Migration is an important phenomenon in the world we live in today. However, literary research into this topic is focused on certain directions of migration, while research into other directions is limited. This paper aims to find general characteristics of migration literature by comparing works about migration in different directions, written by authors with different backgrounds. This exploratory research finds that certain characteristics, like fear, uncertainty and hope, appear to be inherent to this genre. On the contrary, other characteristics, like homesickness, are not as common as could be expected
