Show less

The second part is a description of the search for the author of the anonymous Latin chronicle 'Chronicon Hollandiae', which has some connection with the chronicles of Holland by Johannes a Leydis.Show less

A credit structure was set up that would link Dutch investors with their West Indian colonies, by providing plantation mortgages (called negotiaties) for those dreaming of becoming planters. Interest rates were high: attractive for investors, but all too cumbersome for the new plantation owners. Many planters, mostly producing coffee, could not repay their loans, leading to the demise of the system as many bankrupt planters returned home and investors lost their capital. That is the case in Suriname at least, because in the near-by colonies of Essequibo and Demerara the plantation economy had only just took-off and continued to expand. This thesis tries to explain that divergence, next to identifying the winners and losers in the system and testing several explanatory concepts in order to gain a better conceptual understanding of the negotiatie structure. Results are that winners and losers were different than previously thought: investors could still be winners, while the fund managers could easily be losers. Additionally, the negotiatie system should be termed a classic mania, that could persist only for a limited time because of the Ponzi aspects, visible in the need for continuous refinancing. Lastly, the plantation mortgage structure could be seen as a failed transition to modernity, one that tried to bridge the commercial and financial interest of the Dutch economy, but was too much rooted in mercantilist thought. This was less the case for Essequibo and Demerara, where an open, but partly illegal, connection with the rest of the Atlantic was more important than the obligatory relationship with the metropolis. Next to legal supplies, illegal trade occurred on a large scale and proved crucial for the development of the two colonies.Show less

With the increase of non-western immigrants since 2000, Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims have increased. Avoidance of contact and increased Muslim prejudice are mutually related problems. A solution is suggested by Allport (1954) who hypothesized that intergroup contact could effectively reduce intergroup prejudice when certain conditions are met. Contact between different groups is likely to occur on different contact-levels, such as the classroom, the neighborhood and on the individual-level in case of intergroup friendship. However, research studying contact in different settings is scarce. The goal of this study is to test in a multilevel model on which level intergroup contact is most negatively related to Muslim prejudice. In contrast with our hypothesis this study found that ethnic diversity in the neighborhood and in the classroom has no significant effect on Muslim prejudice. Furthermore, the number of Muslim classmates is not related to the number of Muslim friends. Consistent with our hypothesis, adolescents with more Islamic friends had less feelings of Muslim prejudice. We therefore advise to alter the Dutch policy on integration and shift the focus to the level of the individual. Interventions can for instance be started at the level of the family or at the level of the classroom using the ‘jigsaw’ method.Show less

With the use of Inglehart and Baker (2000) I will take on a certain perspective as I aim to investigate whether certain religious connotations are still present in contemporary commercial sand paintings which have developed originally from a traditional ceremonial context. I will use several academic articles to help state my argument. On hindsight it seems that there are indeed several indications which point out that certain religious connotations do still exist in contemporary commercial products like sand paintings, but also in tapestry weavings, ceramics and baskets. Hereby I can conclude that it is not possible to declare commercial sand paintings as secular entities.Show less

This is the first time that such an overview is made for Amerindian calabashes and gourds. Next to that it will also investigate the possible exchange between Amerindians and Maroons in relation to calabashes and bottle gourds, as it can be assumed that these two groups lived in much closer contact than previously thought. Furthermore, it will become clear that these fruits had a much more prominent role in the material culture of pre-Columbian societies. Not only did they serve as model for early pottery, but they were also used alongside their ceramic counterparts. For this research a wide range of sources is used, varying from literature research to museum collections of the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden and the Stichting Surinaams Museum in Paramaribo which is supplemented with fieldwork in Donderskamp, Konomerume, a Kari’na village along the Wayombo River.Show less

This dataset serves as a backdrop onto which problems of rock art analysis and rock art documentation are placed. For the rock art analysis, several approaches are considered. First, the semiotic approach is looked at, through the use of theories constructed by Panofsky, Saussure and Pierce. Then, a contrasting way of looking at rock art is described, that also considers the landscape that these images are placed in. Both approaches have their merits and their weaknesses in application to the Aguas Buenas dataset. In the second half, documentation methods and techniques for petroglyphs are subjected to critical evaluation with the purpose of creating a method, that is easy, cost efficient and still provides a high quality. Photography has proven to fulfill these requirements, and instructions are given as to provide a handhold for (starting) rock art researchers to take accurate photographs of petroglyphs. Lastly, the database is explained and provided, and a comparison is made with other petroglyph datasets.Show less

Show less
