Around AD 800 a relatively abrupt change occurred in the iconographic and architectural style, which was traditionally ascribed to an invasion of the Toltecs or the Toltec style. Recent research contradicts this theory, and this research master thesis addresses the possibility that the Itzá themselves are responsible for the change by incorporating central Mexican religious and cultural elements into their own culture. The context of this issue will be established by examining recent research, the background, and history of the Itzá. A study in the theory of group identity, and collective and cultural memory will address the processes that play a role in the creation of group identity and the legitimization of rule. An analysis of the iconography and architecture of several structures in the ceremonial centre of Chichén Itzá focuses on the general themes of the iconography to establish whether they reflect the legitimization of rule and the creation of group identity. The results indicate that the new style at Chichén Itzá is indeed aimed at supporting these processes. By adapting the style, the collective and cultural memories were altered, leading to a firm new group identity. This was necessary after the Itzá migrated north from their homeland in the Petén area, driven away by political and military conflict, where they founded Chichén Itzá. The results emphasize the self consciousness and independence of the Itzá in planning and executing identity politics. Additionally, the results suggest the Itzá were an empowered people, contrary to the past traditional view of Maya as a peaceful and passive people.Show less

The study of ancient Egypt is mainly done by Egyptologists who are more concerned with the Pharaonic era than the Roman era. Furthermore the history of research in Egypt is mostly about the papyri that are found. The papyri of Egypt are a major source for our knowledge of the Roman army. This phenomenon produces problems when it comes to the archaeology of Roman Egypt. However in this thesis I try to focus on the known archaeological sites in Egypt which can tell something about the Roman military presence and its function. The popularity of Pharaonic Egypt is fairly reasonable because it was a long prosperous period for Egypt. The Egyptian pharaohs ruled approximately from 3000 B.C. till the Persian conquest in the seventh century B.C.1 which is long compared to the Roman occupation which lasted roughly 300 years when Byzantine rule is not counted. This different approach to the history of Egypt is clearly seen in books which introduce the reader or give an overview of ancient Egypt, for example An Introduction to the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt by Katherine Bard.2 Only one chapter is about the Roman rule. The length of the Pharaonic period demands this but it steals a lot of focus from the Roman period. Strangely enough because of the papyri, which only survive in Egypt, there is a lot of knowledge about the Roman army. R.O. Fink describes many aspects of the Roman army in Roman Military Records on Papyrus published in 1971.3 More recent books describe the Roman army in a historical sense. However in this thesis I want to focus on the archaeological side of the Roman army and compare its function to other provinces. Obviously I will also use some written sources but I will try to give mainly the archaeological point of view in order to get a different perspective. This thesis focuses on three issues: What was the function of the Roman army in Egypt? Is the function of the Roman army unique in Egypt or can it be recognized in other provinces? What can the archaeology of the Roman army in Egypt tells us of the Roman army in general? In order to give answers to these problems I have to give an overview of the archaeology of the Roman army in Egypt. Due to the reasons mentioned above this forms a problem on its own. The literature of Roman archaeology in Egypt is very limited. Most specific research is carried out in the Eastern Desert where some quarry sites are excavated. However other sites throughout Egypt are scarcely researched and often without archaeological methods.4 So the available literature is scattered and the goal of this thesis is also to make an overview of all this data. The first chapter gives an overview of the Roman army in general. The army is the most important feature on which the Roman Empire is build on. This feature shall be elaborated in the first chapter. The next chapter gives an overview of the Roman army in Egypt. This history will show the background of the Roman army and its location within Egypt. In the third chapter I will discuss the recruitment and function of the Roman soldiers. In the final two chapters I will discuss the various military installations. In the conclusion the contents of these chapters fall together in order to answer the above-mentioned issues.Show less

Er is al veel onderzoek gedaan naar de relatie tussen de taalvaardigheden en spelontwikkeling van kinderen met een autismespectrumstoornis. Dit onderzoek is belangrijk omdat hierdoor de hulpverlening aan deze kinderen steeds beter aangescherpt kan worden. Het huidige onderzoek richt zich niet alleen op de relatie tussen taalvaardigheden en het fantasiespel (ofwel symbolisch spel), maar onderzoekt ook of er een relatie is tussen lagere spelvormen (simpel manipuleren, combinatiespel en functioneel spel) en taalvaardigheden van kinderen met een autismespectrumstoornis. De onderzoeksgroep bestaat uit 30 kinderen in de leeftijd van 42 tot en met 120 maanden (M=74.6, Sd=21.7) met een autismespectrumstoornis. De gemiddelde ontwikkelingsleeftijd ligt tussen 1 en 58 maanden (M=21.70, Sd=11.20). Binnen deze groep zijn er 8 meisjes en 22 jongens. Alle kinderen uit de onderzoeksgroep laten spelhandelingen zien. Het meeste spel wordt gezien in de lage spelvormen (simpel manipuleren en combinatiespel). Veel kinderen uit de onderzoeksgroep (n=22) komen niet tot symbolisch spel. De taalvaardigheden van de kinderen uit de onderzoeksgroep zijn zwak tot gemiddeld ontwikkeld ten opzichte van zich normaal ontwikkelende kinderen. Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat er een relatie bestaat tussen productieve taalvaardigheden en het functioneel en symbolisch spel van deze kinderen. Er zijn geen significante correlaties gevonden tussen receptieve taalvaardigheden en de spelontwikkeling en tussen productieve taalvaardigheden en de spelvormen simpel manipuleren en combinatiespel van de kinderen uit de onderzoeksgroep. Ook is er geen verschil gevonden in de taalvaardigheden tussen kinderen met een laag spelniveau (simpel manipuleren en combinatiespel) en kinderen met een hoog spelniveau (functioneel spel en symbolisch spel).Show less

Beyond the contextual and analytical presentation of new material to the archaeological community, it reestablishes an understudied typology through the promotion of a geographical, chronological, cultural, and functional frameworks. This study uses the figurines as a base to explore issues inherent in their find contexts and preservation. After establishing typologies and object catalogs, it explores the archaeological visibility of intentional material disregard, the dynamism of contemporary value attributions to representative material culture, and the interplay of ancient peoples with their local histories. In highlighting the functionality of a symbolic material culture that existed outside the settlement’s imperial sphere, this thesis uses the figurines to reveal the cosmopolitan nature of the common people at Tell Sabi Abyad. The study establishes one typology as non-Assyrian and invasive, and uses the context and fracture patterns of the others to show that they reflect utilitarian rather than ritual usage.Show less

Emphasis of the study is on the effects of three characteristics of the policies themselves - the required personal efforts, expected period before one benefits from the policy, and fairness of the policy. Background variables and factors based on environmental beliefs are also included in order to develop a complete model. Using an experimental survey design, data collected on Dutch high school students shows that the three characteristics tested do not significantly influence support for the environmental policies. For most policies, knowledge of environmental problems and general opinions about the importance of the environment compared to the importance of the economy have the strongest impact on support for the policies.Show less

To...Show moreWe study the dynamics of nucleosomes, DNA-wrapped proteins, along a DNA chain. First we show that a single nucleosome makes a simple symmetric random walk with respect to the DNA sequence. To obtain an estimate for the diffusion coefficient, we study a specific random walk in the quarter plane, absorbed by its boundary. There are exact results in two limiting cases, and in general we derive a continuum approximation. Then we show that a DNA chain filled with multiple nucleosomes cannot be transcribed by RNA polymerase if there is only hard-core interaction between the polymerase and the nucleosome. In the end, we suggest an alternative interaction between RNA polymerase and nucleosomes which allows the DNA to be transcribed without the help of other proteins.Show less

The Family of Bovidae is abundant within the animal remains of Woerden, which makes the subject important for research. The main aim of this research is to determine the different genera in the Family Bovidae, the genera Bos and Bison. The appearance of certain species can be an indicator for a certain habitat or period. The species found during the analysis of the material are Bison priscus, Bison cf. schoetensacki, Bison cf. menneri, Bison sp., Bos primigenius and Bos sp.. The genus Bison is more abundant than the genus Bos. The appearance of Bison menneri within the material is an indicator for Early Pleistocene existence of a selection of the remains, because this species is the only one that lived during the Early Pleistocene in this region. Because of the lack of data of the depth of the remains, relative dating is not possible for the other bovid remains.Show less
De Vroeg-Pleistocene afzettingen in de omgeving van Tegelen (Limburg, Nederland) worden algemeen beschouwd als de type-secties voor het Tiglien en de zoodierfauna van Tegelen speelt een belangrijke...Show moreDe Vroeg-Pleistocene afzettingen in de omgeving van Tegelen (Limburg, Nederland) worden algemeen beschouwd als de type-secties voor het Tiglien en de zoodierfauna van Tegelen speelt een belangrijke rol in de datering van Vroeg Pleistocene fauna‟s en archeologische sites, zoals bijvoorbeeld Dmanisi (Georgië). Momenteel staat de ouderdom van de klassieke Tegelen fauna alsmede de duur van de periode waarin de verschillende lagen zijn afgezet ter discussie: de sedimenten in het gebied zouden niet gedurende een lange periode (>300 ka), maar relatief snel (>10 ka) zijn afgezet. Daarbij zouden de sedimentaire verschillen tussen de strata terug te voeren zijn tot faciele verschillen binnen een riviersysteem dat de afzettingen gevormd heeft. Dat zou betekenen dat de totale sequentie een veel kortere periode beslaat dan aanvankelijk werd gedacht en dat de fossiele zoogdierresten uit Tegelen en de nabije omgeving min of meer even oud zijn. Een eerste onderzoek heeft echter aangetoond dat de kleilagen mogelijk toch fauna‟s van verschillende ouderdom bevatten. De faunaresten uit Tegelen-Maalbeek zijn mogelijk toch ouder dan de zoogdierfauna van Russel-Tiglia-Egypte. In deze scriptie wordt een deel van het faunamateriaal van Tegelen-Maalbeek gepresenteerd; namelijk de woelmuizen (Arvicola, Rodentia). Uit de soortbepaling en vergelijking met de locatie Russel-Tiglia-Egypte blijkt inderdaad een verschil in ouderdom: de woelmuizen van Tegelen-Maalbeek zijn minder ver ontwikkeld dan die van Russel-Tiglia-Egypte.Show less
Deze scriptie was erop gericht om te onderzoeken of het mogelijk was om met behulp van tandmetingen de biologische sekse te bepalen van begraven individuen van de sites Anse Lavoutte, St. Lucia, en...Show moreDeze scriptie was erop gericht om te onderzoeken of het mogelijk was om met behulp van tandmetingen de biologische sekse te bepalen van begraven individuen van de sites Anse Lavoutte, St. Lucia, en Anse à la Gourde, Guadeloupe. Samples werden genomen van begravingen waarvan het geslacht bekend was en van begravingen waarvan dit nog onduidelijk was, met behulp van dit onderzoek zou worden geprobeerd om deze laatste categorie toe te bedelen tot een geslacht. Er zijn vier metingen genomen van bepaalde aspecten van alle beschikbare tanden, de mesiodistale diameter van de cervix van de tand, de mesiodistale diameter van de kroon van de tand, de buccolinguale diameter van de kroon van de tand, en tenslotte de kroonhoogte van de tand. Deze aspecten zijn gebaseerd op eerder onderzoek. Alleen de tanden van volwassenen zijn opgenomen in dit onderzoek, omdat de tanden van niet-volwassenen nog aan het ontwikkelen zijn en nog niet hun uiteindelijke vorm hebben. De permanente tanden zijn gemeten met behulp van een digitale schuifmaat en zijn gemeten door de auteur, die ze verder geanalyseerd heeft. De tanden zijn statistisch getest op significante verschillen tussen mannen en vrouwen, met behulp van het programma SPSS. T-testen zijn gebruikt om dit te onderzoeken. Een vereiste voor deze test was dat de gekozen sample normaal verdeeld zou zijn, of zou bestaan uit minstens 30 gegevens. Al snel in het onderzoek werd duidelijk dat dit niet noodzakelijk was, omdat ondanks het kleine aantal, de tanden toch verschil toonden tussen de gebitten van mannen en vrouwen.Show less
