What drives the decision of members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to work together, are they working together because they agree on policy principles (ideology) or do they work together because...Show moreWhat drives the decision of members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to work together, are they working together because they agree on policy principles (ideology) or do they work together because they are from the member state or region (geography)? This question is at the core of this paper. By employing a sophisticated and specifically for this paper crafted computer program analysing EP resolutions, I find that ideology becomes less of a factor in the decision to cosponsor a proposal and nationhood becomes more important. This creates difficult questions for European integration.Show less

Er zijn in dat perspectief meerdere studies verschenen. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld onderzocht in welke mate populistische leiders meer afhankelijk zouden zijn van de media, in hoeverre het succes van populistische partijen afhangt van de leider en of populistische partijen en de commerciële media de gemeenschappelijke neiging hebben om de politiek te personaliseren (Bos, Van der Brug en De Vreese 2011; Van Kessel 2011; Akkerman 2011). Op empirisch niveau wordt een relatie verondersteld tussen de verschijnselen populisme en personalisering. Het is echter onduidelijk in welke richting het verband wijst. De politicoloog Krouwel beweert dat “het populisme de trend naar personalisering van de politiek versterkt” (Ten Hooven 2010). Volgens Rob Wijnberg (2010) moet de groei van het populisme juist verklaard worden vanuit “een verregaande personalisering van de politiek.”Show less

As a result of terrorist attacks (9/11, Madrid and London) the EU terrorism policy turned from a counter-terrorism approach, stressing repressive efforts targeting an outside threat, towards a counter-radicalization approach, targeting domestic radicalization processes. Led by the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, the latter approach based itself on a homegrown dimension of terrorism in which identification and resolving underlying causes of radicalization took center stage (Coolsaet 2012, 868). This shift was quite a significant one, since it influenced the traditional sovereignty of member states to deal with these issues themselves (Coolsaet 2012, 689).Show less
Het gebrek aan controle over de economie in Georgië en de vrijwel volledige controle over de binnenlandse economie in Azerbeidzjan is aangedragen als verklarende factor voor het grote verschil in...Show moreHet gebrek aan controle over de economie in Georgië en de vrijwel volledige controle over de binnenlandse economie in Azerbeidzjan is aangedragen als verklarende factor voor het grote verschil in organisatorische macht van de presidenten Shevardnadze (Georgië, 1993-2003) en Aliyev (Azerbeidzjan, 1992-2003). Organisatorische macht is cruciaal voor het bijeenhouden van een politiek regime ten tijde van crisis. Als antwoord op de onderzoeksvraag in dit paper, namelijk hoe het verschil in regimetype in Georgië en Azerbeidzjan door pluralisme in de economie verklaard wordt, wordt het volgende beargumenteerd; een pluralistische economie leidt tot een heterogene elite die ten tijde van regimecrisis eenvoudiger opsplitst dan een homogene elite die kenmerkend is voor een renteniereconomie. Azerbeidzjan heeft een homogene elite waarin organisatorische macht aan de top geconcentreerd is, terwijl de heterogeniteit in de elite in Georgië leidt tot concurrentie op elite-niveau zonder dat er sprake is van democratie.Show less

Kern van dit probleem is het feit dat een bepaalde hoeveelheid mensen op aarde een zekere hoeveelheid fossiele brandstoffen in een rap tempo gebruikt. De totale milieu-impact staat gelijk aan het bevolkingsaantal maal een indicator van de ecologische voetafdruk van de mens (Jones en Jacobs 2006, 428). Om de menselijke bijdrage aan klimaatverandering tegen te gaan is zowel een consumptiereductie als het terugbrengen van de bevolkingsgroei een noodzaak. In dit verband worden er voorspellingen gedaan over de te verwachten grootte van de wereldpopulatie. Hoewel deze voorspellingen uitwijzen dat het groeicijfer dalende is, wordt er verwacht dat er de komende decennia sprake zal blijven van bevolkingsgroei (VN 2010a; Jones en Jacobs 2006, 429).Show less

De...Show moreIn december 2011 braken er in Moskou en een aantal andere grote steden in Rusland grote protesten uit naar aanleiding van vermeende fraude bij de Russische parlementsverkiezingen. De verkiezingsuitslagen zouden zijn vervalst ten gunste van de partij Verenigd Rusland, de zogenaamde machtspartij van toenmalig premier Vladimir Poetin en president Dimitri Medvedev. De demonstranten eisten onder andere nieuwe verkiezingen en het ontslag van het hoofd van het verkiezingscomité, Vladimir Choerov. Al snel keerde het protest zich niet alleen tegen de verkiezingen, maar tegen Verenigd Rusland zelf en Poetin als leidende figuur van de partij. In de daarop volgende maanden werden meer protesten georganiseerd, maar ondanks de grote opkomst en massale media-aandacht werd Poetin in maart 2012 alsnog voor de derde keer in twaalf jaar verkozen tot president. Afgezien van een aantal wijzigingen in de kieswet hebben de protesten tot weinig van de gewenste veranderingen geleid. Dit geringe succes is een interessant onderwerp voor onderzoek.Show less

In een recent onderzoek van Reinemann en Wilke (2007) wordt aangetoond dat in 2002 en 2005 in Duitsland er een sterke toename is van persoonsgerichte verslaglegging in de kranten. Deze toename verklaren zij voor een groot deel door een sterke piek na de kanseliersdebatten. Hier lijkt de televisie directe invloed te hebben op personalisering in de kranten. Deze scriptie toont aan dat dit effect in Nederland niet wordt gevonden in de periode 1971-2012. Hiervoor is een inhoudsanalyse van De Telegraaf gedaan vlak voor en vlak na een televisiedebat. Afgezien van het ontbreken van een korte-termijn effect in de periodes rond de debatten, lijkt er evenmin sprake te zijn van personalisering op lange termijn in de periode 1971-2012. Dit wijkt af van bevindingen uit eerder onderzoek, en maakt duidelijk dat de operationalisering van het concept personalisering bepalend kan zijn voor het wel of niet vinden van een tendens. Wel is er een duidelijke toename van het aantal afbeeldingen van politici te vinden, hetgeen in overeenstemming is met de personaliseringsthese.Show less

However, what is...Show moreWars have substantial consequences for the consolidation of democracy, and have caused demographic, socio-economic and social problems in the countries of the Former Yugoslavia. However, what is striking is that not only has their Europeanization process differed from other Central and Eastern European countries, but also that among them a differentiated form of integration has taken place. On the one hand there are countries like Slovenia, a full EU member state, and Croatia, an acceding country set to join in July 2013, and on the other hand, countries like Serbia, a candidate country, and Bosnia i Herzegovina, a potential candidate, which have a long way to go on the path to membership. What are the reasons for these differences? How can we explain such variation in degrees of EU membership given that these countries were part of the same state a mere twenty-two years ago? What factors explain the quick democratic consolidation and compliance with EU conditionality of some FY states, on one hand, and the fragmented, problematic and generally slow Europeanization process of other FY states on the other? In order to answer these questions, this thesis examines the role of two key factors in determining different degrees of EU membership – the role of ethnicity, and the legacy of civil war in the internal political environment.Show less

Critics charge the facilitation of the Gadaffi regime's overthrow was not justifiable under the United Nations mandate, not justifiable under the prominent 'Responsibility to Protect' norm and may have undermined efforts to resolve the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria. However, it is asserted that in situations where intervention is undertaken to stop atrocities committed by a government, the removal of that regime is necessary in achieving its aims. In exploring this link between humanitarian intervention and regime change, this piece analyses how the academic literature can justify the enactment of regime change in instances of intervention. This relationship otherwise lacks a sustained analysis in the academic literature. Whilst regime change is often difficult to justify in instances of humanitarian intervention, and inevitably controversial, this analysis will demonstrate that it is also often a necessity in achieving an intervention's humanitarian goals.Show less

The research studied the influence on...Show moreThe main aim of this research was to investigate if satirical impersonations on television influence viewers’ evaluations of the impersonated politician. The research studied the influence on overall evaluations and on the evaluations of ten traits (leadership, knowledgeable, intelligent, cares, inspiring, honest, trustworthy, compassionate, arrogant, and moral). A possible moderating effect of political knowledge was studied as well. An experiment was conducted at a high school in the Netherlands using four experimental groups. Three satirical clips of an impersonation of the Dutch Prime-Minister Mark Rutte were used as stimulus material and a clip of the real Mark Rutte was used as control material. Although there was little significant evidence, the evidence did support the expectation that exposure to a satirical impersonation results in lower overall and trait evaluations of Mark Rutte. Like previous research, this research did find trait dimensions as well: integrity and competence. Exposure to a satirical impersonation significantly influenced the ratings of these dimensions. The research did not find a moderating effect of political knowledge.Show less

However, most studies in the field of Europeanization focus only on parliamentary influence in the ex-ante decision...Show moreNational parliaments are often labeled the ‘losers’ of European integration. However, most studies in the field of Europeanization focus only on parliamentary influence in the ex-ante decision-making phase in Brussels. In principle national parliaments have, however also the potential to influence the final outcome of EU policy making in the ex-post phase when EU law is transposed into national law. This role of parliaments has received only limited scholarly attention. Nevertheless, how national parliaments use this opportunity has important practical implications in terms of the EU democratic deficit thesis and the effectiveness of EU law. This thesis tackles the question, to what extent and under what conditions do national parliaments and their committees use their legislative review power to influence the transposition of EU law? A cross-country and cross-directive study in the area of EU migration law is conducted to explore the explanatory power of a prominent coalition model of legislative review. Contrary to the model which assumes that different types of government and levels of coalition conflict determines the scope of parliamentary scrutiny, this analysis finds that other factors are more important determinants for parliamentary influence on the timeliness and correctness of transposition measures. Such factors relate to the overall salience of a directive, high issue linkage with politicized national policy projects and case specific factors. The case studies provide particularly challenging evidence concerning the minister autonomy model on which the coalition model is based. This has important implications for the study on conflict anticipation, as ministers seem to be relatively well prepared to foresee their coalition partner’s preferences and adapt their legal drafts to prevent public coalition conflict in parliament. Secondly in terms of institutional design the analysis shows that even parliaments under unfavorable institutional preconditions and singly party governments are not necessarily weaker in their EU scrutiny activities than those that are assumed to be institutionally strong in the national policy making process.Show less
