This paper explores the intricate relationship between disgust and visual attention, employing the eye-tracking method. Drawing insights from primate studies, habituation, and human facial expressions, the research aims to address three key questions: Does gaze aversion occur in humans when exposed to disgusting stimuli, extending avoidance behavior into the visual domain? Do individuals exhibit prolonged attention to facial area, indicating a social imperative to assess the risk of pathogen contamination? How does gaze aversion change with repeated exposure to disgust-inducing stimuli? The study employs three conditions, including scenes of feces ingestion in the test condition, to assess total looking time. Results reveal significant gaze aversion towards feces as compared to control conditions, supporting the hypothesis of avoidance behavior. Participants displayed prolonged attention to faces during non-disgusting conditions, challenging assumptions about social necessity for risk assessment. Repeated exposure across trials to disgust-inducing stimuli did not significantly alter gaze behavior, highlighting the nuanced nature of responses to aversive stimuli. Discussion of the findings and implications are also addressed.Show less

Attractiveness, dominance and social connections are considered of high value for survival. Dominance can be expressed through aggressive behaviour, while forming social connections can be expressed through grooming. These types of behaviour are contradicting to each other, yet both considered of great value for survival. Through an eye-tracking study we investigated the attentional bias towards either the initiator of aggressive behaviour (aggressor) or the recipient of aggressive behaviour (victim), as well as the attentional behaviour towards either the more dominant (groomee) or the more submissive (groomer) individual during grooming behaviour. Participants were presented with videos followed by corresponding still frames of aggressive (aggressor vs. victim) and grooming (groomer vs. groomee) interactions. Eye-tracking data was collected during the presentation of the still frame in the form of total looking time towards either of the individuals shown in the still frames. The results suggest that humans have an attentional bias towards the aggressor instead of the victim and have an attentional bias towards the groomee compared to the groomer. Both findings suggest that the more dominant person is considered of higher value for survival. Potential explanations and potential future researches are discussed in this paper.Show less

This cognate effect has been...Show moreBilingual adults are faster at reading cognates than non-cognates in both their first (L1) (Van Assche et al., 2009) and second language (L2) (Duyck et al., 2007). This cognate effect has been shown to be gradual in the L1: recognition was facilitated when words had higher degrees of cross-lingual similarity (Van Assche et al., 2009). Many studies on bilingual language processing have used this effect to indicate a co-activation of lexical representations in two languages. Recent research has shown that the gradual cognate facilitation effect can also be found in bilingual children’s receptive vocabulary (Bosma et al., 2016). However, it is still unknown to what extent it can be found in bilingual children’s reading. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether cognate facilitation can also be observed in bilingual children’s reading. To answer this question, Frisian-Dutch bilinguals (n = 18) between 9 and 12 years old performed a reading task in both of their languages. All children had Dutch as their dominant reading language, but most of them spoke mainly Frisian at home. Identical cognates (e.g., boek-boek ‘book’), non-identical cognates (e.g., beam-boom ‘tree’), and non-cognates (e.g., beppe-oma ‘grandmother’) were presented in a sentence context, and eye-movements were recorded. The results showed a non-gradual cognate facilitation effect in Frisian: identical cognates were read faster than non-identical cognates and non-cognates. In Dutch, however, no cognate facilitation effect could be observed. These results show that bilingual children use their dominant reading language when reading in their non-dominant one.Show less

This study delves into the...Show moreMost research on language in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has focussed on social and communicative impairments, whereas grammatical impairments are less explored. This study delves into the syntactical knowledge and processing of passives in children with high-functioning autism (HFA) and aims to answer the research question “Do children and adults with HFA comprehend and process passive sentences differently from typically developing children and adults?” Four groups, comprising children with HFA (N=2; age 8.52-8.75), TD children (N=13; age 6.78-11.07), adults with HFA (N=3, age 23.23-25.92), and TD adults (N=6; age 22.63-29.65) were tested on their processing of passives through reading of a sentence (recorded by an eye-tracker) and comprehension (picture-selection) of long actional passives. Results suggest that children and adults with HFA have a good comprehension of long actional passive sentences, as they perform at ceiling level. The TD adults answered 100% correctly too, and the TD children selected 90.4% of the correct pictures. The eye-tracking results are insufficient to comment on the processing of passive sentences, because the collection of eye-tracking data was unsuccessful. The comprehension results are discussed in comparison to three recent studies on passives in Farsi-, Greek-, and English-speaking children (Heshmati, 2013; Terzi et al. 2014; Perovic, unpublished manuscript). Options for the analysis of complete eye-tracking data and suggestions for further research are discussed.Show less

Onderzocht...Show moreVolgens de taalkundige relativiteitshypothese is het mogelijk dat de taal die iemand spreekt invloed heeft op de manier van denken (Brysbaert et al. 1998: 52-55; Boroditsky 2001: 2). Onderzocht werd of dit ook geldt voor getallen in het Nederlands en Engels, die vanaf het getal 21 een verschillende structuur hebben. Dit verschil in structuur zou er toe kunnen leiden dat Nederlands- en Engelstalige sprekers bij het verwerken van deze getallen de aandacht op verschillende onderdelen van het getal richten. Eerder was er al een effect gevonden in een onderzoek waarin Duits en Engels werden vergeleken (Nuerk et al. 2004). In het huidige onderzoek moesten Engelstaligen en Nederlandstaligen getallen voorlezen, waarbij hun oogbewegingen werden gevolgd. Er werd een klein, maar significant verband effect gevonden tussen moedertaal en de locatie van de eerste fixatie. Dit kan duiden op invloed van moedertaal op het verwerken van getallen.Show less

Hiertoe werden kinderen van groep 4 op verschillende...Show moreHet doel van dit onderzoek was om te achterhalen hoe vaardigheden aangaande begrijpend lezen zwakke en sterke lezers kunnen onderscheiden. Hiertoe werden kinderen van groep 4 op verschillende vaardigheden getest. Tevens werd gekeken naar de oogbewegingen van kinderen tijdens het lezen van teksten. Ook werd onderzocht in hoeverre verschillende instrumenten voor leesvaardigheden hetzelfde meten. Middels een regressie werd gekeken naar de voorspellende waarde van maten van eye-tracking en cognitieve vaardigheden. Er is gebleken dat verschillende instrumenten voor leesvaardigheid niet hetzelfde meten. Bij de zwakke begrijpend lezers waren correlaties met de variabelen woordenschat, luisterbegrip, leeshouding, redeneervaardigheid, het kunnen maken van inferenties en integreren en verhaalbegrip van belang. Bij de sterke begrijpend lezers waren er correlaties met eye-tracking variabelen, woordenschat, luisterbegrip en de leesvaardigheid volgens de maze. Tevens is gebleken dat de sterke begrijpend lezers hoger scoorden op het beantwoorden van vragen die werden gesteld na het eye-tracken, woordenschat, luisterbegrip, leeshouding, redeneervaardigheid, maze, inferenties maken en integreren, werkgeheugen en verhaalbegrip. Bij zwakke lezers voorspelde redeneervaardigheid hun leesvaardigheid. Bij de sterke lezers voorspelden woordenschat en de maze de leesvaardigheid. Zwakke begrijpend lezers ervaren voornamelijk problemen met talige processen waar verbale vaardigheid bij komt kijken. Het probleem lijkt vooral te maken te hebben met het onvoldoende kunnen redeneren en oplossen van problemen. Tevens zijn zwakke lezers onvoldoende vaardig in algemene en onderliggende vaardigheden, waardoor hogere cognitieve processen, waar zij al moeite mee hebben, niet worden ondersteund. De zwakke lezers kunnen niet flexibel en doelbewust te werk gaan. Sterke lezers zijn wel in staat tot het uitvoeren van een scala aan vaardigheden. Sterke lezers kunnen dan ook adaptief te werk gaan en hun leesproces monitoren. Bij sterke lezers is er sprake van een gericht, samenhangend leesproces. Bij de zwakke lezers wordt er aanspraak gemaakt op allerlei vaardigheden, maar wordt dit niet effectief gedaan. Hierdoor ontstaat een leesproces dat niet doeltreffend is en de lezer ervaart begripsproblemen.Show less

Three detailed...Show moreThe present study compared looking behavior of preschoolers at different visual elements in storybook illustrations. Fourteen Dutch children, aged from 4 to 6, were recruited. Three detailed illustrations from a storybook were used, in which areas of interest were created, distinguishing the elements between humanoid and non-humanoid figures, elements highlighted and not highlighted by the oral text, and combinations of the two categories. Children’s eye movements on the illustrations were recorded with an eye-tracking device. For each picture, separate paired-sample t-tests were conducted and results indicated that children integrated the oral text of the story and the illustrations that were accompanying it. Children’s visual attention to the illustrations focuses mostly on humanoid figures that are highlighted by the accompanied text of the storybook. Recommendations for future research and practice implications are discussed.Show less

In...Show moreIn dit onderzoek wordt ingegaan op de rol die gesproken tekst en illustraties spelen bij het verhaalbegrip van vijfjarigen en de rol die werkgeheugen en passieve woordenschat daarbij spelen. In totaal deden 61 kinderen van vijf jaar mee aan het onderzoek, waarvan 31 meisjes en 30 jongens. Er is gebruik gemaakt van een within-subjects design waarbij rekening is gehouden met volgorde-effecten. Visuele aandacht werd gemeten door kinderen drie verschillende illustraties uit boekjes over Doedel te tonen op een remote eye-tracker, waarbij zij geen, een bijbehorende of een conflicterende tekst te horen kregen. Verhaalbegrip werd gemeten door na afloop van deze interventie dezelfde drie illustraties in dezelfde volgorde op een laptop te tonen. Het kind kreeg de opdracht het verhaal bij elke illustratie te vertellen. Het werkgeheugen en het niveau van passieve woordenschat werden voorafgaand aan de interventie getoetst. De tekst die kinderen te horen kregen bij de illustraties speelde een rol bij verhaalbegrip. Het sterkste effect werd gevonden wanneer kinderen de bijbehorende tekst hoorden, hierbij werd het hoogst gescoord op verhaalbegrip. De tekst die kinderen te horen kregen bij de illustraties speelde ook een rol bij visuele aandacht. Er werd het hoogst gescoord op visuele aandacht voor visuele elementen in de illustratie die in de tekst werden genoemd (AOIs), wanneer kinderen de bijbehorende tekst hoorden. Visuele aandacht lijkt dus gestuurd te worden door de tekst die kinderen horen. Uit deze resultaten volgt dat kinderen zowel de tekst als de illustraties gebruiken om een verhaal te begrijpen. Werkgeheugen en passieve woordenschat bleken hierbij geen rol te spelen. Werkgeheugen vertoonde wel een samenhang met verhaalbegrip wanneer kinderen de bijbehorende tekst hoorden.Show less
