The...Show moreThis research provides a comparison and analysis of the economic growth in China and Vietnam with a focus on the environmental aspect so that Vietnam can learn from China's experiences. The research found four key aspects important for environmental-friendly economic growth. The first aspect is environmental policies, which need the right implementation and enforcement to work properly. The second aspect is the energy mix, that needs to be diverse with enough forms of renewable energy. With the share of renewable energy growing in the mix, both the energy demand and the environment will benefit. The third aspect FDI raises the human capital level, which has a positive effect on innovation of production processes and a sustainable economy. Lastly, there is ASEAN which promotes regional cooperation in the field of environmental sustainability, to tackle regional cross-border problems. The right implementation of these four aspects is the key to environmentally friendly growth in Vietnam.Show less

Met behulp van een kwalitatieve discoursanalyse analyseer ik veertien nieuwsartikelen die gerelateerd zijn aan de protesten. Deze zijn afkomstig uit de Xinhua en People’s Daily. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat zowel Xinhua als People’s Daily de protesten als uitsluitend negatief beschouwt door de protesten op een negatieve manier te framen. Verder draagt mijn onderzoek bij aan de literatuur over het gebruik van Chinese nieuwsmedia door de CCP.Show less

The CCP’s 13th five-year plan is analyzed and its key-aspects are presented. The sustainability of China’s economic development according to the CCP, the World Bank and the OECD, Chinese sources, and Western sources is discussed. Seven areas crucial to ensuring the sustainability of China’s economic development, according to the literature, are identified and compared to the key-aspects of the CCP’s 13th five-year plan. This research finds that all of the seven areas deemed crucial to the sustainability of China’s economic development were addressed to a certain extent in the 13th five-year plan.Show less

The pinnacle of...Show moreIn China’s far northwestern region of Xinjiang, the Chinese government and the Muslim Uyghurs are entangled in a conflict that has seen a rise in violence in the last two decades. The pinnacle of this violence were the Urumqi riots, a violent outburst between Uyghurs and Han Chinese during which 197 lost their lives. This thesis researches how the state controlled news agency Xinhua has covered the conflict before and after the Urumqi riots by analysing English language news articles on the conflict and analysing discrepancies by utilizing a ‘discourse analysis’. The results of the research show that Xinhua has taken a more delicate approach to referring to the Uyghur conflict but the underlying focus of ‘cracking down’ on expressions of resistance remain in news coverage on the conflict.Show less

The propaganda of today is represented through media framing and influence not only public opinion, but also promote the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party. However, a worrisome trend has surfaced, namely the use of sensationalism by the state-owned media to frame political events. Even though many studies have shown interest in the media organs of the Chinese government, few studies have focused on the effect it has on Sino-Japanese relations and none have done a thorough media analysis focusing on China’s side. In addition, not much research has been conducted in examining Japanese Prime Shinzo Abe in the Chinese media. This thesis therefore examines two contrasting media reactions in response to Japanese Prime Minister Abe’s behavior, namely the exaggerated negative coverage in 2015 and the subsequent sudden positive coverage in 2017. The main method used in this thesis is the appliance of qualitative frame analysis on selected state-owned media newspaper articles. This will not only observe the framing the Chinese government does, but will also present China’s state-owned media as highly unpredictable. This thesis concludes that the negative frame of 2015 changed by the end of 2017 to a more positive frame of Abe. The Chinese public responded accordingly to this, having a worse view on Japan in 2015, but a better view by the end of 2017. The state-owned Chinese media, therefore, still serve as powerful tools of propaganda for the CCP.Show less

De auteur beantwoordt de vraag in hoeverre de Olympische Spelen hebben geleid tot een nalatenschap (legacy) op milieukundig, economisch en stedenbouwkundig gebied. Door een raamwerk voor het in kaart te brengen van nalatenschap toe te passen op de literatuur over dit onderwerp, concludeert de auteur dat de Olympische Spelen in Beijing hebben bijgedragen aan een versnelde verbetering van het milieu en van de infrastructuur. Daarnaast hebben de Spelen gezorgd voor de bouw van accommodaties, waarvan een deel nog wordt gebruikt, een deel niet meer wordt gebruikt en een ander deel opnieuw kan worden gebruikt voor de aankomende Olympische Spelen in 2022. Tot slot hebben de Spelen gezorgd voor nieuwe woningen door de bouw van het Olympische Dorp én hebben ze niet geleid tot een schuldenlast, ondanks het feit dat ze niet hebben bijgedragen aan een groei van het toerisme; voor andere steden die de Spelen hebben georganiseerd heeft dat tot problemen geleid.Show less

Er is nooit sprake geweest van een rijke traditie van seks in Chinese films. In dit eindwerkstuk komen twee films aan de orde die juist wel veel expliciete seksscènes bevatten: Lust, Caution (2007) en Summer Palace (2006). Deze scènes worden uitvoerig beschreven en geanalyseerd om de vraag te beantwoorden of ze vooral bedoeld zijn om het publiek te vermaken en choqueren of dat ze een belangrijke functie vervullen in het verhaal van de films. Daarnaast wordt gekeken of de films passen in een traditie van vrije seksuele moraal in China.Show less

However, in Cantonese this suffix is rarely used. This paper seeks to explain the discrepancy between these two Sinitic languages in the usage of this suffix. In the existing literature this discrepancy is often attributed to homophony: since homophony isn't as frequent in Cantonese as in Mandarin, the suffix -zi isn't necessary. However, in this paper I argue that homophony is not only a problem in Mandarin, but in Cantonese as well. Therefore both languages require a different method of disambiguation. In Mandarin this is done by affixation, of which the suffix -zi is one example, and in Cantonese this is done by an elaborate system of classifiers. These different methods of disambiguation explain the discrepancy in the usage of -zi.Show less
