Doel: Huidige studie onderzoekt kenmerken van ASS in relatie tot agressief gedrag. Methoden: Ouders van 45 Nederlandse kinderen in de leeftijd van 3 tot 6.3 jaar vulden een tweetal vragenlijsten in over hun kind. De steekproef bevatte 16% meisjes en 84% jongens. Kenmerken van ASS werden gemeten met de Social Responsiveness Scale. Agressief gedrag werd gemeten met de Child Behavior Checklist. Resultaten: Hoewel sociaal bewustzijn, sociale cognitie, sociale motivatie, sociale communicatie en autistische preoccupaties allen sterk positief samenhingen met agressief gedrag, bleek in huidig onderzoek sociale communicatie de enige significante voorspeller van agressief gedrag (R2=.38). Conclusie/discussie: Huidig onderzoek biedt een breed scala aan aanknopingspunten, dat kan leiden tot sterke toename in wetenschappelijke kennis en belangrijke bijdrage kan leveren aan praktijk en mogelijk wijze waarop interventie voor agressief gedrag in de toekomst wordt toegepast.Show less

While the hazards...Show moreThis thesis will discuss the differences between professional and non-professional Dutch and English texts informing the readers of the dangers of sugar and tobacco consumption. While the hazards of smoking are widely known, the anti-sugar lobby is a fairly recent phenomenon. The thesis demonstrates how this has affected the articles written about either subject. The analyses in the first chapter reveal several differences between professional and non-professional texts as well as Dutch and English texts, especially where the use deixis and modal verbs are concerned. It pays special attention to the various persuasion strategies used by the authors, which are not only influenced by the manner in which the author is involved in the issue, but also by the audience’s culture. The second chapter indentifies and attempts to solve the various translation problems which occur on pragmatic, cultural, linguistic and text-specific levels when translating articles into the Target Language. Chapter three contains a critical analysis of the translation tool used to identify the articles’ text type: the Text Type Triangle by Dr. Chesterman, which is based on the nowadays outdated text typology developed by Katharina Reiss. Reiss’s text typology, and in extension the Triangle, was developed long before the Internet, which has a profound effect on the manner in which people communicate, became available to the average person. This chapter introduces an updated version of the Triangle, which does take the Internet as a means of communication into account. Finally the conclusion will summarise the questions answered and the data presented in the thesis and will also ask several questions which were raised by the analyses, but which could not be answered.Show less

Hij zou in het collectieve...Show moreEnkele jaren nadat Albert Einstein (1879-1955) zijn Speciale en Algemene Relativiteitstheorieën publiceerde, werd hij wereldwijd beschouwd als een grote beroemdheid. Hij zou in het collectieve bewustzijn een enorm aanzien verkrijgen – een aanzien dat hij op dit moment, zo’n 100 jaar later, nog steeds niet verloren is. In 1919 werd Einstein uitgeroepen tot de nieuwe Newton, en bovendien werd hij in die jaren gezien als een soort icoon voor iedere poëet, architect, filosoof, kunstenaar of schrijver.1 Belangrijke begrippen waar hij in zijn theorieën steeds vragen over stelde waren tijd en ruimte, en deze begrippen waren in het begin van de twintigste eeuw eveneens in verschillende kunstuitingen aan verandering onderhevig.2 De relatie van de Speciale en Algemene Relativiteitstheorie van Einstein en de Kubistische schilderkunst wordt in de kunsthistorische literatuur vaak gelegd (bijvoorbeeld bij het beschrijven van de totstandkoming van de Demoiselles d’Avignon van Picasso).3 De invloed van Einsteins werk op abstract werkende, Russische kunstenaars wordt in deze literatuur echter minder vaak behandeld. Voor dit onderzoek wil ik me daarom voornamelijk richten op representanten uit deze groep kunstenaars, vertegenwoordigd door bijvoorbeeld Kazimir Malevich, El Lissitzky, en met een bijzondere aandacht voor Wassily Kandinsky. Ik zal proberen te achterhalen op welke manier begrippen en concepten uit de Speciale of Algemene Relativiteitstheorie te verbinden zijn met het oeuvre van deze groep kunstenaars, en op welke manier zij eventueel elementen uit Einsteins theorieën hebben proberen om te zetten in kunstwerken en –uitingen.Show less

Three...Show moreIn this thesis there is researched to what extent the period defined as Breda’s Golden Era (the first half of the 16th century) is visible in the development of cesspits and import ceramics. Three research questions form the focus point of this thesis. First there is investigated to what extent the demographic development of Breda coincides with the economic development of the city. Second there is researched to what extent the economic and demographic development of Breda is reflected in the development of cesspits. And last there is investigated to what extent the economic and demographic development of Breda are reflected in the development of import ceramics. The economic development seems to coincide with the demographic development. Four phases are distinguished based on these developments in order to set a base to which the archaeological data will be compared. Phase 1 (1100-1404) includes the start and steady growth of Breda. Phase 2 (1404-1504) includes a stronger economic growth of the city. Phase 3 (1504-1566) marks the period referred to as the Golden Era of the city and phase 4 (1566-1648) marks the decline of Breda. The first working hypothesis, the recognition of Breda’s Golden Era in the development in number of cesspits, is more or less confirmed as the development in number of cesspits coincides for a large part with the development in density of population. The density of population regarding the number of civilians seems to coincide better with the development of cesspits than the density of population including both civilians and militaries, which resided in the city during the Eighty Year’s War (1568-1648). The second working hypothesis, the recognition of Breda’s Golden Era in the development in import ceramics, is also confirmed as the peak in total number of import ceramics coincides with Breda’s Golden Era and the low in total number of import ceramics with the decline of the city during the Eighty Year’s War (1568-1648).Show less

Daarbij wordt in het bijzonder aandacht besteed aan hoe Mitteleuropa verband hield tot Duits imperialisme vóór en tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Previous research on Greek sculptural art has mainly focussed on the objects as a...Show moreThis thesis explores the biography of the Dying Niobid, a fifth century BC Greek statue that was found in Rome. Previous research on Greek sculptural art has mainly focussed on the objects as a representation of the Classical Greek period. When looking at the Dying Niobid it becomes clear that this sculpture, one among a great body of Greek sculptures brought to Rome, has functioned in more than one context throughout its life, the ‘Greek’ context being just one of them. Therefore the question to be asked must no longer be what does the object represent, but what does it do in these different contexts? With the object as point of departure, this research will focus on the “active” role of the Dying Niobid in terms of power, influence and agency. To enable this, the main objective for this thesis is to apply a fundamentally different approach and methodology to Greek sculptures in Rome; a “cultural biographical approach” to objects. Through the methodology of the cultural biography, it is possible to take all of the contexts in which the object has functioned in consideration and reconstruct the way in which the agency and power of the object can change and accumulate throughout its existence. Exploring the biography of the Niobid leads us through different functions and appropriations of Greek art. From a fifth century BC Apollo temple in Greece, the story of the Niobid leads to Rome; the Temple of Apollo Sosianus, a Republican temple restored in Augustan times and further on to the Horti Sallustiani, a garden. In the realms of this garden the Niobid was excavated in 1906, followed by a series of events and political dispute concerning the statue. At the present the Dying Niobid still functions in Rome, on display in the Museo Nazionale Romano; Palazzo Massimo. This case-study is placed in a theoretical framework of symmetrical archaeology. Through this framework the aim is to achieve symmetry between not only the importance of the role of things, humans and other entities within each context, but also between the different life phases of the object. This will enable us to say something on the changes of meaning and agency of the object throughout time and space, and add to the wider debate on the role of Greek objects in the Roman world.Show less

Paratext is a concept coined by French...Show moreThis thesis examines all Dutch editions of Louis Couperus’ De stille kracht to discern trends or developments in the paratextual elements of these editions. Paratext is a concept coined by French literary theorist Gérard Genette. Instead of focussing only on the Genettian textual paratexts this thesis also examines the influence of (cover) illustrations as paratextual elements. De stille kracht was published in 1900, and as this thesis was written in 2015, it thus examines 115 years of De stille kracht publication history. Every chapter covers a few decades, thus presenting the reader with a historical narrative of the novel’s developments through time. The thesis therefore is a ‘biography’ of a book. The most important developments are the canonisation of De stille kracht, especially through the implementation of fore- and afterwords in later editions. The later editions also became part of ‘classic book series’, indicating canonisation of this literary work. A constant trend is the focus of the paratextual elements on the atmosphere and themes of the novel, instead of on the plot. In the end this thesis argues for the importance of Genette’s paratext for book historic and literary research and has shown how widely different one particular text can be presented to a reader.Show less

In fact they remain exceptional as Halaf Fine...Show moreStylized depictions of animals with imposing horns, birds and various other animal species are often seen as characteristic for Halaf painted pottery. In fact they remain exceptional as Halaf Fine Ware is generally dominated by geometric motifs. There is more about these figurative motifs than meets the eye. Apart from species identification, how can we interpret this figurative art? This study investigates the animal symbolism as painted on Halaf Fine Ware ceramic containers from Tell Sabi Abyad, located in the Balikh region of northern Syria. In order to interpret these animal motifs, the study contextualizes the motifs against the zoo-archaeological record, the depositional context, and the context of use. It appears that animals used in art were special, showing an inverse relationship with the faunal record. These animals probably represented seasonality and danger, and they may have been related to taboos and apotropaic magic. Moreover, some animals might have functioned within complex narratives, which were brought to life as the vessels upon which they were painted were discussed during Halaf commensality practices.Show less
