Trump's 2016 campaign was marked by an unique and idiosyncratic rhetoric and campaigning style in which social media play a large role and especially his use of Twitter was remarkable (Polak, 2018). Trump’s rhetoric was full of pathos-driven techniques like: America first exceptionalism, hyperboles, repetition, fear appeals, ad populum and ad hominem arguments (Mercieca, 2020) while his rhetoric lacked complexity (Skinnel, 2018). Furthermore, Trump was known to distort facts (Skinnel, 2018). Although Trump was suspended from Twitter, begin January 2021, shortly after losing the election and the storming of the capitol took place, he has recently made a re-entrance on Twitter. The author of this paper wishes to contribute to the current research on Trump’s unique rhetorical style which continues to have a strong influence in America and do so by analysing Trump’s Twitter use during the 2020 elections, making use of a corpus based approach supplemented by a qualitative analysis of his rhetoric.Show less

Show less

In order to collect data to answer the research questions, the Corpus of Contemporary American English was used. For each individual neoclassical intensifier, a random sample of approximately 100 tokens was extracted from the corpus. The data were then analysed for their independency, the category of the base word, whether the intensifiers were used in a positive, negative or neutral context, and their meaning or function, including replaceability. The results suggest that the five neoclassical intensifier do compete, and that this competition is leaning towards adaptation of the various forms on different levels.Show less

Hence, four municipalities in the Leiden area redesigned their objection procedure. The new way of working is based on mediation skills. Yet, it is unclear what these mediation skills signify in this context. And how are they applied by the objection committee (known as mediation style)? Likewise, how do the conflicting parties react to this new way of working (known as conflict style)? And, last but not least – what causes all these styles? In order to answer these questions, qualitative data from 12 hearings is presented in a linguistic corpus. Excerpts are taken out and assessed to offer a comprehensive answer. The results were as follows. Generally, objectors maintained a competing, defensive style; authority representatives retreated to the law, failing to make their contributions relevant for the objector; interested third parties were resentful; and the committee had a facilitative mediation style – for the benefit of the conflicting parties. One probable cause of these conflict styles is the existence of four types of asymmetry between the objector and the remaining parties. Furthermore, it is possible that mental association with contexts of fighting is a cause of said conflict styles. The consequence of these styles was that the objector often put in extra effort, whereas the authority representative took a step backwards in effort. As a small-scale study, this papers offers incentives for larger studies into the government-citizen relationship; into power in negotiation; and into face negotiation theory.Show less
