste (kunnen) zijn, aangezien zij ín de gemeenschap zitten en van de hoed en de rand weten. Authenticiteit in de lokale journalistiek zorgt er ook voor dat journalisten en communicatieprofessionals het beroep journalistiek anders invullen dan regionale en landelijke media. In het boundary work van de lokale journalistiek is er minder focus op de professionaliteit van deelnemers en de journalistieke praktijken en is er meer oog voor authentieke kenmerken. Waar regionale en landelijke journalistiek hun vakgebied voornamelijk inkaderen op het gebied van principes zoals hoor en wederhoor, doet de lokale journalistiek dit dus anders. Dit betekent dat de lokale journalistiek zich (nog meer) kan profileren op basis van authenticiteit. Juist omdat lokale media hierin anders opereren dan de regionale en landelijke journalistiek. Lokale media kunnen authenticiteit inzetten als unique selling point om zo een onderscheidend vermogen te creëren. Hoewel je ook vormen van authenticiteit ziet terugkomen in landelijke media, is authenticiteit wel iets dat bij regionale en landelijke media in mindere mate te verkrijgen is. Authenticiteit is voor lokale journalistiek het sleutelwoord om hun positie in het medialandschap te behouden en versterken.Show less

Despite the proliferation of scholarship about the...Show moreThis thesis examines the identities and experiences of second-generation British Muslim women in Nida Manzoor’s We Are Lady Parts (2021). Despite the proliferation of scholarship about the complexity of Islamic practices and experiences of Muslims in the West, (immigrant) Muslim women are still plagued with homogenizing assumptions that relegate them to the realm of the passive or the dangerous. We Are Lady Parts demonstrates these realities while also offering alternative ways of understanding Muslim women by centering universal issues of faith, friendship, love and belonging. Using postcolonial and feminist theoretical frameworks, I aim to understand how unconventional representations of punk Muslim women undermine current patriarchal and colonial discourses both in Muslim and non-Muslim communities. I pay special attention to the women’s gender performativity and the ways in which it enables performative agency in their musical performances. I then address the heterogeneity of the characters’ identities by analyzing how they navigate their desires, romantic relationships, and religion. Finally, I examine the ways in which the women are excluded from embracing a British identity and how they form alternative paths to belonging via sisterhood and a decolonial worldview.Show less

Door middel van een inhoudsanalyse van de richtlijnen van ANP, Associated Press, Reuters, National Press Photographers Association en World Press Photo en interviews met beeldredacteuren van De Volkskrant, NOS, ANP, World Press Photo en De Correspondent, wordt een antwoord gegeven op de de volgende vraag: Wat zijn de functies van beeldbewerkingsrichtlijnen bij media-organisaties, afgaande op de richtlijnen zelf en op de uitleg van de opstellers? De analyse toont aan dat de richtlijnen de rol van de fotograaf niet altijd waarheidsgetrouw beschrijven. Een deel van de richtlijnen houdt vast aan een verouderd idee van persfotografie als neutrale, niet door mensen beïnvloede nieuwsvorm.Show less

Het model dat een systematische beoordeling van de...Show moreIn deze scriptie staat het onderzoeksmodel naar de kwaliteit van storytelling in online news galleries van Caple en Knox (2015) centraal. Het model dat een systematische beoordeling van de kwaliteit van storytelling in online news galleries biedt, is pas een jaar oud en weinig in de praktische uitwerking en de toepasbaarheid getest. Het onderzoeksmodel bestaat uit drie onderdelen: image sequencing, text cohesion en news type. In dit onderzoek wordt specifiek onderzoek gedaan naar een onderdeel van het onderzoeksmodel namelijk text cohesion. In dit deel van het onderzoeksmodel worden de bijschriften van online news galleries beoordeeld. Aan de hand van een groter corpus dan dat Caple en Knox (2015) hebben gebruikt om het model op te stellen wordt het model geëvalueerd. Dat wil zeggen dat er dertig dagen lang dagelijks van achttien verschillende media online news galleries zijn vastgelegd in een databestand. Dit heeft een bestand opgeleverd van 508 online news galleries met daarin 8043 afbeeldingen met bijschrift. In deze database zijn tevens de algemene eigenschappen van de galleries vastgelegd en daarnaast zijn de waarden die in het onderzoeksmodel genoemd worden vastgelegd en gecodeerd. De vraag die centraal staat in het onderzoek is: “In hoeverre is het huidige onderzoeksmodel van Caple en Knox geschikt om kwaliteit in storytelling in online news galleries te evalueren?” Er wordt zowel kwantitatief als kwalitatief onderzoek gedaan naar een specifiek onderdeel in het onderzoeksmodel genaamd ‘text cohesion’, waarbij de bijschriften van de online news galleries aan bod komen. Het onderzoeksmodel bestaat ten tijde van het voorliggende onderzoek pas een jaar en de praktische uitwerking en toepasbaarheid ervan is nog niet geëvalueerd. Uit deze evaluatie zijn enkele aanvullingen op het huidige model naar voren gekomen die het model zouden kunnen verbeteren. Zo blijkt dat de sectie caption uniqueness als betrouwbaar te meten kan worden beschouwd, maar dat de sectie text relations uitbreiding behoeft. De sectie text relations valt uiteen in twee onderdelen welke na evaluatie door middel van dit onderzoek incompleet blijken te zijn. Daarom wordt in de conclusie van dit onderzoek beargumenteerd dat aan het onderdeel nuclearity de waarde ‘none’ toegevoegd moet worden en aan het onderdeel caption relations de waarde ‘thematic’ toegevoegd moet worden. Door het toevoegen van deze waarden aan het onderzoeksmodel kan op een meer betrouwbare wijze onderzocht worden wat de kwaliteit van van storytelling in online news galleries is.Show less
