In this paper, it is analyzed how the two main factors of conditional sentences, particles and verbal forms, combine to add modal nuances to the conditional clause. It becomes clear that not a single factor is responsible for those nuances, but many factors combined. By applying modern linguistic insights in particles and the verbal forms, a new model is proposed.Show less
Catalogues have been a staple library feature for the last several centuries, a useful finding tool for readers and organizational aid for librarians; they are also a representation of a particular...Show moreCatalogues have been a staple library feature for the last several centuries, a useful finding tool for readers and organizational aid for librarians; they are also a representation of a particular place and time. The form and content of a catalogue can provide insights into the social norms and scholarly interests of the era in which it was created. Employing a longitudinal and comparative approach, this thesis examines the published catalogues of Leiden University Library’s Hebrew manuscripts collection throughout its four centuries of existence. I compare these catalogues, mark the differences in the ways they describe Hebrew manuscripts, and illuminate the social changes or emerging scholarly fields that likely influenced their creators. Throughout this thesis, I argue that when it comes to Hebrew manuscripts, any examination of historical cataloguing trends or choices cannot be complete without also considering that era’s societal attitudes toward Jews, the original creators of the language and texts contained in said manuscripts. I conclude that there exists a direct correlation between the quality of the catalogues’ manuscript descriptions and the cataloguer’s knowledge of the Hebrew language and of Jewish literature and culture; I extrapolate the implications of this conclusion for the future of manuscript cataloguing in the digital age.Show less

Especially those features that might tell something about the identity of the people responsible for the production of these documents will be examined in detail. The overall aim is to detect these features and to explain them in light of their cultural background: to what extent do the formal and linguistic features visible in the documentary texts convey elements of conscious choices and unconscious linguistic patterns relating to the identity of the people who wrote these texts and how can these features be explained? It will be attempted to answer this general question through two key-objectives: 1. Through determining linguistic features and patterns of language choice in selected case studies. 2. Through explaining these features in light of their cultural-historical background.Show less

Sterker nog, met de opkomst van de sociale media is er altijd wel de gelegenheid een spottende noot...Show moreSpot en satire zijn niet weg te denken uit de grote maatschappelijke debatten van vandaag de dag. Sterker nog, met de opkomst van de sociale media is er altijd wel de gelegenheid een spottende noot toe te voegen. Dit heeft een rol die groter is dan enkel stemmingmakerij: spot kan een sterk regulerende functie hebben en is bij uitstek een uitingsvorm van sociale controle. Als een bepaalde visie of eigenschap belachelijk wordt gemaakt, draagt men die visie of eigenschap niet graag uit in de publieke sfeer en worden er sociaal-culturele grenzen gecreëerd. Dit geldt ook voor de wereld van het oude Israël. Deze scriptie schept duidelijkheid over de rol van spot bij een centraal thema in de Hebreeuwse Bijbel, namelijk de strijd tussen Ba‘al en YHWH. Grote delen van het Oude Testament hebben te maken met de verhoudingen tussen de God van Israël en deze Ba‘al, die een belangrijke concurrent blijft tot het einde van de monarchie. Waar veel onderzoek is gedaan naar de toedracht, ontwikkeling en historiciteit van deze religieuze strijd, is er relatief minder aandacht besteed aan de rol van spot in de afwijzing van Ba‘al door de Yahwistische elite. Deze scriptie benadert literaire elementen uit de Hebreeuwse Bijbel niet enkel als historiografische documenten, maar vooral als literaire composities die gebruikt worden als een wapen in deze culturele strijd. Zo wordt de volgende vraag beantwoord: Op welke manieren wordt er in de Hebreeuwse Bijbel gebruik gemaakt van literaire spot met Ba‘al, en welke rol speelt die spot binnen de religieuze strijd tussen YHWH en Ba‘al?Show less
