It offers a comparative analysis of Menemism and Kirchnerism, their discourse regarding the last military dictatorship and their relationship with human rights activist groups, notably Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo. Additionally, it attempts to conduct an early analysis of newly elected president Alberto Fernández and whether he is likely to follow the ideological path of his predecessor, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. It understands post-dictatorship Argentina through the lenses of global issues such as populism and collective memory.Show less

In het theoretisch kader zullen de concepten neopopulisme, politiek leiderschap en politieke legitimiteit verduidelijkt worden. In het hierop volgende hoofdstuk wordt er de diepte in gegaan en wordt de historische context belicht. De onderwerpen in hoofdstuk twee zijn achtereenvolgend: de opkomst van het Neopopulisme in Latijns-Amerika en het hierbij aansluitend politiek leiderschap; de constructie van politieke legitimiteit in de Pink Tide; het falen van het neoliberale model en de opkomst van het post-neoliberalisme in Bolivia (1990-2006). In het laatste hoofdstuk worden de ambtstermijnen van Evo Morales zelf onder de loep genomen. Due to the fact that Mexico is a transit country for many criminal organizations, crime and violence are rampant throughout the country. Calderón's solution to combat this increase in violence, was to implement the military into daily affairs and to militarize the Mexican police force. The Fairtrade Labelling Organization claims to improve the working conditions of those farmers. The main goal of this thesis is to show the impact of the certification on cacao producers and their families in Ecuador, and which role cooperatives have in the Fairtrade network. The corresponding hypothesis was that the cacao producers in Ecuador have more access to social services and education, due to the improvement of their livelihoods with the certificate, while the Fairtrade benefits are a complex process, and the role of cooperatives is crucial.Show less

However, it has also taken very seriously certain commitments of the global drug prohibition regime, such as combating illegal drug trafficking and coca-paste interdiction. Bolivian policies under Evo Morales and the MAS both resist and comply to international drug prohibition. This thesis is interested in exploring the developments leading up to this change in Bolivian policy and subsequent actions undertaken domestically and in the international arena. My principal academic interest is to bring clarity to Bolivian coca policy innovations, domestic and international, in relation to the drug prohibition regime and the American drug war.Show less

The Caribbean, is annually devastated by the...Show moreThis thesis aims to analyze the, effects of Regional Integration and Security Cooperation in dealing with drug trafficking in CARICOM from 2000 to 2010. The Caribbean, is annually devastated by the ever increasing influx of drug related crimes in its region, thus preventing the successful development of regional integration and security cooperation. Through the presentation of two case studies on Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, a clear portrayal is given on the existing conditions of drug trafficking in the Caribbean, as well as, the actions taken by the respective governments and CARICOM. The approach of analysis in these thesis was exhibited in three chapters presenting the theoretical contextualization of the topic, a historical timeline of regional integration and security cooperation in Latin America and finally, the in depth discussion between the two case studies. The conclusions addressed in this thesis pointed out, that domestic corruption in governance, misalignment of interests between the member states, ineffective institutional practices and a complex geographical disposition lead to a daunting problem in which, drug trafficking is flourishing almost uncontrollably.Show less

Currently, Colombia is experiencing a ´memory boom´...Show moreHistorical memory plays an important role in the aftermath of a conflict for exposing the atrocities that happened and demanding accountability. Currently, Colombia is experiencing a ´memory boom´ even though the conflict has not ended yet. The crisis of displacement is going on for years, and these internal displaced persons that have resettled in the large cities are sharing their stories of violence and claiming recognition. This thesis is the result of a research to understand the role of historical memory in processes of reconciliation for victims of displacement in Bogota, Colombia between 2011-2015. This study analyzes the construction of the Center for Memory Peace and Reconciliation in Bogotá and its role in promoting memory building in the city. It shows how the internally displaced persons use these memory practices to claim citizenship in the capital: by enhancing their self-esteem and confidence, establishing a place where they belong, contesting the negative discourse and by forming social organizations claiming human rights.Show less
