I will review different definitions and suggested characteristics of populism and create an overarching definition in order to understand what populism is. In this study, I performed a quantitative research to analyze Wilders’ discourse by focusing on important elements in populist speeches. More specifically, this study focuses on the use of references concerning ‘the people’, what elements influence discursive strategies and the focus on different etymologies in order to arrive at a better understanding of the ideas and rhetorical tactics of populist parties. This led to the conclusions that Wilders’ discursive strategies are affected by the topic of a speech, the audience and the date when the speech takes place. Furthermore, I conclude that the etymologies of references concerning ‘the people’ and ‘the opposition’ are of importance to Wilders because of his preference to use Germanic words to refer to ‘the people’ and loanwords to address ‘the opposition’.Show less

The thesis compares and contrasts rhetorical trends across parties and election cycles. In doing so, it shows the influence of populist politics on mainstream politics. It concludes that all three mainstream parties VVD, CDA and PvdA have used PGAIR as a rhetorical tool since 2000. An increase in use could be linked to the rise in popularity of anti-immigrant populist rhetoric in the Netherlands.Show less

When they co-appear, the metaphor seems to be taking away fallaciousness of the arguments, making the fallacies seem more reasonable to the average language user. To investigate whether this strategic manoeuvre is being used in Dutch politics, three debates of the Dutch elections in 2017 are examined, in which the appearance of the false analogy stands out and is being elaborated on.Show less

The research question is: How can the behaviour of the MEPs of the Dutch Freedom Party be characterized? The behaviour of the MEPs of the Freedom Party is researched through the use of role theory. There are many different typologies concerning the roles of members of national parliaments, MEPs and eurosceptic MEPs which are discussed in this thesis. It is then researched which of these roles are applicable to the behaviour of the MEPs of the Freedom Party. The parliamentary activities (written questions, motions for resolutions, speeches in the plenary, attendance to plenary) of the MEPs of the Freedom Party are covered and two MEPs (Barry Madlener and Auke Zijlstra) of the Freedom Party were asked a number of questions about their behaviour in the European Parliament.Show less
