The thesis argues that whilst portraying progressive gender roles on a superficial level, at its core, the comic book reproduces conservative gender ideology as a part of Revolutionary Nationalism.Show less

Since the Percy Commission in 1957 in England, and the Commission of Inquiry into Mental Illness in 1966 in Ireland, both countries have strived to modernise and improve the quality of their mental healthcare systems. Despite this, they have experienced several shortfalls surrounding funding, staffing and community care amongst other issues. As a result of these problems, both countries have some of the highest rates of mental illness in Europe, with 18.5 percent of Irish people and 17.7 percent of English people experiencing at least one mental illness. While both England and Ireland inherited a similar system based around asylums and a focus on long-term institutionalisation the outcomes for the respective countries were vastly different. Additionally, both countries have moved towards a community-based approach in the hope to rehabilitate and reintegrate patients into the community. Though, England has seen lower rates of hospitalisation and shorter hospital stays for mental illness than in Ireland, as well as historically having lower rates of mental illness. However, since the 1990s, English rates of mental illness have been increasing gradually. As a result, English rates of mental illness are nearly that of Ireland. By discussing the historic developments in mental healthcare in the two countries and issues around welfare and healthcare, the causes for this discrepancy as well as the recent increases in the rate of mental illness can hopefully be explained.Show less

Eén van de meest beruchte Nederlandse geweldsontsporingen in deze periode is het...Show moreNederlandse oorlogsmisdaden tijdens de oorlog in Indonesië tussen 1945 en 1950 zijn al decennia een heet hangijzer. Eén van de meest beruchte Nederlandse geweldsontsporingen in deze periode is het bloedbad van Rawagede, een massa-executie in een dorp gelegen in West-Java. Rawagede speelde een belangrijke rol in het publieke debat over Nederlandse oorlogsmisdaden. Zo stelde de rechtbank Den Haag in 2011 de Nederlandse staat aansprakelijk voor de gruweldaden in de Javaanse kampong. Dit was de eerste keer dat de Nederlandse staat wettelijk aansprakelijk werd gesteld voor misstanden tijdens de oorlog met Indonesië. Wat er precies gebeurd is in Rawagede is echter nog steeds onduidelijk. Volgens eerdere onderzoeken naar het bloedbad maakte de Nederlandse krijgsmacht tussen de 150 en 433 slachtoffers. Van dit aantal zouden er tussen de 20 en 120 zijn geëxecuteerd. Vrouwen en kinderen werden gespaard. Alhoewel Rawagede frequent het onderwerp is geweest van academisch onderzoek, geldt dat niet voor de verantwoordelijke eenheid. Dit was het 3e Bataljon 9e Regiment Infanterie, kortgezegd 3-9 RI, een dienstplichtig landmachtbataljon van de 7 December Divisie. Dit onderzoek bestudeert in hoeverre extreem geweld – los van de casus Rawagede – deel uitmaakte van het militair optreden van 3-9 RI in Indonesië.Show less

I argue, using mainly newspaper reports as a representation of popular currents of thought among the growing literate classes, that the prominent suicides of foreign secretary Lord Castlereagh and other politicians in the Regency Period constituted a suicide ‘cluster’ which provoked imitators and a heightened anxiety over the issue. Further, that this suicide crisis, responding to charges of élite hypocrisy and building on shifts in language initiated by the Romantic Movement, and in opposition to perceived secularist and evangelical threats, helped to generate a new code of social mores. This code was a retrenchment of traditional Christian morals for a new bourgeois and scientific age; it was, in short, the birth of Victorian middle-class morality.Show less

Enerzijds een 'oriëntale' minderheid, anderzijds waren Armenen sterk verstedelijkt en actief in niet-agrarische beroepen als koopman, industrieel en zakenman. Volgens enkele historici, onder andere G.R. Suny, vormden deze Armenen van Tbilisi in het late Russische keizerrijk (2e helft 19e eeuw) een bourgeoisie. De vraag is of de Armenen dit waren, aangezien de algemene historiografische aanname is dat tsaristisch Rusland geen middenklasse, bourgeoisie of burgerij had. In dit onderzoek wordt gekeken naar de ontwikkelingen in de Russische geschiedenis die geleid hebben tot de af- of aanwezigheid van een burgerij. Daarnaast is het de vraag of de Armenen zichzelf als burgers zagen en burgerzin of burgerschap toonden. Ten slotte wordt naar de activiteiten van de Armenen die actief waren in het stadsbestuur van Tiblisi door middel van een bronnenonderzoek. Aan de hand van primaire (Russischtalige) bronnen uit Tbilisi in het laatste kwart van de 19e eeuw wordt gezocht naar aanwijzingen voor burgerschap en wordt getracht een beeld te scheppen van Tbilisi in die tijd.Show less

The famine was a culmination of different factors, but most notably it was the result of deliberate policies of the Soviet government. In the summer of 1933 a young Welsh journalist named Gareth Jones illegally toured the Ukrainian countryside, witnessing the dead and the dying, walking through the silent and abandoned villages and speaking with the starving peasants. Upon his return to the United Kingdom Jones attempted to expose the famine in order to aid the starving Ukrainian population. However, his message had little impact. It was snowed under by positive reports coming from Western correspondents stationed in Moscow. The news of the famine failed to gain traction amongst the public, and before long people forgot that it ever happened. This thesis seeks to investigate why Jones’ articles exposing the Ukrainian famine in 1933 had so little impact amongst the British and American public. There was no public outrage, no large-scale famine relief actions, and not a sound from the British and American governments on the matter could be heard. The silence surrounding the famine was deafening, and the voice that was trying to attract attention to it was ignored. Why were people so willing to look away? Can this silence be attributed to a feat of Soviet Propaganda? Were the reports coming from Moscow simply more credible than the reporting of twenty-seven years old Jones?Show less

The focus of this thesis is on the role of the Dutch national identity in the perceptions and experiences of a wide array of Dutch Spainfighters, who volunteered to fight on the Republican side in...Show moreThe focus of this thesis is on the role of the Dutch national identity in the perceptions and experiences of a wide array of Dutch Spainfighters, who volunteered to fight on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. It aims to understand how the volunteers dealt with the potential for clashes between the imagined communities of the Dutch nation-state and the border transcending, transnational appeal of their left-wing ideology. This thesis demonstrates that they felt loyalty both to the transnational community of left-wing and communist sympathizers, and the national Dutch community. It argues that the motivation of the Spainfighters is closely linked to their national identity, which they tried to construct in symbiosis with their transnational thoughts via the message of anti-fascism. As such, the thesis adds to the understanding of the phenomenon of foreign fighters. Next to the conscious building of national identity, national sentiments and practical culture played a considerable role in the daily reality of the Spainfighters, which is especially relevant if the rather mythical image of the International Brigades as a classic example of a transnational army is taken into account. As the case of the Dutch Spainfighters illustrates, the International Brigades provided space and even recognition for national identity as an organizing entity and as such functioned more as an ideologically motivated international army. For this reason, this thesis suggests that the fundaments of the supposedly transnational movement of support to the Spanish Republic may partly be built on national tensions and the resulting compromises. While studying transnational movements in the twentieth century, it therefore may be worth the effort to analyze the role of national identity, of national political culture.Show less

Throughout the 50s, the Philips family played a major role in facilitating the American organization in the Netherlands, propagating Cold War rhetoric in politics, culture and industry. What in historiography has been called a 'postwar consensus', a period of a supposed 'ideological vacuum' and labour harmony, is problematized by the activity in the Netherlands of this highly ideological network of international industrialists. This thesis tries to research how the Moral Rearmament politicized the fundaments of the 'postwar consensus' by various tactics, and simultaneously traces the dissemination of its political ideas in Dutch society and key industries.Show less

The allocation of a hazardous landfill to the county...Show moreIn the autumn of 1982, a relatively small and rural county in North Carolina called Warren County started the environmental justice movement. The allocation of a hazardous landfill to the county sparked this start. Residents argued that the landfill was only allocated to Warren County because the county was predominantly African American and poor. Protesters said that the authorities did not expect African American and poor people to have the political clout to significantly rebel against the construction of the landfill. Yet both African American and white residents strikingly did rise up together in a direct-action protest of roughly four weeks. Only a few years prior, both of those races had still lived segregated in North Carolina with their separate environmental struggles. Now, they were protesting together for an environmental concern. How did this unity come about? This study aims to provide a part of an answer to that question by focusing on how identity-rhetoric generated unity among African American and white people in Warren County. It concludes that two core narratives of race and class as well as the identity issues religion, public health, and the relation between governing authorities and citizens generated a sense of unity that incorporated all people of Warren County and even beyond.Show less
Herman Schaepman (1844-1903)was een belangrijke katholieke priester en politicus die in de verzuilde, katholieke historiografie een plaats als wegbereider en emancipator van zijn geloofsgenoten...Show moreHerman Schaepman (1844-1903)was een belangrijke katholieke priester en politicus die in de verzuilde, katholieke historiografie een plaats als wegbereider en emancipator van zijn geloofsgenoten kreeg toebedeeld. Tegelijk stelden al kort na zijn overlijden de eerste (katholieke) auteurs vast dat hij een bron was 'van tegenspraak' binnen eigen kring. Maar hoe hij nu tegelijkertijd doorgaan als controversieel politicus en leider en (zelfs) stichter van een 'katholieke partij'. Die paradox is onderzocht door zijn handelingen in de Tweede Kamer vanaf zijn intrede (1880) tot aan het tot stand komen van het kabinet Mackay te onderzoeken (1888). Dat door Jan Romein zelfs 'Schaepmans ministerie' werd genoemd. Alhoewel Schaepman voor zijn intrede in de politiek naam maakte in katholieke kring als onderwijzer aan het Groot-seminarie te Rijsenburg, dichter en journalist en goede relaties onderhield met vooraanstaande katholieke notabelen, vaarde hij in de Kamer al snel zijn eigen koers. Alhoewel partijdiscipline en afstemming intertijd - zelfs bij de ARP-fractie - zeer gebrekkig bleek, bleek Schaepman ook een warm pleitbezorger van kiesrechtuitbreiding en herziening van de grondwet. Toch raakte hij niet volledig geisoleerd. Hij bouwde een belangrijke samenwerking op met de antirevolutionairen en dan met name met Johnkheer A.F. de Savornin Lohman (1837-1924), die een jaar eerder dan Schaepman toetrad tot de Tweede Kamer en binnen zijn partij snel een leidende rol wist op te eisen. Er ontstond een 'as' tussen beiden, wat ook blijkt uit de correspentie tussen beiden. Beiden konden door die samenwerking zetels winnen in gemengde districten en parlementaire overwinningen behalen ten opzichte van de liberale meerderheid. In 1885 lukte het om de katholieken en antirevolutionairen in de Kamer een gesloten front te laten vormen rondom het onderwijs. Beiden zouden een door de liberalen gewenste grondwetsherziening niet toestaan tenzij ook op het punt van het onderwijs de grondwet gewijzigd zou worden. Dat versterkte de positie van Lohman en Schaepman, deed het geloof in onderlinge samenwerking bij hun achterban en maakte na de gronwetswijzigingen (en nieuwe verkiezingen) de weg vrij voor het eerste coalitiekabinet van het land tussen antirevolutionairen en katholieken. Hoewel het kabinet binnen twee jaar in moeilijkheden kwam en uiteindelijk viel, was het hen wel gelukt om een redelijk geleidelijke kiesrechtuitbreiding tot stand te brengen, een kabinet mogelijk te maken en door hen gewenste stappen te zetten op het terrein van het lager onderwijs. De Schaepman-paradox blijkt een echte: de tegenstelling tussen controverse en het scheppen van draagvlak is in dit geval grotendeels schijnbaar gebleken.Show less

De Groot koos voor een autonome koers, dit was een nieuwe wending in de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse communistische partij. Eén persoon uit het dagelijks bestuur ging hier niet in mee en bleef trouw aan de Sovjet-Unie: Friedel Baruch. Friedel Baruch stond niet achter deze interpretatie van ‘het principe van autonomie’ waar de CPN zich op beriep en beschuldigde de partij van antisovjetisme. Volgens Baruch is ‘het wezen van een communistische partij haar verbondenheid met de wereldbeweging van het communisme en de CPN-leiding heeft er mee gebroken. ‘Een afzonderlijk “Nederlands” Marxisme-Leninisme bestaat zomin als een afzonderlijk Russisch of Chinees Marxisme-Leninisme bestaat, - het is een contradictio in terminis.’ Een antwoord op de vraag waarom Baruch een oppositie vormde lijkt misschien zo gegeven; Baruch geloofde niet in een nationale vorm van communisme, de eigen weg bestond volgens hem niet omdat het communisme een internationalistische ideologie is. Dit onderzoek gaat verder en richt zich vooral op de politieke cultuur van de CPN. Want na wat meer onderzoek blijkt dat er veel meer aan de hand was dan een theoretisch meningsverschil en dat het meningsverschil al snel uitliep op een politieke karaktermoord. Om antwoord te geven op de vraag waarom het conflict de vorm aannam die het deed moet er worden gekeken naar de politieke cultuur van de CPN. Daarom is de hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek: wat kunnen we leren over de politieke cultuur van de CPN aan de hand van de kwestie Baruch?Show less
