Tegen de achtergrond van een democratiserende maatschappij bleef het corps diplomatique lange tijd een bastion van adel en patriciaat, waarbij een belangrijke brugfunctie was weggelegd voor corporale studentenverenigingen. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begint een decennialange transformatie, waarbij het aristocratische karakter van de diplomatie geleidelijk aan plaatsmaakt voor een meer bureaucratische bedrijfscultuur.Show less

This thesis illustrates the existence of a wide array of continuities in three layers of territorial identification – local, regional, and national – inherent in the city’s festive culture and divides this process into three categories: community building, ascribed commonalities, and feelings of belonging. The interaction between layers of identification provided a sustainable foundation for identity, which could overcome major upheavals like the First World War and the fall of the Habsburg Empire. In addition to interpreting these layers as nested identities, this thesis explores the importance of rhythms as a source for continuity in daily life. Preserving traditions and customs in practices often outweighed other considerations, such as displaying political views, in organizing local festivities. The repetition of a set of practices transcended party lines and shows that Social Democrats, Christian Socials, and German Nationalists all valued the use of these practices, albeit using them to create different territorially bounded narratives. Finally, this thesis argues that an overemphasis on capitals and crises in historiography has created a distorted view of this period and, consequently, advocates a new focus on localities, regions and stability.Show less

On one hand it has been portrayed as a bitter and savage conflict, while on the other, one in which the fighting was exaggerated and overstated. This paper uses a study of the Irish Civil War in the geographical unit of County Kerry to argue that this confusing dichotomy has existed because of the absence of any systematic analysis of that most elemental factor in any armed conflict, the actual violence. Using a micro-level analysis of the violent deaths of National Army soldiers and IRA men in Kerry during the conflict this paper argues that the IRA prosecuted the war using controversial and contentious tactics while a culture of indiscipline in the National Army saw it engage in reprisals and extra-judicial killings as its main means of asserting control.Show less

Premier Schermerhorn en met name regeringscommissaris van de RVD Hendrik Brugmans waren vaak op de radio te horen. Vanuit de Tweede Kamer, de dagbladpers en de ministeriële departementen ontstond al snel weerstand tegen de toespraken, onder andere omdat het maanden duurde voordat een officieel noodparlement was ingesteld en omdat de dagbladpers kampte met een tekort aan papier. Tijdens het Kamerdebat van 31 januari 1946 kreeg Schermerhorn hevige kritiek te verduren op het beleid omtrent de radiotoespraken. Dit had grote gevolgen voor het gehele voorlichtingsbeleid van de regering. Dit onderzoek gaat over wat er precies gezegd werd in de radiotoespraken. Het doel is om beter te kunnen verklaren waarom de weerstand tegen het radiogebruik van het kabinet zo groot was.Show less

This is a research on how Tvardovsky, who had loyally supported Stalin during his regime but later became an important actor in the destalinization, was able to come to terms with having supported Stalin’s system of terror. By analysing primary sources like his Working Notebooks, autobiographical poems and his brother’s autobiography, and by analysing his documented behaviour both during Stalin’s regime and after, this thesis will portray how Tvardovsky dealt with the aftermath of Stalin’s terror. In doing so, this research will make use of Hellbeck’s theory regarding writers’ loyalty to the regime despite state violence and the theory of the heroisation-demonisation phenomenon in mass dictatorships. This thesis aims to shed more light on how Soviet citizens adjusted during the Thaw.Show less

De wetenschappelijke...Show moreTijdens de afgelopen drie jaar is door verschillende historici en politici stilgestaan bij het honderdjarig jubileum van de invoering van het algemeen kiesrecht in Nederland. De wetenschappelijke werken die historici schreven en de politieke redes die politici uitspraken in deze drie jaar waren veelal beperkt tot de parlementaire strijd. Deze scriptie zoomt in op de buitenparlementaire strijd om het kiesrecht, waarbij de sociale beweging, het actierepertoire en de expliciete en impliciete doelen centraal staan. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat verschillende sociale en economische doelen niet minder belangrijk werden gevonden dan de politieke doelen waar de parlementaire strijd zich tot beperkte. Deze doelen, waaronder economische gelijkheid, sociale zekerheid en een altruïstische maatschappij, werden na de invoering van het algemeen kiesrecht niet bereikt. De parlementaire strijd werd in 1919 gewonnen, terwijl de strijd van de sociale beweging nog altijd een lopend project is.Show less

Though this process only became widespread...Show moreThe United States is currently in the process of replacing many of its traditional public schools with semi-private institutions called charter schools. Though this process only became widespread within the last few decades, its origins are rooted in the political turmoil that occurred during the American Civil Rights movement more than 50 years ago. By implementing critical race theory, this study investigates the relationship between long standing racism and the push to privatize U.S. public schools by using the New Orleans public school system as a focal point. Court documents, historical accounts, interviews, era specific newspaper articles and prior research into the field are all used to accomplish this aim. Analyzing these materials illustrates how current arguments in favor of privatization were born out of white resistance to racially integrated public schools in the mid-20th century, and still echo the talking points used during the Civil Rights era to challenge forced integration. Based on these analyses, this study concludes that the American charter school movement is poorly regulated, racially biased, and creates classroom inequality in New Orleans, and throughout the United States.Show less

It’s ill-treatment of the vulnerable citizens who were in the care of religious institutions has been increasingly public since the early 1990s and includes women in Magdalen laundries and those in mother and baby homes amongst other victims. How these scandals were addressed by Irish newspapers following the pivotal points from 1990 to the present day and the impact of this on the secularisation of Ireland are addressed in this paper.Show less

Since the early days of Kennedy’s administration, a complex relationship between the West Germany and the US is distinguishable. It could be said that West Germany became the locomotive of implication of US policy in Europe. Kennedy used Germany’s question towards West’s favor. The FRG not only became a representative of American policy and American thinking but also played the role of the mediator amongst European nations which at the time were not as synchronized and responsive as they should towards the new situation, regarding European and national security and safety. Aan de hand van verschillende politieke...Show moreHet gewoonterecht vormde het normatieve uitgangspunt van de Nederlandse conservatieven in hun oppositie tegen het Thorbeckeaanse liberalisme. Aan de hand van verschillende politieke conflictmomenten wordt in deze scriptie getoond hoe dit uitgangspunt zodanig werd uitgewerkt en verfijnd dat het een verregaande ‘democratisering’ van de conservatieve standpunten mogelijk maakte. Essentieel was daarbij dat in de historische rechtsopvatting van de conservatieven het recht onderdeel was van de cultuur en daarom aan moest sluiten bij de opvattingen en behoeften van het volk. De politiek moest in de conservatieve optiek daarom ook rekening houden met de opvattingen van het volk. In de loop van de in deze scriptie beschreven periode (1850-1869) kreeg het volk daarbij een steeds actievere rol toebedeeld, wat in 1869 uitmondde in het amendement-Heemskerk, waarin de conservatieven onder leiding van Jan Heemskerk Azn. voor het eerst een significante uitbreiding van het kiesrecht bepleitten.Show less
