Television and other sources of broadcasting play a significant role in the media landscape and in the understanding of the public. The way terrorist incidents are reported and communicated can alter or influence the perception and perspective of the public. An increased understanding of the way the media reports a terrorist incident visually is as vital. The visual side is as important to the understanding as the written text. With the use of a case study, the Paris attacks of the 13th of November 2015, and a theoretical framework by Kress and van Leeuwen (2015) this thesis will attempt to shed light on the way different broadcasts use visuals and what they can potentially do with their viewers. By analyzing 18 videos of three different broadcasters using the qualitative data analysis software Atlas.ti an answer will be formed to the research question. The codes that are applied to videos originate from the framework and account for the pure visual aspects and includes added context codes. First, the broadcast is analysed separately and per dimension the most noteworthy codes are discussed with example. Also, the implications for the viewers will be elaborated. The findings, and thus the answer to the research question, indicate that all three broadcasters utilize visual elements that try to establish a connection between the represented participants in the footage with the viewer. Relying on the closeness of the shots of the victims but also on reactional vectors in narrative processes that try to convey a story and involve the viewer in the situation.Show less

Het is een deductief, kwantitatief...Show moreDeze scriptie onderzoekt de samenhang tussen het gebruik van traditionele en nieuwe media onder Nederlandse burgers en hun vertrouwen in de Nederlandse overheid. Het is een deductief, kwantitatief onderzoek waarin gebruik is gemaakt van secundaire data door drie datasets te combineren van het LISS Core Study, een erkend longitudinaal onderzoek dat een breed scala aan sociale kerninformatie beschikbaar stelt over de Nederlandse LISS panelleden. Door middel van beschrijvend en explorerend onderzoek is er een poging gedaan tot het beantwoorden van de centrale onderzoeksvraag in deze studie: “In hoeverre is er een samenhang tussen het nieuwe mediagebruik onder Nederlandse burgers en hun vertrouwen in de Nederlandse overheid, en in hoeverre verschilt dit met de relatie tussen het traditionele mediagebruik en het vertrouwen van de burger?” De verwachtingen binnen dit onderzoek waren dat er een positief verband zou zijn tussen het traditionele mediagebruik onder Nederlandse burgers en hun vertrouwen in de overheid. Deze hypothese is dan ook aangenomen. Echter moet erbij worden vermeld dat dit onderzoek niet kan uitsluiten dat het gebruik van traditionele media de correlatie veroorzaakt, omdat er ook respondenten tussen zitten die gebruikmaken van zowel traditionele media als nieuwe media voor het verkrijgen van hun nieuws. Verbazingwekkend is er geen significant verband gevonden tussen het aantal gespendeerde uren aan nieuwe media onder Nederlandse burgers en hun vertrouwen in de overheid. Desondanks de kans groter is dat men meer interpretatieve en sensationele berichtgeving tegen kan komen, is er geen verschil gevonden onder burgers die meer of minder tijd online spenderen als het op overheidsvertrouwen aankomt. Al met al is vervolgonderzoek met specifiekere data van belang om daadwerkelijk de effecten te kunnen meten van mediaconsumptie onder Nederlandse burgers op hun vertrouwen in de overheid.Show less
Studies show that during the COVID-19 pandemic, quarantining, lockdowns and a palpable shortage of outdoor activities led to increased media consumption as a means for audiences to keep themselves...Show moreStudies show that during the COVID-19 pandemic, quarantining, lockdowns and a palpable shortage of outdoor activities led to increased media consumption as a means for audiences to keep themselves occupied, as they cope with the psychological consequences of extended periods of social isolation. Not only did the quantity of consumption increase, but the nature in which audiences engaged with media has changed also. For instance, many have started listening to podcasts during the pandemic. This appears indicative not only of a desperation to try new things, but also that new listeners were attempting to mimic social interaction somehow. Para-social interactions, the one-sided interactions between mediated personalities and their audiences, have existed long before the Web 2.0 era of media. This specific development is a hint that audiences were not only increasingly subjected to these interactions, they may have been actively seeking them out. Cum Town, a vulgar podcast featuring three comedians who have basically become niche micro-celebrities, is one such podcast that saw its audience grow during the pandemic. Given the mischievous character of this show, it seems pertinent to ask whether an increase in such interactions is a good thing, as well as what other repercussions come with this type of consumption.Show less

Mensen die binnen de media met inclusief taalgebruik in...Show moreTaal speelt een centrale rol in hoe mensen denken en zich gedragen (Verhaeghe, 2020, p. 5), ook qua discriminatie van LHBTIQ+-personen. Mensen die binnen de media met inclusief taalgebruik in aanraking komen, gaan deze taal vaker zelf gebruiken (Van Poecke et al., 1991, p. 83). Binnen deze scriptie wordt onderzocht hoe de Nederlandse opiniebladen Vrij Nederland, Elsevier Weekblad, De Groene Amsterdammer, HP/De Tijd en Maarten! omgaan met verwijzingen naar LHBTIQ+-personen. Het doel is om inzicht te krijgen in de taalkeuzes van opiniebladen m.b.t. LHBTIQ+-personen en hoe dit er in de praktijk uitziet. Aan de hand van semi-gestructureerde interviews is onderzocht welke opvattingen eindredacteuren en hoofdredacteuren over inclusief taalgebruik omtrent LHBTIQ+-personen hebben. Door middel van een kwalitatieve inhoudsanalyse is onderzocht hoe in de periode oktober 2016 tot maart 2022 naar LHBTIQ+-personen verwezen werd in opiniebladen. Uit het onderzoek is gebleken dat opiniebladen op het vlak van taalontwikkelingen meegaan met de modus, kwetsende termen vermijden en geen duidelijke voorkeur hebben voor identity-first language of person-first language. Voorstanders van person-first language willen dat een persoon in eerste plaats als persoon wordt gezien en in de tweede plaats als een persoon met een bepaalde eigenschap, terwijl bij identity-first language de focus ligt op een bepaalde eigenschap als onlosmakelijk deel van de identiteit (Simonsen & Mruczek, 2021). De Groene Amsterdammer gaf aan een voorkeur te hebben voor identity-first bijvoeglijk naamwoord (bijv. homoseksuele man), person-first language (bijv. man die op mannen valt) of werkwoorden (bijv. hij valt op mannen). Elsevier Weekblad heeft de voorkeur voor identity-first bijvoeglijk naamwoord. Maarten! heeft de voorkeur voor werkwoorden. HP/De Tijd heeft de voorkeur voor identity-first zelfstandig naamwoord (bijv. homo). Vrij Nederland gaf geen voorkeur aan. In de praktijk verwijzen deze opiniebladen het meest naar LHBTIQ+-personen door middel van termen die hun gender of seksuele oriëntatie reduceren tot het geheel of tot een deel van hun identiteit. De meeste termen behoorden tot identity-first zelfstandig naamwoord, gevolgd door identity-first bijvoeglijk naamwoord, gevolgd door person-first, gevolgd door werkwoorden. Concluderend, de meeste termen waarmee opiniebladen verwijzen naar LHBTIQ+-personen reduceren de gender of seksuele oriëntatie tot iemands identiteit. Verder gaan opiniebladen op het gebied van taalontwikkelingen mee met de modus en vermijden ze kwetsende termen.Show less

The goal of the...Show moreAbstract Story and reading comprehension are important parts of education and daily life and there has been concerns about the decrease in the comprehension level of Dutch children. The goal of the current study was to determine the difference between video, audio and text when it comes to story comprehension. Besides the difference between the three different media, we were interested in the difference between the comprehension of strong and weak readers on these media. Because the standard of coherence could play an important part in story comprehension, we also examined if there was a difference in the standard of coherence between strong and weak readers. Children between eight and twelve years old (Grade 4-6) participated in this research. A within-subjects design was used and all children were presented with a video, an audio and a text. They answered open-ended questions to test their comprehension of the story. Their standard of coherence was tested with a self-report questionnaire. The results indicated a difference between the comprehension across different media. After watching a video, the story comprehension was better in comparison to after reading a text. No difference was found between audio and the other media. Strong readers appeared to have better comprehension than weak readers, but the pattern wasn’t different for video, audio and text. In addition, the standard of coherence didn’t differ between strong and weak readers. These findings have implications for the educational practice. Apparently both strong and weak readers seem to benefit from watching a video when it comes to their story comprehension. Teachers could therefore use videos to increase the story comprehension of their students. No difference was found between audio and text, but teachers may use audio to add some change to their lessons, in order to increase the engagement and motivation in reading education.Show less

Er bestaan twee tegenstrijdige verklaringen over de gevolgen van mediagebruik op het vertrouwen in de overheid, namelijk de media malaise theorie die stelt dat mediagebruik een negatief effect heeft op het vertrouwen in de overheid en de mobilisatietheorie die stelt dat dat mediagebruik een positief effect heeft op het vertrouwen in de overheid (Van der Valk, 2007). Je kunt je afvragen of deze tweestrijd bestaat, omdat je “media” niet als eenduidige term kunt benaderen, omdat het een gedifferentieerd concept is. Dit onderzoek legt de nadruk op de verschillende vormen media, waarbij de eenduidige term wordt uitgesplitst in verschillende typen media, namelijk de krant, sociale media, televisie en radio. Er wordt een verwachting uitgesproken dat hoe meer iemand de politiek volgt via de krant, hoe meer vertrouwen diegene heeft in de overheid. Er is een verwachting dat hoe meer iemand de politiek volgt via de televisie en sociale media, hoe minder vertrouwen diegene heeft in de overheid. Er is geen verwachting over het media-type radio, omdat niet genoeg literatuur specifiek ingaat op de radio. Er wordt een ordinale regressieanalyse uitgevoerd middels de European Values Dataset (2020). In de ordinale regressieanalyse is te zien dat er een positief, statistisch significant verband bestaat tussen de mate waarin iemand de politiek volgt via de dagelijkse krant en het vertrouwen dat diegene in de overheid heeft (EVS, 2020). Dit betekent dat hoe vaker iemand de politiek volgt via de dagelijkse krant, hoe meer vertrouwen diegene heeft in de overheid. Er is een negatief, niet statistisch significant verband tussen de mate waarin iemand de politiek volgt via de sociale media en het vertrouwen dat diegene heeft in de overheid (EVS, 2020). Dit betekent hoe vaker iemand de politiek volgt via de sociale media, hoe minder vertrouwen diegene heeft in de overheid, maar dit verband berust (waarschijnlijk) op toeval. Er is een positief, statistisch significant verband tussen de mate dat iemand de politiek via televisie en radio volgt en het vertrouwen dat diegene heeft in de overheid (EVS, 2020). Dit betekent dat hoe vaker iemand de politiek volgt via de televisie en radio, hoe meer vertrouwen diegene heeft in de overheid. Er wordt uiteindelijk geconcludeerd dat de media-voorkeuren van burgers een rol spelen in het vertrouwen van burgers in de overheid, want drie van de vier hypothesen kunnen een statistisch significant verband aantonen (EVS, 2020).Show less

The Republic of Turkey is a ubiquitous factor in Greek historiography, nation-building processes, and foreign security policy. Throughout their unstable and fluctuating relations, the Greco – Turkish dyad has received copious media attention. In 2019 Turkey and Libya signed a maritime exclusive economic zone (EEZ) Memorandum of Understanding. Such a settlement allegedly balked the EU's planned project to enhance the EastMed pipeline and violated Greece's EEZ, consequently causing an intense media reaction throughout Greece. This thesis applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to the publications of Kathimerini and Ta Nea, Greece's most widely read daily newspapers. The analysis brings insight into the media's sociopolitical role, its position regarding the citizenry and the state, and Turkey's importance as an external agent that reinforces the Greeks' in-group cohesion. Considering Aristotelian topoi to approach CDA, the analysis indicates that the Greek media's narrative on the Turkey-Libya settlement frames (i) Turkey as a threatening 'other,' (ii) portrays Greece as the referent object, and (iii) rejects the validity of such a settlement under international law, reinforcing the previous two points.Show less

WAP caused much outcry and grew rapidly in fame because of its...Show moreThis thesis aims to explore whether the song WAP (2020) by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, exemplifies a paradigm shift in feminism. WAP caused much outcry and grew rapidly in fame because of its sexually provocative imagery and lyrics, unlike other similar songs. The question arises: If Cardi and Megan’s song is so unique that it might be the start of a feminist paradigm shift, or whether it follows an already established trend? First, the song is looked at scene by scene, scouting for reoccurring elements. Then, general representational tactics of women in media are analyzed, which help evaluate the elements in WAP further, determining feminist or non-feminist tactics. Lastly, the music of other female artists like Madonna, Lil Kim and Christina Aguilera are studied in order to determine whether WAP is following a trend or stands on its own. After exploring these different aspects, it is possible to see that WAP is a starting point for a feminist paradigm shift in media, of which there are likely more artists or songs to follow.Show less
