This thesis argues that colonial penal practice is different compared to the penal practice in the metropole in various aspects. Using various primary sources, this thesis identifies these differences in five fields: the legal codex, the persons directly involved in the event, the location of execution, the procedure of execution, and the spectators at the event. The thesis seeks to find the extent of the use of violent measures in colonial penal practice resembles that in the metropole and to what extent does it differ.Show less

This study traces the problems colonial administrators, soldiers, settlers and slaves faced in making grave decisions based on imperfect and potentially false information. The rumor-laden nature of Pernambuco's oral communication sphere, this thesis argues, contributed decisively to the outbreak of the revolt in 1645 and continued to have an impact on the course of the war, most notably in inciting people to switch sides.Show less

Sleeping sickness was an inevitably fatal disease endemic...Show moreThis thesis analyses missionary reactions to the sleeping sickness epidemic that haunted East and Central Africa in the early 20th century. Sleeping sickness was an inevitably fatal disease endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa. In focusing on the German protestant Bethel Mission and the French catholic White Fathers mission, this thesis argues that missionaries had distinct approaches towards sleeping sickness and that the disease was less prevalent in the African Great Lakes Region than previously assumed. Past scholarship on sleeping sickness has relied almost exclusively on the Belgian, German, and British colonial states’ archives. Sleeping sickness threatened these states’ claim to power and consequently induced profound colonial anxieties. Missionaries, instead, were less anxious in light of sleeping sickness. Missionary medicine and missionary mobility regimes aided the Bethel Mission and the White Fathers to cope better with the epidemic. Their archives offer an alternative to colonial archives that does not conflate the disease, and also acknowledges that vast areas in the African Great Lakes Region were free of sleeping sickness. The disease was one among many diseases the missionaries and their communities faced. The missionary sources this thesis relies on suggest that scholarship on sleeping sickness reflects a colonial imaginary rather than the lived reality of non-colonial individuals in the African Great Lakes Region.Show less

Against...Show moreHistorians of the late pre-colonial Indian political and military landscape have often pointed to the prevalence of self-interested pragmatism, intrigue and shifting allegiances within it. Against this backdrop, this thesis examines a prominent, yet understudied, military and political player within late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century India, Amir Khan of Tonk, through the lens of martial honour. This is done through analysis of both his career and memoirs, the Amirnama, in which he is represented as one “whose conduct and character within and without were clear as the spotless sun”. Following the Amirnama’s account of the four main stages of his career, whilst also cross-referencing with other relevant contemporary sources, reveals the complex and manifold relation of theoretical ideals of martial honour with the realities of political and military action within his world. During the early stages of his career, cultivating a reputation for bravery and clemency on the battlefield facilitated his social climbing, enhancing “his fame and rank” and forging valuable alliances. Yet increasingly, a gulf appeared between the rhetoric and reality. Whilst honour could legitimise political action, it also contrasted sharply with the flexibility of allegiance, use of deception and even murder increasingly deployed by Amir Khan to achieve his ambitions and strategic aims. Ultimately, securing his political survival in the face of encroaching British power would necessitate jettisoning a plethora of social obligations to those with whom he was theoretically “honour-bound”. Examining Amir Khan’s self-fashioning in the Amirnama in light of these controversial acts reveals how the gap between the theoreticals of martial honour and the murkier realities of realpolitik pragmatism could be, at least rhetorically, reconciled.Show less

Deze termen zijn de basis geworden voor de drie hoofdstukken in dit onderzoek. It studies the political and economic position of these planters and the changes it had to go through after the transfer of sovereignty, in the light of the ongoing New Guinea conflict between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The study argues that the Dutch planters had trouble with adjusting to the new political and social situation, which was hardened by the political relationship between the former colonizer and colonized.Show less

Aan...Show moreWat voor soort relatie hadden de Nederlanders, met de Compagnie in het bijzonder, met de machtige confederatie Ashanti in het binnenland van de Goudkust? Dat is de hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek. Aan de hand van uitgebreid literatuur- en archiefonderzoek zal worden gepoogd een label te plakken op deze relatie. De focus zal daarbij liggen op de periode 1750-1772; een tijdvak van veel oorlogen in het binnenland, met blokkades van de handelswegen tot gevolgen. De mogelijke labels zijn geformuleerd op basis van politicologische concepten van relaties tussen verschillende volken of staten. Harvey Feinberg, historicus op het gebied van Afrika, heeft deze concepten eerder gebruikt om de relatie tussen de Nederlanders op de Goudkust en de inwoners van Elmina te kunnen duiden. Deze concepten blijken echter ook bruikbaar om de relatie tussen de Nederlanders en Ashanti te verklaren. Op basis van het descriptieve en analytische hoofdstuk kan worden vastgesteld dat hier sprake was van het politicologische concept dependent-independent, hoewel zo’n label nooit helemaal sluitend kan zijn. Hierin spraken zij af om in het kader van de dekolonisatie...Show moreIn november 1946 sloten de Nederlands-Indische overheid en de door Soekarno uitgeroepen Republiek Indonesië het Akkoord van Linggadjati. Hierin spraken zij af om in het kader van de dekolonisatie Indonesië om te vormen naar een federatief verband. Deze federatie zou bestaan uit vier deelstaten: Sumatra, de Republiek, Borneo en Oost-Indonesië. De meest concrete uitvoering van het federale stelsel vond plaats in Oost-Indonesië. In de historische beschouwingen over de dekolonisatie is echter de meeste aandacht uitgegaan naar de interacties tussen de Nederlands-Indische overheid en de Republiek op Java. Vanwege de nauwe focus op de Republiek zijn de politieke processen binnen de deelstaat Oost-Indonesië nauwelijks onderzocht, waardoor de deelstaat Oost-Indonesië vaak beschouwd als niets meer dan sneer richting de Republiek, als troefkaart op de onderhandeltafel, of in het ergste geval als een Nederlandse marionettenstaat. Deze gangbare beschouwingen gaan echter voorbij aan de oprechte poging tot dekolonisatie in Oost-Indonesië. Door de focus te leggen op de Nederlandse bestuursambtenaren en hun Indonesische collega’s ter plaatse ontstaat een nieuw beeld over de werkzaamheden die verricht werden omtrent federalisering en dekolonisatie in de deelstaat Oost-Indonesië. De conclusie van dit onderzoek luidt dat tussen 1946 en 1949 Nederlandse bestuursambtenaren een nieuw politiek systeem poogden op te zetten waarin er daadwerkelijk sprake was van een oprechte poging tot dekolonisatie, en waarbij steeds meer bestuurstaken overgingen op het Indonesische bestuur.Show less

Hoewel volgens historici De Laets ‘religieuze’ jaren duurden tot en met de oprichting van de WIC, laat dit onderzoek zien dat in zijn ‘zakelijke’ jaren zijn geloof zich wel degelijk laat zien. Hoewel hij geen theologische boeken meer schrijft, is zijn religie wel degelijk te zien in zijn werk voor de WIC en in zijn boeken het Iaerlyck Verhael en de Nieuwe Wereldt.Show less
