Whereas almost all research on the subject has focused on the combatants (the military and special units that stormed the train), hijackers and hostages, I look at the role of the supporting units: the regular and riot police. I have interviewed eight members of these forces and dug deep in archives to describe how the police organisation and the policemen operated during the hijackings and its immediate aftermath.Show less

From the moment that South Korea was forced to open its markets by the IMF and America as a result of the Asian financial crisis, their popular culture has been gaining worldwide recognition. On every continent we can find k-pop fans and Korean dramas on television. This phenomenon got the interest of the media, politicians and scholars. In this paper I’ve been trying to answer the questions who are behind the success of the Korean wave and how do they think about the Korean wave? It turns out that the Korean wave deliberately was created by the Korean government. In 1998 the government decided that the movie industry would be their key industry of growth. The idea was that the exports of movies would bring in a lot of money. The policies of the 1980s had an indirect effect on the drama and music industries. Korean entertainment companies used the popularity of Korean movies and dramas in other countries to successfully export k-pop. For entertainment companies it is essential to export their music to other countries, because the Korean music market is too small to sustain itself.Show less

Dit onderzoekt benadert het Nederlandse energiebeleid ten aanzien van Rusland sinds de val van de Sovjet-Unie, omdat voornamelijk de afgelopen twee decennia de energierelatie tussen beiden is geintensiveerd. Het onderzoek richt zich op het bilaterale en multilaterale kader, het belang van energievoorzieningszekerheid en de rol die Rusland hierin voor Nederland speelt en natuurlijk de belangrijkste overeenkomst tussen Nederland en Rusland: gas.Show less

In vroegmoderne steden waren allerlei mogelijkheden voor geschilbeslechting voorhanden. Echtelieden konden hun problemen onder meer voorleggen aan de kerk en aan civiele en criminele schepenbanken. Het onderzoek laat zien dat de juridische handelingsruimte van vrouwen niet onderdeed voor die van mannen wanneer zij oplossingen zochten voor hun geschillen.Show less

In this thesis I have attempted to determine to what degree the colonial discourse(the publicly expressed world view and moral codes of the ruling colonial elites)in the Netherlands-Indies...Show moreIn this thesis I have attempted to determine to what degree the colonial discourse(the publicly expressed world view and moral codes of the ruling colonial elites)in the Netherlands-Indies conflicted with the phenomenon of colonial hybridity. I have distilled the colonial discourse from the writings of multiple researchers and confronted this with everyday reality. I have gained my data about everyday in the Netherlands-Indies from the biographical interviews contained in the SMGI collection at the KITLV institute and from a pair of Indies writers. What I have found during my research was that everyday reality was far more hybrid and that people would associate and mix with other ethnic groups far more than the colonial discourse as spread by the colonial elites would suggest. The various manuscripts related to this text are explored...Show moreThe thesis presents an introduction and edition of the Chronicon Moissiacense, a Carolingian world chronicle as contained in BN lat. 4886. The various manuscripts related to this text are explored and placed in a stemma, followed by a review of previous editions and a short exploration of Merovingian and Carolingian historiography, with particular focus on world and universal chronicles. The Chronicon Moissiacense is mainly interesting because of its highly composite nature; it expands on an older, 8th century text that records history up to the year 741 and is a composition of ancient as well as early medieval authors. Bede's 66th chapter of De Temporum Ratione forms the spine of the chronicle, but this text is heavily interpolated with fragments from Flavius Josephus, Eusebius, Jerome, Orosius, Fredegar, the Liber Historiae Francorum, and other sources. The Chronicon Moissiacense presents a continuation of this text up to the year 818, drawing on other sources such as the Annales Laureshamenses, multiple minor annals, and a 'southern source' believed to be lost today. The text attempts to connect Roman with Merovingian and Carolingian history in various ways, such as through the inclusion of a shared Trojan heritage, but also through a reworking of the chronology.Show less

Reael van het Wonderjaar 1566-1567 in Amsterdam. Als rijke koopman en voorman van de protestanten heeft Reael de organisatie van de hagenpreken, de Beeldenstorm en het verloop van de daarop volgende troebelen van dichtbij meegemaakt. Later heeft hij zijn ervaringen beschreven in zijn Gedenkschriften. Aan de hand van dit egodocument wordt er in deze masterthesis gekeken naar zijn ervaringen en hoe Reael hiermee een beeld vormde over het Wonderjaar. Er wordt hierbij gekeken naar de invloed van persoonlijke ervaring van het Wonderjaar, Reael's positie in Amsterdam, zijn omgeving en persoonlijkheid op de beeldvorming in de Gedenkschriften. Dit alles wordt geplaatst in een breed kader, waarbij Reael wordt vergeleken met andere egodocumenten uit de Nederlanden.Show less

The Parsis became very wealthy and influential under British colonial rule and acquired great esteem as a colonial elite. After decolonisation of the British Indies, this picture completely turned upside town and a lot of Parsis left India for a western country such as the UK and the US. Thus, they had to reconstruct their identity both in India and the US and the UK. This thesis examines this double identity reconstruction by means of a combination of literary analysis and discourse analysis.Show less

Al halverwege de zestiende eeuw ontstonden er opvallende ...Show moreHet Deense eiland St. Thomas was gedurende het einde van de achttiende eeuw een belangrijk handelscentrum in het Caribische gebied. Al halverwege de zestiende eeuw ontstonden er opvallende 'Nederlandse' connecties met dit eiland, dankzij een vroege Nederlandse vestiging. Zo werd er gedurende de achttiende eeuw een op het Nederlands gebaseerde creoolse taal gesproken: het Negerhollands. Daarnaast was het eiland gedurende deze eeuw meer 'Hollands' in karakter dan Deens. De ontwikkelingen van de Nederlandse connecties met het Deense eiland St. Thomas zijn echter tot op heden in de literatuur vrijwel onderbelicht gebleven. Deze scriptie gaat in op een aantal connecties tussen enerzijds de Republiek, St. Eustatius en Curacao en anderzijds St. Thomas. Ten eerste bestond er tussen de Republiek en St. Thomas een financiële connectie, in de vorm van plantageleningen, en een bestuurlijke connectie met de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk op het eiland. Ten tweede waren er tussen de Nederlandse eilanden - St. Eustatius en Curaçao - en St. Thomas handels- en migratieconnecties. De terugval van de internationale positie van de Republiek in de achttiende eeuw zorgde ervoor dat de betrekkingen met dit eiland afnamen, terwijl de bloei van de handel op het eiland er juist voor zorgde dat er veel Nederlandse kleurlngen naar het eiland toetrokken.Show less

Als buitenstaander moest hij orde op zaken stellen om de losgeslagen corruptie onder het WIC-personeel de kop in te drukken. Nog geen jaar later was hij dood en begraven. Zijn zware taken, de enorme tegenstand waar hij mee te maken kreeg en het ongezonde klimaat hadden hem de das omgedaan. De mislukte missie van Abraham Houtman geeft een inkijkje in de dagelijkse gang van zaken in de forten van de WIC aan de Goudkust. De Heeren Tien hadden allerlei ideeën over goede bedrijfsvoering, maar de realiteit in Afrika was weerbarstiger dan de plannen van het hoogste bestuursorgaan van de compagnie. Aan de hand van het directeur-generaalschap van Abraham Houtman geeft deze scriptie een beeld van leven en werken van Europeanen in West-Afrika in de jaren '20 van de achttiende eeuw.Show less

In deze...Show moreIn de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw stuurde de Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie drie gezantschappen naar het Chinese hof te Peking in een poging om daar handelsbetrekkingen aan te knopen. In deze scriptie worden de eerste twee van die gezantschappen naast elkaar gelegd. Ook wordt er gekeken naar pogingen van andere Europese landen, in die periode, om via het Keizerlijk hof toegang tot de Chinese markt te krijgen. Er worden twee vragen gesteld;allereerst is de vraag welke tactiek de Nederlanders in China volgden. Kort door de bocht kan gesteld worden dat de VOC twee werkwijzen had in Azië. Aan de ene kant was er de agressieve aanpak die zij in de Indonesische archipel met succes gebruikten tegen staten daar en waarmee ze op veel plekken een handelsmonopolie wisten af te dwingen. Aan de andere kant was er de meegaande aanpak, in Japan, bijvoorbeeld, werden de bevelen van de Shōgun strikt opgevolgd, in de hoop niet te worden uitgezet. De vraag is dus wat zij in China deden. Vervolgens is de vraag of de twee gezantschappen van elkaar leerden en, zo ja, wat er dan aan hun aanpak veranderde.Show less
