Om deze vraag te beantwoorden heb ik gekeken naar het staatsvormendebat (Hdt. 3.80-84) waarin Perzische edellieden debatteren over wat de beste staatsvorm is: democratie, oligarchie of monarchie. Vervolgens kijk ik in hoeverre deze argumenten worden bevestigd dan wel weerlegd door de gebeurtenissen in de rest van de Historiën, met name de uitweidingen over Athene en Sparta. Hieruit kunnen we concluderen dat Herodotus weliswaar niets ziet in de monarchie (tirannie), maar ook erg sceptisch is over de democratie, omdat deze staatsvorm zeer veel kwalijke kenmerken deelt met de tirannie. Het volk gedraagt zich immers ook vaak als een soort tiran, zoals we zien in Herodotus' beschrijving van de Atheense geschiedenis, waarin de volksvergadering keer op keer slechte (vaak door geldzucht) ingegeven beslissingen neemt, zonder dat het hierover rekenschap hoeft af te leggen. Uiteindelijk doet de precieze staatsvorm er minder toe, meent Herodotus, dan het feit dat er een ordenend principe is, een nomos, zoals Sparta die kent, die de driften van de mensen en de machthebbers intoomt.Show less

This...Show moreMath performance in The Netherlands is falling behind in comparison to other countries. It is therefore important to gain insight in influencing factors of math performance of boys and girls. This thesis examined the relation between teachers’ math anxiety and math performance of boys and girls as well as potential mediating factors, such as stereotypes and math competency beliefs. The Math Attitude Scale (MAS; Betz, 1978) was completed by 43 teachers (31 women (72%), average age: M = 40.77, SD = 12.71), from 22 regular primary schools in west and central Netherlands, Twente and Zeeland. A modified version of the Student Attitude Questionnaire’ (SAQ, Wigfield & Meece, 1988) is completed by 279 students (156 girls (56%), average age, M = 11.22, SD = 12.71) of group 6, 7 and 8. Results showed that both boys and girls have the same level of stereotypes (p = .09). Boys on the other hand had a higher level of competency beliefs (p < .001, d = .58). Likewise the math performance of boys was also higher (p = .02, d = .28). There was no mediation path for both boys and girls between teachers’ math anxiety, stereotypes of students and math performance of students (p = .29). Competency beliefs seemed to be a predictor rather than a mediator of math performance for students (p < .001, ɳ2 = .44). To improve math performance, parents and teachers can express positive expectations of math performance to increase the students’ math competency beliefs.Show less

Deze termen...Show moreIn het laatste decennium van de negentiende eeuw doet zich een verschijnsel voor dat ook al in de tijd zelf wordt omschreven met woorden als mystiek, nieuwe mystiek of mysticisme. Deze termen duiken steeds vaker op en worden in verband gebracht met geheimzinnigheid, duisterheid en occultisme, maar ook met het streven naar ‘het hogere’ of een hoger leven in de meest brede zin van het woord, al heeft het vaak weinig met het traditionele geloof te maken. Deze nieuwe mystiek vermengt zich bij sommigen ook met idealistische opvattingen, zoals het in die tijd opkomende socialisme, marxisme en anarchisme. In mijn scriptie staat de vraag wat het verband is tussen de nieuwe mystiek en het socialisme in het laatste decennium van de negentiende eeuw. Ik zal mij daarbij beperken tot Nederland. Om deze vraag te beantwoorden zal ik eerst ingaan op wat men onder ‘nieuwe mystiek’ dient te verstaan. Vervolgens zal ik kort een beeld schetsen van het socialisme ten tijde van het fin de siècle en nagaan op welke wijze socialisme en mystiek samenkomen in het werk van socialistisch georiënteerde schrijvers en kunstenaars. Tot slot zal ik onderzoeken in hoeverre de polemiek over mystiek en socialisme in het sociaal-culturele en literaire tijdschrift De Kroniek in 1896 de relatie tussen mystiek en socialisme in het fin de siècle verder kan verhelderen.Show less

In addition, personal characteristics like aggressive...Show moreThe experience of being socially accepted or rejected can elicit different changes in heart rate reactivity of both children and adults. In addition, personal characteristics like aggressive behavior may influence this reaction. This study examined whether heart rate reactivity of four-to-seven-year-old children differed during the processing of positive, negative and neutral social judgments, and whether aggression levels were related to heart rate reactivity during the processing of social judgments. Heart rate and behavioral data of 29 children was collected during an adjusted version of the Social Judgment Task. Results showed significant differences in the behavioral responses to negative and neutral judgments, compared to the responses to positive judgments. No significant differences were found in heart rate reactivity during the three conditions. These results indicate that children do distinguish between the three conditions, but their heart rate reactivity might not be influenced by the content of the feedback yet. Additionally aggression seems to be related to heart rate reactivity during the positive and negative condition. These findings suggest that heart rate reactivity in response to social judgments might develop throughout childhood, while aggression levels already influence heart rate reactivity in young children.Show less

Het oplichten van digitale tekst kan mogelijk bijdragen aan de technische...Show moreIn dit onderzoek stond het effect van het oplichten van digitale tekst voor kinderen in groep drie centraal. Het oplichten van digitale tekst kan mogelijk bijdragen aan de technische leesvaardigheid van beginnende lezers. In totaal deden 54 vloeiend Nederlands sprekende kinderen uit groep drie mee aan het onderzoek. De onderzoeksgroep bestond uit 28 jongens en 26 meisjes. De kinderen waren tussen de 6.2 en 8.3 jaar oud (M = 7.0, SD = 0.43) en hadden voor zover bekend geen leer- en/of gedragsproblemen. De kinderen waren afkomstig van reguliere basisscholen in Nederland. Het design van het onderzoek bestond uit een pretest posttest within subjects design. De interventie bestond uit het lezen en beluisteren van drie gedigitaliseerde verhalen uit Oom Olifant (Lobel, 1999). Deze verhalen werden in drie condities aangeboden: tekst licht niet op, een halve pagina tekst per keer licht op, één regel tekst per keer licht op. Om de onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden, werd gebruik gemaakt een gepaarde t-toets en een two-way mixed ANOVA. De resultaten van dit onderzoek gaven aan dat het oplichten van digitale tekst niet bijdraagt aan de leesontwikkeling van kinderen. Daarnaast gaven de resultaten van dit onderzoek aan dat het oplichten van één regel tekst per keer de technische leesvaardigheden van beginnende lezers in groep drie niet meer bevordert dan het oplichten van een halve pagina per keer. Daarnaast profiteerden zwakke lezers niet meer dan sterke lezers van het oplichten van digitale tekst. Concluderend leidt het oplichten van tekst niet tot een grotere bevordering van de technische leesvaardigheden van beginnende lezers in groep drie dan wanneer er geen tekst wordt opgelicht. Wel profiteren zwakke lezers meer van het lezen van digitale boeken in het algemeen dan niet zwakke lezers. Het is daarom van belang dat zwakke lezers zowel thuis als op school worden ondersteund in hun leesontwikkeling door digitale boeken aan te bieden.Show less

Based on fieldwork with the Palestine Community Music Project in the West Bank, it concludes that the musical activities of Palestine Community Music are meaningful in contrast to the participants’ lived experience of the Israeli occupation as a source of relief and an aid in the construction of hope. By choosing a field that does not fit the war-peace framework usually maintained in music and conflict studies, and by exploring the mechanisms behind the constitution of meaning and significance of the musical activities, this thesis ventures towards a more complete understanding of the construction of socio-political significance in music. In addition to the main conclusion of this thesis therefore, light is shed on the dependency of social relevance in music on sensitive dimensions of daily life, as well as on the experience-structuring embracing capacity of musical practices.Show less

This is done in three...Show moreThis project investigates in what ways or senses bioart can potentially bridge the gap between theories about human nature and human dignity, and actual human enhancement. This is done in three parts. As I move from a discussion of the current biotechnological debate that finds itself at a stalemate, to a more general view on (bio)art and its potential transformative force, I eventually turn to case studies of bioart practice to see whether art can perhaps contribute to an embodied living of biotechnology in our society. Can art contribute valuable insights to the concept of human nature and our biotechnological future, which the theoretical debate cannot, and if so, how? In the final part, part 4, I suggest that bioart’s critical potential is best considered in terms of affecting the academic debate and discourse. In this sense, it can potentially play a role in the tug-of-war that is the biotechnological debate. It functions significantly better in an academic context than it does for The General Public. I conclude that there are three crucial aspects to the potential transformative force of bioart: ambiguity, embodiment and crossing of boundaries. The fourth, demystification, is shown to be not quite successful in practice. This research shows that ambiguity is the most important aspect to the specificity of bioart. It leads me to consider what I call The Complicity Paradox to be the most influential in terms of bioart potentially shifting the biotechnological debate and enacting a transformative force within discussions on biotechnology and its far-reaching consequences. Bioart does this across the different fields of art, science and the humanities. Bioart can simultaneously be complicit in, as well as contest and be critical of biotechnology and its forces by becoming part of the fields that are biotechnology and science itself, potentially changing them from within.Show less

These heritage sites have their own...Show moreThis thesis considers the three Albanian World Heritage sites of Butrint, Berat and Gjirokastra in the light of heritage tourism and sustainable development. These heritage sites have their own unique characteristics with much potential for further tourism development and the development of community awareness of their heritage. To safeguard sustainability of this heritage for future generations, the implementation of sustainable and effective management plans to protect the significance of these sites and to mitigate tourism impacts is necessary. In this study the concepts of sustainability and heritage tourism are first explained in the way they are used for the analysis. Subsequently, the World Heritage Sites (WHS) of Butrint, Berat and Gjirokastra are analyzed on the basis of a few sustainability principles to measure the degree of integration of these principles within current heritage management and tourism planning of these sites. The sustainability principles can be outlined as continuity, intergenerational equity, intragenerational equity, diversity, a precautionary principle and interdependence. The outcome of these principles for each heritage site is discussed on the basis of a qualitative content analysis of literature and management plans. Finally, a short comparison is made between the WHS to seek for aspects that can contribute to an improved management of other sites and to seek for aspects that require more attention or improvement.Show less

Onder andere wordt geconcludeerd dat niuews over de ziekte zelf minder belangrijk is dan nieuws over dreiging in Nederland, Europa en de VS voor het 'hypen' van het onderwerp. Ook is de stemming (angstaanjagend, neutraal of geruststellend) een doorslaggevende factor voor de vlucht die het nieuws neemt.Show less
