Hierbij zal de opzet van de onderzoeksvraag en de onderzoeksaanpak worden beschreven en beargumenteerd. Hierin wordt beschreven hoe het NMT is onderzocht en waarom we voor dit onderzoeksdesign hebben gekozen. Daarnaast worden ethische overwegingen van het onderzoek besproken en knelpunten aangekaart. Vervolgens zal er worden ingegaan op de conclusie die is getrokken uit het adviesrapport en wordt er een advies gegeven voor de opdrachtgever van het onderzoek. Investigation on this topic...Show moreThis thesis analysed how recreational divers' interactions with underwater cultural heritage (UCH) can positively add to UCH's narrative, values, and safeguarding. Investigation on this topic included the creation of interactions and values coupled with a review of the relevance of current laws and scuba schools’ education pertaining to UCH. Nonetheless, recreational scuba divers are recurrently sidelined as stakeholders in preserving the longevity of UCH, oftentimes due to a lack of knowledge and awareness, despite them being the core community able to interact with UCH. As a piece of collective history, cultural heritage belongs to the community and should be an accessible experience. Methods of investigation included both desk-based and ethnographic research. Observations from desk-based research on ocean dynamics highlighted the anthropocentric mindset of current understandings of legislation and education, which influences individuals' interactions and values. These experiences are all subjective to the beholder, shifting the discussion from 'how do we value' to 'how do we live' with UCH. While ethnographic research in the form of interviews with recreational dive professionals emphasised the need to adhere to simple mottos to instil proper etiquette while diving on UCH, regardless of the dive site (nature vs culture) and call for more accountability from scuba schools to relay universal guidelines. Questionnaires from maritime archaeologists and heritage managers gave a professional perspective on the recreational dive community and their interactions with UCH, demonstrating that personal narratives shift the interpretation of our affiliation regardless of how objective one can be on a subject. By taking into account the issue of recreational divers' impact having a direct bearing on UCH, it can be deduced that with training and education, the negative effects may be greatly minimised. Achieving this will be an ongoing process that requires continual monitoring while keeping an open and ongoing dialogue, ensuring no voices remain unheard. Finally, by advocating that UCH is a resource of economic benefit, the scuba diving industry's potential within the Blue Economy is valued. Ultimately, making UCH more accessible will ensure its longevity and survival.Show less

Dit gebeurt aan de hand van het onderzoek dat Brandtzaeg et. al (2016)...Show moreIn deze scriptie wordt onderzoek gedaan naar hoe Nederlandse journalisten amateurbeeldmateriaal van sociale media verifiëren. Dit gebeurt aan de hand van het onderzoek dat Brandtzaeg et. al (2016) deden. Zij onderzochten de manier waarop journalisten uit verschillende Europese landen materiaal van sociale media verifiëren en daarnaast brengen ze ook in kaart hoe deze journalisten dit materiaal zien en benaderen. Daarnaast doen de journalisten in het onderzoek van Brandtzaeg et. al aanbevelingen voor hoe het verificatieproces beter kan. De vragen die in dit onderzoek worden beantwoord, zijn dan ook voor een deel rechtstreeks afgeleid van hun onderzoek, maar dan toegespitst op amateurbeeldmateriaal van sociale media. Zeker in crisissituaties is de informatie en het (beeld)materiaal dat op sociale media te vinden is voor veel journalisten inmiddels al een zeer belangrijke bron (Rauchfleisch 2017, p.1). Dat maakt het relevant om te onderzoeken of en hoe Nederlandse journalisten dit materiaal verifiëren. Ten eerste voor de journalisten zelf, maar ook voor de nieuwsconsument. Dit onderzoek wil aantonen hoe de verificatie van amateurbeeldmateriaal van sociale media bij nieuwsorganisaties in zijn werk gaat en dus kan de consument zich op basis daarvan ook afvragen hoe kritisch hij zelf moet kijken naar materiaal van amateurs dat door journalisten wordt gebruikt. Hiertoe is de volgende onderzoeksvraag gebruikt: Hoe verifiëren journalisten amateurbeeldmateriaal van sociale media? Het onderzoek is zowel met een kwalitatieve als een kwantitatieve methode uitgevoerd. Het kwalitatieve deel bestaat uit semi-gestructureerde interviews, die zich richten op het verificatieproces en de waarde die journalisten hechten aan dat proces. Er wordt gereconstrueerd of en hoe journalisten beelden van sociale media verifiëren, en hoe belangrijk zij verificatie in dit opzicht vinden. De vragen zijn grotendeels afgeleid van het onderzoek van Brandtzaeg et. al (2016, p. 327). De kwantitatieve gegevens komen voort uit een enquête en hier gaat het over de algemene houding van journalisten ten opzichte van amateurbeelden afkomstig van sociale media. Het geeft een beeld van de waarde die de journalisten aan amateurbeelden toekennen en hoe vaak zij deze gebruiken. De enquête werd voorafgaande aan het interview door de journalist ingevuld. De interviews vormen verreweg de belangrijkste bron van informatie waaruit de conclusies in dit onderzoek worden getrokken. De gegevens uit de enquête dienen vooral als nuttige ondersteunende achtergrondinformatie. Er zijn in dit onderzoek 12 journalisten geïnterviewd en geënquêteerd, werkzaam bij verschillende media. Uit de resultaten is naar voren gekomen dat de Nederlandse journalisten in dit onderzoek allemaal in meer of mindere mate gebruik maken van sociale media voor hun werk. Amateurbeeldmateriaal maakt daar een deel van uit. Zij gebruiken dit materiaal minder vaak dan materiaal van sociale media in het algemeen, maar toch zeker nog regelmatig. De verificatie van amateurbeeldmateriaal van sociale media is naar de mening van de respondenten essentieel en ook belangrijker dan de verificatie van ander materiaal. Dit komt vooral voort uit de angst dat dit beeldmateriaal gemanipuleerd kan worden. De angst voor manipulatie van het beeldmateriaal wordt door de respondenten in dit onderzoek breed gedeeld. Dit betekent niet dat de journalisten altijd overgaan tot de verificatie van het materiaal. Tijdsdruk is een aspect dat in dit geval vaak voorbij komt als verklaring. Journalisten willen iets graag brengen, en maken dan de afweging dat verificatie niet nodig is. Er wordt in zo’n geval dan vaak afgegaan op het eigen gevoel, een journalistieke ‘gut feeling’. In het verificatieproces maken de journalisten vooral gebruik van verificatiemethoden die als traditioneel kunnen worden gezien. Verificatietools die hiervoor beschikbaar zijn, vinden bij de journalisten in dit onderzoek amper aftrek. De respondenten deden wel aanbevelingen voor het ontwikkelen van tools, die er vooral op neerkwamen dat tools die de journalisten tijd en moeite besparen in het proces, gewenst zijn.Show less

Confucianism is the practice of following the ideology of Confucius (551 B.C. – 479 B.C.), who was a Chinese philosopher and teacher. In memory of him, the many Confucian temples in China not only display the importance of Confucius and his philosophy but also teach visitors about Confucius and Confucianism. These are temples where people can pay their respects to Confucius, honor him, and learn more about his life and thoughts. The Confucius Temple in Qufu was built a year after Confucius’ death, in 478 BC, at the location thought to have been his residence. The Temple is advertised in many tourist guides as the largest and most famous Confucian temple in China, and as one of the three greatest ancient building complexes in the country. This study tries to understand how the Temple contributes to the understanding that visitors gain from visiting the Temple, by conducting questionnaires and interviews.Show less
This study aimed to explore the differences in self-perceived identities, perceptions of social inclusion and perceptions of social progression of Somali-born migrants entering and residing in the...Show moreThis study aimed to explore the differences in self-perceived identities, perceptions of social inclusion and perceptions of social progression of Somali-born migrants entering and residing in the UK. The study focuses on whether these differences exist depending on whether migrants arrive from the Netherlands, a Member State of the European Union (EU), or whether they arrive directly from Somalia, a nation outside of the EU. Literature concerned with Somalis residing in the UK, as well as specific literature focusing on Somalis leaving the Netherlands to migrate to the UK was used to contextualise the study. The research consisted of 18 face-to-face interviews carried in the UK: 10 interviews with individuals who arrived from Somalia and 8 with those that arrived from the Netherlands. Based on the data collected from these interviews, self-perceived identities between the two groups largely differ. Those arriving from the Netherlands typically disassociate from their Somali identity. Secondly, formulations of identity play a pivotal role in perceptions of social inclusion and social progression. On arrival those arriving from the Netherlands perceive themselves to be more socially included and have higher prospects of progressing in society. In terms of how these factors change over time, few conclusions could be drawn – though it appears that differences in country of arrival may become less important. Nevertheless, Somalis residing in the UK from both groups hold positive perceptions of how they are progressing in society.Show less

This meant the end of the Dutch East...Show moreOn December 27th 1949, the Netherlands transferred most of the sovereignty to Indonesia after a decolonization-conflict that lasted for more than four years. This meant the end of the Dutch East Indies. The soldiers of the Royal Dutch Army returned home after having lived under extreme conditions in a country that was completely unlike anything they were used to. Over the decades that followed a large number of publications appeared, many of them informal. In these publications the former Dutch soldiers told stories about their migration to the Dutch East Indies as soldiers, and their return to the Netherlands after their stay of three to four years. For my internship at the KITLV I took stock of some of the published stories as well as of the interviews with former soldiers collected by the KITLV. What struck me was that these stories formed a more or less coherent collective narrative. This narrative shows primarily similarities in descriptions of preparations and expectations of the Dutch East Indies, their experiences in the Dutch East Indies, and returning home after the war. In this thesis I researched several possible explanations why the content of these stories that recall these individual expectations, perceptions and experiences is of such a collective nature.Show less
