Danielewski's novel 'House of Leaves.' Chapter 1 is split into two sections: section 1.1 contains an analysis of the gothic elements present in 'The Navidson Record' central to the novel and, in section 1.2, I proceed to examine the novel's metafictional characteristics and how metafiction and Gothicism are intertwined in the text. In both preceding sections, the reader's knowledge gap—referred to in my thesis as the epistemological gap—is prevalent in my reading of the novel. Consequently, in Chapter 2 I explore this knowledge gap further, relating it to the gothic and metafictional elements analyzed in the preceding chapter. Lastly, I argue that the audience might fill the epistemological gap by projecting their own personal interpretations of the text onto it. One of the main characters inside the narrative, Johnny Truant, projects his childhood trauma onto the text and processes it in his annotations to 'The Navidson Record.'Show less

Women who have suffered domestic violence have a high chance...Show moreThis research focused on women and their children who have recently moved in to a women’s shelter after experiencing domestic violence. Women who have suffered domestic violence have a high chance of developing trauma-related symptoms, which can affect their mental health and parenting skills. Often, these women’s children are at risk of developing externalizing behaviour, which can lead to violent and criminal behaviour in the future. This research aimed to study the relationship between trauma-related symptoms in mothers and externalizing behaviour of their children. The age at which mothers had their first child was used as a moderator. Data was collected within the research project Samen Stap Voor Stap Vooruit, by visiting women in their shelter. There were three visits per participant, each consisting of a set of questionnaires being taken and video recordings being made of the interaction between mother and child. Data from questionnaires of the first visit were used for this paper. After performing regression analyses with trauma-related symptoms and age of first becoming a mother as independent variables and children’s externalizing behaviour as dependent variable, no relation was found between these variables for the total model. However, there was a positive relation between the age at which a mother had her first child and the externalizing behaviour of the participating child. Children of mothers who were older at first conception were more likely to score higher on externalizing behaviour. The idea of social timing can possibly explain this, with older mothers perhaps having a smaller social safety net, more health issues, less energy, or having stayed longer in the abusive relationship. Further research about the possible relation between being a relatively older mother and externalizing problems in the children is encouraged, as current literature about this topic is slim.Show less

Refugees have more chance of developing psychopathology, which can be explained from the (biosocial) ecological models. Individual and environmental traits influence the development, course and treatment of psychopathology. An unstable environment might cause more stress and mental health issues. The aim of this meta-analysis is to research how effective psychotherapy is for treating PTSD in refugees, and if age as individual factor and language/ cultural adaptation as environmental factor influence the treatment efficacy. Methodology A systematic review with different meta-analyses. Results Systematic researches provided 132 effect sizes within 80 suitable studies. The overall effect size of treating PTSD was significant (Cohen’s d = -0.941, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between the mean effect sizes of treating PTSD between children, adolescents and adults. There was no difference in treatment efficacy as a function of the level of language or cultural adaptation found. Discussion and conclusion These results show that psychotherapy significantly lowers PTSD symptoms in refugees. However, our results do not find evidence for the proposed (biosocial) ecological models since age and adaptation are not associated with treatment efficacy. Moreover, there is a large difference in treatment efficacy between refugees and non-refugees, this might be caused by the different structural designs between the studies included in this meta-analysis. Future research should consider these different structural designs and should research more environmental factors that can increase treatment efficacy.Show less

ALE are a common experience among students and may have significant effects on mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, stress, and lifetime depression. In this study we use multiple measures for ALE, which assess several types of ALE, including life trauma, childhood trauma, bullying, childhood adversities and negative life experiences. These outcomes are measured by the PHQ-9, GAD-7, PSS-10 and the LIDAS. This study investigated the relationships between ALE and these mental health outcomes, together with the predictive role of childhood trauma, negative life experiences, being bullied and childhood adversities by using multiple regression. In addition, we explored the role of gender as a control variable and conducted an exploratory network analysis. A multicohort study provided data from a sample of 449 Dutch higher education students who completed self-report measures of mental health outcomes and ALE experiences. The results showed that negative life events are significant predictors for all four mental health outcomes. Childhood trauma predicted depression, lifetime depression and stress, and life trauma were predictive of depression. Overall, these findings were supported by network analysis. They suggest that negative life events may be more impactful to current mental health than life trauma, and that both can have a lasting impact on the mental health of students. The implications and alternative explanations for these findings are discussed, together with suggestions for future research.Show less
Dit onderzoek is uitgevoerd in opdracht van Ipse de Bruggen, met als doel om de kwaliteit van zorg voor jongeren met een licht verstandelijke beperking (LVB) binnen de intramurale setting te...Show moreDit onderzoek is uitgevoerd in opdracht van Ipse de Bruggen, met als doel om de kwaliteit van zorg voor jongeren met een licht verstandelijke beperking (LVB) binnen de intramurale setting te verbeteren. Om dit doel te bereiken is doormiddel van literatuuronderzoek naar de belangrijkste constructen gezocht die voor eenieder van de jongeren met een LVB van belang zijn. Door deze constructen systematisch op groepsniveau te meten, ook wel Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM) genoemd, kan de algehele kwaliteit van de zorg verbeterd worden. Op basis van deze constructen is daarom ook een set van meetinstrumenten gezocht die deze constructen meten. Om een zo volledig mogelijk beeld te verkrijgen van de status van de constructen op groepsniveau is tevens literatuuronderzoek gedaan naar de frequentie van afname van het meetinstrument. Ook is met behulp van literatuuronderzoek gezocht naar algemene aanbevelingen waardoor een test afname bij jongeren met een LVB zo betrouwbaar mogelijke resultaten oplevert. Om de praktische haalbaarheid van de te meten constructen te waarborgen zijn interviews gehouden met de medewerkers van Ipse de Bruggen. Het doel van de interviews was om de mening van de medewerkers te verkrijgen over het belang van de constructen en om inzicht te krijgen welke meetinstrumenten bekend zijn binnen Ipse de Bruggen. Verder werden er vragen gesteld over de gewenste frequentie van afname en over de algemene aanbevelingen van een testafname. De interviews zijn vervolgens gecodeerd en geanalyseerd. Uit het literatuuronderzoek bleek dat de volgende constructen van belang zijn voor jongeren met een LVB binnen de intramurale setting: veiligheid, participatie, intimiteit, trauma, emotieregulatie, zelfredzaamheid, adaptieve vaardigheden en emotionele en gedragsproblemen. Op basis van deze constructen zijn de volgende meetinstrumenten geselecteerd: Ben ik tevreden? (BiT), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Fragebogen zur Erhebung der Emotionsregulation bei Kindern und Jugendlichen (Feel-KJ), Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) en Dit vind ik ervan!. Deze meetinstrumenten worden in dit adviesrapport in detail besproken. Daarnaast duidde literatuur aan dat ROM-metingen idealiter voor en na de behandeling plaats zouden moeten vinden. Tenslotte is uit het literatuuronderzoek gebleken dat er een aantal algemene aanbevelingen zijn waardoor de afname van een meetinstrument bij jongeren met een LVB meer betrouwbare resultaten oplevert. Deze aanbevelingen worden in dit adviesrapport uitgebreid besproken. Uit de interviews is gebleken dat de medewerkers de in de literatuur gevonden constructen belangrijk achten. Hierbij bleek dat het construct intimiteit het hoogste scoorde en het construct participatie het laagst. Daarnaast gaven medewerkers aan de volgende meetinstrumenten reeds te gebruiken: Seksuele Kennis-, Attitude-, Vaardigheden- en Ervaringenlijst (SKAVE), Inventarisatie van Redzaamheids Aspecten (INVRA) en Leefklimaat. De medewerkers hadden een positieve attitude over deze meetinstrumenten. Deze meetinstrumenten zijn niet gevonden tijdens het literatuuronderzoek, maar sluiten wel aan op de gevonden constructen. Tevens zijn deze meetinstrumenten in dit adviesrapport in detail besproken. Bovendien bleek dat de medewerkers aangaven dat metingen om het kwartaal moeten plaatsvinden. De huidige werkdruk laat deze kwartaal metingen volgens de medewerkers echter niet altijd toe. Tenslotte bleek dat de medewerkers het eens waren over het feit dat een onderzoekssessie korter dan 2 uur zou moeten zijn. Ook gaven de medewerkers aan dat testafname in een prikkelarme omgeving bepaald moet worden door het soort onderzoek dat wordt afgenomen. Hierbij kon niet-diagnostisch onderzoek gedaan worden in een niet-prikkelarme omgeving en diagnostisch onderzoek in een prikkelarme omgeving. Concluderend wordt aangeraden om de, in de literatuur gevonden, constructen te meten bij jongeren met een LVB om de kwaliteit van de zorg te verbeteren. Ook wordt geadviseerd om de in de literatuur gevonden meetinstrumenten te gebruiken omdat hiermee wordt aangesloten op de overkoepelende constructen die relevant zijn voor jongeren met een LVB. Bovendien wordt aangeraden om de instrumenten SKAVE, INVRA en Leefklimaat te blijven gebruiken, aangezien medewerkers aangaven hier positieve ervaringen mee te hebben. Wanneer de werkdruk dit toelaat zullen de kwartaalmetingen kunnen worden aangehouden om een zo compleet mogelijk beeld te verkrijgen van de constructen. Tenslotte is het voor betrouwbare resultaten belangrijk dat er rekening wordt gehouden met de algemene aanbevelingen voor een goede testafname.Show less

This research was conducted among families who were registered at Veilig Thuis under a notification of domestic violence. A sample of 1172 parents (862 female, 310 male) completed self-report questionnaires about trauma, personality traits and parenting stress. Trauma is directly related to parental stress. Neuroticism is a partial mediator in the relationship between traumatic experiences of parents and parenting stress. Agreeableness is not a mediator in this relationship. The findings suggest that parents with a trauma score high in neuroticism, subsequently, parents high in neuroticism experience more parental stress. This was not found for agreeableness. Directions for future research regarding personality and parental stress and the limitations of present study are discussed.Show less

In dit rapport wordt op basis van literatuuronderzoek en kwalitatief onderzoek een advies gegeven aan TeamNEXT, een multidisciplinair team dat zich richt op casuïstiek waarin behandelaren en ouders...Show moreIn dit rapport wordt op basis van literatuuronderzoek en kwalitatief onderzoek een advies gegeven aan TeamNEXT, een multidisciplinair team dat zich richt op casuïstiek waarin behandelaren en ouders vastlopen of vragen hebben over de juiste timing van interventies. Zij adviseren vanuit het Neurosequentiële Model van Therapie (NMT), waarmee de ontwikkeling van een kind volledig in kaart wordt gebracht om te bepalen welke interventie het best bij dat kind past. Het onderzoek beschreven in dit rapport is uitgevoerd naar aanleiding van de tweeledige adviesvraag van TeamNEXT betreffende 1) het wetenschappelijke inzicht achter het NMT en 2) de ervaringen van behandelaren aan wie zij advies hebben verstrekt. Naar aanleiding van de adviesvraag zijn er twee specifieke, meetbare onderzoeksvragen opgesteld. De eerste onderzoeksvraag die beantwoord wordt in dit adviesrapport luidt als volgt: “In hoeverre is het verschil tussen de hersenontwikkeling van jongens en meisjes na jeugdtrauma relevant en zou het beschreven moeten worden in het Neurosequentiële Model (NMT)?”. Deze vraag wordt beantwoord aan de hand van een literatuuronderzoek. De tweede onderzoeksvraag is “In hoeverre zijn de adviezen van TeamNEXT aan behandelaren opgevolgd en wat zijn de voornaamste redenen voor het wel of niet opvolgen van dit advies?” en wordt beantwoord middels semigestructureerde interviews met behandelaren die advies hebben ontvangen van TeamNEXT. Uit het literatuuronderzoek is gebleken dat er zowel overeenkomsten als verschillen zijn tussen jongens en meisjes op het gebied van traumarespons en -verwerking. Daarbij zouden de verschillen uitgebreider kunnen worden beschreven in het NMT. In totaal waren vier behandelaren bereid om deel te nemen aan een interview. Drie daarvan waren al bekend met het NMT. De adviezen van TeamNEXT werden door alle behandelaren als positief beoordeeld. Zij gaven aan bevestiging te hebben gekregen van hun eigen handelen en nieuwe inzichten uit het advies te hebben vergaard. De ervaringen met de uitvoering van de adviezen waren echter wisselend. Sommige behandelaren kregen te maken met praktische belemmeringen, zoals een tekort aan doorverwijsmogelijkheden, weinig tijd, en ernstige problematiek, waardoor het niet mogelijk was om het advies volledig op te volgen. Toch zouden alle vier de behandelaren een adviestraject bij TeamNEXT aanraden aan collega’s met een complexe of vastlopende casus. Al met al kan er worden geadviseerd om de verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes wat betreft traumarespons en -verwerking mee te nemen in het advies naar behandelaren. Verder zou TeamNEXT rekening kunnen houden met de haalbaarheid van de gegeven adviezen, waarbij voornamelijk meer rekening moet worden gehouden met de praktische belemmeringen. Concreet zouden er meer doorverwijsmogelijkheden gecreëerd kunnen worden, zoals het opstellen van een lijst van behandelaren die werken volgens de werkwijze van het NMT en de geadviseerde behandelingen van TeamNEXT uit zouden kunnen voeren.Show less

De hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek luidt: In hoeverre is het Neurosequentiële Model voor Therapie (NMT) van Bruce Perry een aanvulling op het Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency framework (ARC) op het gebied van traumabehandeling bij kinderen op basis van theoretische inzichten en in hoeverre zijn de interventies die door TeamNEXT zijn geadviseerd uitgevoerd en effectief bevonden door de ouders/verzorgers van kinderen met complexe problematiek? Om dit te onderzoeken is er een literatuuronderzoek uitgevoerd en zijn er semigestructureerde interviews gehouden met twee ouders die zich bij TeamNext hebben aangemeld voor advies inzake hun kind/pleegkind. Uit het literatuuronderzoek kwam naar voren dat het NMT een aanvulling is op het ARC-model, omdat het model kennis over de hersenen koppelt aan trauma en het zich richt op een fysiek aspect van functioneren, waarbij bewegen gezien wordt als middel om traumaklachten te verbeteren (Perry, 2009). Er is echter weinig informatie over de effectiviteit van NMT in tegenstelling tot het ARC-model, welke door meerdere onderzoeken als effectief is gebleken. In vergelijking met het ARC bleek het trainen van professionals op het gebied van NMT ook langer te duren en meer geld te kosten (Caplis, 2014). Er zijn ook twee semigestructureerde interviews uitgevoerd waar de ervaren effectiviteit van ouders is bevraagd. Er bleek dat beide ouders allebei erg tevreden waren en het gehele adviestraject bij TeamNEXT een 8 gaven op een schaal van 1 tot 10. Beide ouders zagen dat de geadviseerde interventies meerdere positieve effecten hadden op hun kind. Wel zijn er een aantal verbeterpunten naar voren gekomen welke zijn geformuleerd als advies aan TeamNEXT. Zo lijkt het belangrijk dat er een follow up wordt gedaan. Ook zou het helpend zijn als TeamNEXT ook kan helpen bij het zoeken naar een therapeut die de geadviseerde interventies zou kunnen uitvoeren. Daarnaast is het advies om tijdens het traject ook de behoeften van de ouders in de gaten te houden en wellicht ook het kind (fysiek) te spreken om zo tot nog een beter beeld te komen. Er waren echter wel een aantal limitaties bij dit onderzoek. Zo waren er slechts twee participanten, mede door een korte wervingsperiode. Ook roept het literatuuronderzoek vragen op over het gebrek aan bestaand onderzoek naar de effectiviteit van het NMT. Dit zou in vervolgonderzoek nader onderzocht kunnen worden. Over het algemeen laat dit onderzoek een positief beeld zien waarbij de theorie achter het NMT een aanvulling lijkt te zijn en de ouders de adviezen die aan de hand van het NMT zijn gegeven als effectief hebben ervaren.Show less
At least one in seven children have experienced child abuse and/or neglect in the past year and more than two thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event by the age of sixteen....Show moreAt least one in seven children have experienced child abuse and/or neglect in the past year and more than two thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event by the age of sixteen. Psychological problems, gender, mood, and socioeconomic status (SES) are all related to the severity of childhood trauma. Childhood trauma has not only been associated with a lower SES, but also with lower scores on IQ-tests. For example, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect are all negatively correlated with IQ. The relationship between SES, IQ and childhood trauma is not well understood. Especially in a population with individuals that report overall higher levels of traumatic experiences and have a lower IQ, such as offspring of people with a mood disorder. In this study, we investigated the relationship between SES, IQ, and trauma in offspring of parents with a mood disorder. Children (N = 198 and N = 40) participating in the MARIO cohort study were assessed for gender, age, SES, and exposure to childhood trauma (emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect) using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Child IQ-scores were assessed with either the WISC or the WAIS. A linear regression analysis showed that IQ was only weakly related to childhood trauma. In contrast SES was strongly related to childhood trauma. These findings suggest that IQ is not a determinant of childhood trauma in current research but underscores the importance of SES. The significant association between SES and childhood trauma could be further investigated and implemented in clinical practice. Future interventions could for example focus on preventing and/or reducing childhood trauma in children who grow up with a low SES.Show less

The thesis explores the texts through the lens of trauma theory and postcolonial theory and considers the relation between trauma, colorism and passing. It finds that even though all three novels challenged the notions of colorism (at their time of publication) through the use of narrative stylistics, they all use different strategies to achieve this objective. To be more specific, while Passing and The Bluest Eye use a narrative style which is associated with Modernism and Postmodernism, The Vanishing Half adopts narrative devices which can be best explained with postcolonial theory.Show less

Om deze mensen toch een kans te...Show moreBinnen veel instellingen worden mensen met meerdere psychische stoornissen uitgesloten voor deelname aan behandeling wegens de complexiteit van hun problematiek. Om deze mensen toch een kans te bieden, wordt door GGZ Breburg een nieuw behandelprogramma opgezet. Het doel van dit onderzoek was het uitbrengen van een advies aan GGZ Breburg over werkzame en niet werkzame elementen in de huidige behandelingen van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen en gehechtheidstrauma. Er werden semigestructureerde diepte-interviews afgenomen bij vijf GGZ-therapeuten die ervaring hadden met de doelgroep. De interviews zijn getranscribeerd en gecodeerd met behulp van het programma Atlas.ti 22. Werkzame elementen waren volgens de therapeuten het maken van goed contact, de bereidheid van een cliënt om te werken aan zijn herstel (commitment ) en het opbouwen van vertrouwen. Volgens de therapeuten was een niet werkzaam element het geven van een te grote hoeveelheid psycho-educatie aan het begin van een behandeling. Een ander niet werkzaam element was als jongeren uit dezelfde behandelgroep op elkaar gingen steunen of als het vertrouwen beschadigd werd. Op basis hiervan werd aan GGZ Breburg geadviseerd extra aandacht te besteden aan het contact maken, commitment en het opbouwen van een vertrouwensrelatie. Daarnaast is geadviseerd om psycho-educatie in een beperkte mate aan te bieden aan het begin van een behandeling. Een beperking van het huidige onderzoek was de gelimiteerde steekproef. In vervolgonderzoek kan gekeken worden naar een onderzoek met een grotere steekproef dat zich richt op het doseren van psycho-educatie in de behandeling en het effect van MBT op cliënten die normaliter worden uitgesloten vanwege ASS-kenmerken.Show less

Never before had the U.S. been attacked so close to the heart of the nation. As the dust settled, a dominant narrative took hold of the country. This narrative cast America as a victim on the geopolitical stage, and through this narrative America’s leadership committed itself to overcoming its victimhood and becoming the hero by waging a war on terror. One of the earliest symbols used in this narrative was the FDNY - these brave firemen, who had rushed into danger to help civilians as the tower collapsed, came to symbolize both the national trauma and the heroism of the U.S. Many works have been written which analyze this narrative from many different angles, with the main takeaway being that this narrative succeeded in mobilizing the population of the U.S. towards war. Due to this heavy focus on this dominant narrative and the road it paved to war, some elements have not received their due attention in academic literature. This thesis will focus on two of these elements. This thesis focuses not on the impact of this dominant narrative on geopolitics, but on the impact of these narratives on its protagonists: the “heroes” of the FDNY. This thesis traces the changes in narratives surrounding these firemen with particular attention to the presentation of masculinity and trauma in these narratives. To discuss these narratives, this paper focuses on three publications: the documentary 9/11 by the Naudet brothers, the book American Ground by William Langewiesche, and the FX TV show Rescue Me. In these cultural objects, the masculinity of the FDNY firemen is presented very similarly, but the authors situate that masculinity completely differently in a gendered power order. However, inconsistent results are found regarding the aftermath of trauma. In the current study, it was expected that Syrian refugee children with higher severity of trauma symptoms scored significantly higher on cognitive flexibility and empathy tests than children with lower severity of trauma symptoms. To investigate these hypotheses, a quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted with a between-subjects design. The participants were asked to complete three questionnaires and two computer tasks to measure their cognitive flexibility, empathy, and trauma symptoms. Linear regression analyses showed that trauma was not a significant predictor of cognitive flexibility or empathy. If future studies could find this relationship in a larger sample, it possibly has implications for actively using cognitive flexibility and empathy as resilience factors during education for mental health professionals, therapeutic treatments of trauma, and in educational settings.Show less

Identifying individuals at...Show moreDomestic violence is a highly prevalent form of violation of human rights. Victims often exhibit trauma symptoms and/or suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Identifying individuals at risk for PTSD can sometimes be difficult, yet it is the key in ensuring prevention of later treatment. The solution might be recognition of early trauma-specific symptoms that are predictors of PTSD and can be detectable through spontaneous narratives. Under extreme stressors individuals experience even more distress, which can amplify pre existing trauma symptoms. This study investigated the linguistic characteristics of trauma specific symptoms over two periods – before Covid-19 and during Covid-19 in a domestic violence (DV) victims’ group and a control group. The sample consisted of a total 4413 Subreddit posts that were analyzed using the software Language Inquiry and Word Count. The following categories were investigated: word count, cognitive processes, 1st person singular pronoun, positive emotions, and death. A MANOVA analysis showed that the linguistic markers of trauma were stronger in the victims group compared to control. Victims had longer narratives that included more 1st person singular pronouns, and fewer cognition words and fewer positive emotion words. However, the markers did not differ over the two time periods. The results indicate that victims exhibit stronger trauma-specific discourse compared to control. Unlike self-reports, linguistic analysis of natural word use is free from response bias, a problem often encountered by clinicians. Analysis of linguistic characteristics of spontaneously written material can contribute to early detection of trauma symptoms and prevention of PTSD.Show less
Humanity’s excessive consumptive behaviour is the primary cause of ecological destruction. Yet, neither lowering consumption nor production levels seem to be addressed in environmental policies and...Show moreHumanity’s excessive consumptive behaviour is the primary cause of ecological destruction. Yet, neither lowering consumption nor production levels seem to be addressed in environmental policies and thus remain notably high. Therefore, this dissertation investigates the psychological roots of humanity’s ecologically destructive consumptive behaviour. My hypothesis is that ecological alienation and self-alienation are the main, compounding factors of ecologically destructive consumptive behaviour. Ecological alienation leads to devaluation of nature. As environmental values are paramount to sustainability-driven behaviour, devaluation of nature decreases the prevalence of such behaviour. Additionally, I argue that humanity’s excessive consumption is driven by consumptive addiction whereby individuals substitute their authentic physical, mental and emotional needs with consumption; and that this consumptive addiction is rooted in self-alienation. I suggest that ecological alienation and self-alienation are themselves rooted in the modern industrial worldview and its related value systems, and that these factors influence and reinforce each other. Ultimately, what is necessary to counter ecologically destructive addictive consumptive behaviour might be exactly what runs the risk of being indefinitely destroyed because of it: humanity’s reconnection with nature.Show less
